APPLICATION QUESTIONS, TIPS AND GUIDANCE

GENERAL INFORMATION AND TIPS:

Be specific in your answers! Provide concrete examples and statistics and


demonstrate a clear connection between your vision and how to realize
your solution.

Each answer has a character limit. Keep your answers short, concise and
to the point.

Your answer must clearly show how you are using digital tools and
technology to improve the lives of children and society, or how you plan to
use digital technology to scale and grow.

Dont forget to explain the how in your application. Dont just tell us that
youre going to improve the lives of children - show us how youre going to
do it.

We will only accept applications submitted through our website. You may
not mail, fax, or email your application. Do not send supplemental materials
via email or postal mail. Any documentation sent to us will not be reviewed
in the evaluation and cannot be returned.

We will accept only one application per applicant per application period.
Any applicant who submits multiple applications for the same project or
single applications for multiple different projects will be disqualified from
consideration.

Partnerships (organizations led by two individuals) must submit a joint


application for their project. Partners who submit separate applications for
the same project will be disqualified from consideration.

Remember that the purpose of your application is to prove that you are the
exceptional individual with a great idea that can improve lives for many
children we are looking for. Prove that you are willing to work full-time on
making the idea grow and that you have the entrepreneurial drive to
succeed.

STEP 2: BUSINESS PLAN


Congratulations on making it through to the second stage!
The purpose of the business plan application is to now understand your
idea or initiative in more detail. Here is a reminder of our criteria and what
we are looking for:

The Tigo Digital Changemakers selection criteria


We are looking for early stage, social entrepreneurs with powerful ideas for
children that use digital solutions.
The idea we are looking for must:
- Be innovative, creative, and fresh a new solution to an existing problem or
a new way to implement an existing solution
- Be early-stage or ready to grow.
- Be something doable, clear and focused.
- Have potential for great social impact, being able to improve the lives of
children (up to 18 years).
- Have potential to be system changing. The vision shall reach beyond
changes in individual lives, towards long-term changes.
- Be scalable. The idea must have the potential for a sustainable scale up in
order to reach many children even after the support period.
- Have a sustainable financing plan. The idea must have the capability to
develop a sustainable business model and a long-term financing plan.
The idea must use digital solutions. The use of digital solutions can be
demonstrated in one or more of the following ways:
- Utilizing mobile, broadband, digital and/or information technology, as part of
the solution
- Have the potential to use mobile broadband, digital and/or information
technology to improve the quality of the impact or scale of the social impact
- Promote connectivity and access to communications, particularly to
underserved populations or has the potential of doing so.
- Note: The use of digital can be developed during the application process.
Keep an eye out for information regarding events where you can get support
on how to use digital.

By early stage, we mean individuals whose ideas have not yet reached their full
potential. This can be:
- Individuals with a brand new idea
- Individuals who have built an organization that is still not fully developed
because of the individual not having been able to focus fully on the
idea/organization
- Individuals who have built an organization that has run for some time, but
who need support to scale the organization, change the direction of the
operations or take on a new and bigger challenge
The person we are looking for, the social entrepreneur, must have:
- Entrepreneurial skill, such as being result-driven, goal oriented, pragmatic,
and flexible.
- Leadership skills; being able to inspire others and get other people involved.
- A strong passion for social change to transform the world for children and a
burning desire to make a difference
- The social entrepreneur must also be the leader of the organization
established to bring this idea into reality

ABOUT YOU THE SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR


1. Describe yourself, your current professional position and where you
see yourself in five years.
We want to get an understanding of who you are as a person, what drives you,
what you work with now and where you want to be in the future. Describe where
you see yourself in five years, what you will have achieved, and what you will be
doing.
2. If you received support through the Reach for Change incubator, what
learning and progress do you imagine that you will gain?
What do you think you would gain from the Reach for Change support? What are
you hoping to learn? What is it about our Incubator specifically that you are
interested in?
3. What support do you need to develop your innovation? In terms of
digital/tech support from Tigo and/or social strategy/network support
from Reach for Change?
If there are specific kinds of support that you would like or need from Tigo and /
or Reach for Change in order to develop your innovation in the Incubator, please
list them here.
4. Describe what motivates you to be a social entrepreneur and what
motivates you to work with the problem you want to solve.
You could spend your time doing anything. Why do you want to do this? Why do
you care about this problem, why is it important to you and why do you think you
should be the one to solve it?
5. Please confirm that you are, or will be (for organizations yet to be
created), the leader of the organization that will deliver the solution you
are proposing.
Reach for Change can only support the leaders of organizations, not employees
or workers under someone else's direction. This is because as a Change Leader
you will need to be the primary decision maker in your organization.

6. Have you already created the organization that will deliver the solution
you are applying with?
The winners of this competition must be the founder & leader of their own,
Tanzanian registered organization which will implement this solution.
If you have already founded the organization that will work explicitly with the idea
you are proposing, answer YES and then continue to answer the following 8
questions.
If you have not yet founded the organization, answer NO to this question and
then leave the next 8 questions blank and go straight to question 15
7. What is the name of the founder of the organization? If there was more
than 1 founder, list the names of all co-founders.

The turnover is the total income received by your organization in the last financial
year. This includes total income from donations, sales & other revenue streams.

current focus points of the work of your organization?
We want to understand what the main focus of your organizations work is, s
that we can see how your idea fits with that.

