Questions for Muslims

Q1. Why are men allowed to admonish, banish from beds and beat (lightly) their wives if
their wives are not allowed to reciprocate?
Men are the protectors And maintainers of women, Because Allah has given The one more
(strength) Than the other, and because They support them From their means. Therefore the
righteous women Are devoutly obedient, and guard In (the husbands) absence What Allah
would have them guard. As to those women On whose part ye fear Disloyalty and ill-conduct,
Admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them; But if they return
to obedience, Seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, Great
(above you all).
Quran 4:34, Abdullah Yusuf Ali Translation
Muhammad b. Qais said (to the people): Should I not narrate to you (a hadith of the Holy
Prophet) on my authority and on the authority of my mother? We thought that he meant the
mother who had given him birth. He (Muhammad b. Qais) then reported that it was 'A'isha who
had narrated this: Should I not narrate to you about myself and about the Messenger of Allah
(may peace be upon him)? We said: Yes. She said: When it was my turn for Allah's Messenger
(may peace be upon him) to spend the night with me, he turned his side, put on his mantle and
took off his shoes and placed them near his feet, and spread the corner of his shawl on his bed
and then lay down till he thought that I had gone to sleep. He took hold of his mantle slowly and
put on the shoes slowly, and opened the door and went out and then closed it lightly. I covered
my head, put on my veil and tightened my waist wrapper, and then went out following his steps
till he reached Baqi'. He stood there and he stood for a long time. He then lifted his hands three
times, and then returned and I also returned. He hastened his steps and I also hastened my
steps. He ran and I too ran. He came (to the house) and I also came (to the house). I, however,
preceded him and I entered (the house), and as I lay down in the bed, he (the Holy Prophet)
entered the (house), and said: Why is it, O 'A'isha, that you are out of breath? I said: There is
nothing. He said: Tell me or the Subtle and the Aware would inform me. I said: Messenger of
Allah, may my father and mother be ransom for you, and then I told him (the whole story). He
said: Was it the darkness (of your shadow) that I saw in front of me? I said: Yes. He struck me
on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle
would deal unjustly with you? She said: Whatsoever the people conceal, Allah will know it. He
said: Gabriel came to me when you saw me. He called me and he concealed it from you. I
responded to his call, but I too concealed it from you (for he did not come to you), as you were
not fully dressed. I thought that you had gone to sleep, and I did not like to awaken you, fearing
that you may be frightened. He (Gabriel) said: Your Lord has commanded you to go to the
inhabitants of Baqi' (to those lying in the graves) and beg pardon for them. I said: Messenger of
Allah, how should I pray for them (How should I beg forgiveness for them)? He said: Say,
Peace be upon the inhabitants of this city (graveyard) from among the Believers and the
Muslims, and may Allah have mercy on those who have gone ahead of us, and those who
come later on, and we shall, God willing, join you. Sahih Muslim (Book #004, Hadith #2127)
Narrated 'Ikrima: Rifa'a divorced his wife whereupon 'AbdurRahman bin Az-Zubair Al-Qurazi
married her. 'Aisha said that the lady (came), wearing a green veil (and complained to her
(Aisha) of her husband and showed her a green spot on her skin caused by beating). It was the
habit of ladies to support each other, so when Allah's Apostle came, 'Aisha said, "I have not
seen any woman suffering as much as the believing women. Look! Her skin is greener than her
clothes!" When 'AbdurRahman heard that his wife had gone to the Prophet, he came with his
two sons from another wife. She said, "By Allah! I have done no wrong to him but he is
impotent and is as useless to me as this," holding and showing the fringe of her garment,

'Abdur-Rahman said, "By Allah, O Allah's Apostle! She has told a lie! I am very strong and can
satisfy her but she is disobedient and wants to go back to Rifa'a." Allah's Apostle said, to her, "If
that is your intention, then know that it is unlawful for you to remarry Rifa'a unless AbdurRahman has had sexual intercourse with you." Then the Prophet saw two boys with 'AbdurRahman and asked (him), "Are these your sons?" On that 'AbdurRahman said, "Yes." The
Prophet said, "You claim what you claim (i.e.. that he is impotent)? But by Allah, these boys
resemble him as a crow resembles a crow,
Sahih Bukhari (Book #72, Hadith #715)
Q2.1. Why is the witness of a woman equal to half of that of a man?
Q2.2. Since Muhammad (PBUH) has said that a woman lacks common sense, why
should one expect a child to listen to their mother?
[Muhammad (PBUH) said]: O womenfolk, you should give charity and ask much forgiveness for
I saw you in bulk amongst the dwellers of Hell. A wise lady among them said: Why is it,
Messenger of Allah, that our folk is in bulk in Hell? Upon this the Holy Prophet observed: You
curse too much and are ungrateful to your spouses. I have seen none lacking in common
sense and failing in religion but (at the same time) robbing the wisdom of the wise, besides
you. Upon this the woman remarked: What is wrong with our common sense and with religion?
He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Your lack of common sense (can be well judged from the fact)
that the evidence of two women is equal to one man, that is a proof of the lack of common
sense.
Sahih Muslim 1:142
The Prophet (the blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Isnt the witness of a woman
equal to half of that of a man?" The women said: "Yes." He said: "This is because of the
deficiency of her mind."
Sahih Bukhari 3:48:824
Q3. Are the wives in Paradise women who were from Earth? If so, then why would they
want to stand in corners? What if a woman dies unmarried?
Allah's Apostle said, "In Paradise there is a pavilion made of a single hollow pearl sixty miles
wide, in each corner of which there are wives who will not see those in the other corners; and
the believers will visit and enjoy them. And there are two gardens, the utensils and contents of
which are made of silver; and two other gardens, the utensils and contents of which are made
of so-and-so (i.e. gold) and nothing will prevent the people staying in the Garden of Eden from
seeing their Lord except the curtain of Majesty over His Face."Sahih Bukhari Book 60 Hadith 402.
Q4. How could Muhammads (PBUH) companions have sex with their slave-girls and
avoid pregnancy. Surely if