ABOUT THE BUSINESS: IN THE NEXT 6 QUESTIONS, DESCRIBE THE


ORGANIZATION YOU HOPE TO ESTABLISH OR GROW WITH OUR
SUPPORT.
15. List your goals for the organization for the next 5 years. What will you
achieve? What method will you use? How many people will benefit
directly in years 1, 3, and 5 specify how many children?
How will your work impact the world? What goals do you want your organization
to have achieved in five years from now? We also want to understand the
number of children you expect to work with in years 1, 3 and 5 so we can get a
good idea of the rate at which you plan to grow the impact of the project. These
dont need to be exact, but should indicate your best estimate at this stage.
16. How will you measure the results (qualitatively and quantitatively)?
What impact will your organization have and how will you measure that impact?
Have you already developed a way of measuring the impact of your activities?
We are not expecting you to have a fully developed structure yet, but we want to
know how you are thinking about this.
17. Describe your methods for conducting your work, and how you plan to
use digital technologies. What are you doing now? What will you need
to develop in the upcoming year and in the next 3 years?
How will you operationalize your idea? Will you have a specific program with
activities for your target group? What would that program or those activities be?
Will you develop a product that helps address the unmet need? Describe the
method you will use to meet the need and address the problem. If you are
already using digital technologies, how are you using them now and what will
you need to develop moving forward? If you are not currently using digital
technologies, explain how you plan to introduce digital technologies into your
initiative and how you expect them to improve the quality or scale of your
planned work.
18. Specify your target group.
Describe the target group that you want to reach. Who are they? Where are
they?

19. List your present and potential partners. Describe your current
relationship - are you are currently working with them, in contact with
them or just planning to contact them.
Who are or will you be working with? Will you be collaborating with other actors
other organizations, companies, government agencies etc? Do you already have
established relationships with these actors? Are these optional partners or will
you be dependent on them for the success of your work?
20. Describe your schedule and milestones for the up-coming year.
Describe your plan for the upcoming year, including the most important
milestones that you want to achieve this year. We want to see that your idea is
realistic and can be implemented.

ANALYSIS FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION
21. How will you reach the target group?
Describe how you think you will reach the target group. Based on who they are
and their specific situation, how do you best reach them? Describe the different
communication media you plan on using.
22. Describe the environment in which you will be operating? Why is it
important to solve the issue you are addressing?
What is the specific context of the problem? How is the problem connected to
and influenced by different aspects of the society around it? Who or what
structures have an effect on the problem and the situation you are operating in?
23. Who are your competitors: who is already solving the same problems
and how are they doing it?
Competitors means others working in the same area. There are always others
working in the same or similar areas. This is important to look at for market
strategy. For example, you will probably not be the only actor providing services
for your target group. It is possible that there is a wide range of other actors such
as local community organizations, government agencies, international actors and
others who work in your community. You will also probably not be the only

organization addressing this area of need. There might be other actors in your
own community and it is very likely that there are actors in other communities
addressing the same problem. We want to know more about these other actors
and how your idea is different from their ideas and activities. Please name
specific organizations working in your field.
24. What do you offer that nobody else does?
How are your idea and organization different and stronger than whats already
there? What makes your idea and your organization more likely to succeed than
the other actors in the same field? What do you think are the comparative
strengths of your organization?

YOUR ORGANIZATION
25. Please, describe your budget for the upcoming year. Provide details on
your expected revenues and expenses.
Think seriously about the costs involved in operationalizing your idea or
sustaining your current organization. Describing the budget includes both
defining all costs of the entire operation, including purchases, transportation etc,
and defining the expected revenues and incomes for the year. We want to
understand the current financial situation of your organization and how you see
your budget for the upcoming year.
26. Describe your strategy for long term financial sustainability? How will
your organization generate enough money to create a sustainable
financing model? What are the next steps?
We want to understand how you are thinking about financing in the long term.
You dont need to have a fully developed budget yet. We support early stage
social entrepreneurs who are at different points in their start-up phase so we
understand that different ideas / organizations will be at different points. Part of
the incubator program is to develop a business model so we are not necessarily
expecting you to have that yet, but we want to understand how you are thinking
about this based on where your organization currently is what your strategy is
for long-term funding, how you will raise enough income to continue to operate
and grow, what steps you need to take now, etc.

27. On which financial sources do you plan to rely during the next year?
What is your plan for financial sources for the year ahead? This could include
own funds, loans, donations, investments, earned income and others. Describe
the different sources you plan to rely on and which will be more significant etc. if
you can, state estimated percentages for the different sources, which helps
clarify the relative size and significance of the different sources.
28. Do you have any experience of selling a product or service, fundraising,
or generating income in other ways for a program or organization?
Here we want to learn more about the financial situation of your organization and
your own previous experiences. Do you have experience of fundraising or in
other ways of generating income for projects? If so, what have you done? Please
give some examples of clients, donors and/or customers and how you generated
income from them.
29. A Video About Your Pitch: Add a link to a video where you pitch your
idea.
Including a video pitch is optional, however we highly recommend that you
include one if you can. It demonstrates your ability to use technology and to take
on and meet a new challenge. It is also a chance to show us your personality so
we can meet the person behind the application. The video ptich should be a
short video in which you talk about your innovation for no longer than 60
seconds. Tell us the problem you see, the solution you have created, and why
you care about this. The film does not need to be filmed or edited with special
equipment; it can be recorded with a cell-phone or computer web-cam. When
you have made your video pitch, upload it to a website and provide the link to the
clip on that site here. Some sites you may like to use for uploading videos
include: www.youtube.com; www.vimeo.com; www.screen.yahoo.com
REFERENCES
Your references should be two people who know you in a professional way. They
can know you or have supervised you for example in a work, educational or
volunteering setting. We want to understand who you are, what experience you
have, and your track record of achievement.
Your references should be people who know you professionally. This means
they should not be family members, close friends, or significant others
(boyfriends, girlfriends, husband, wife etc).
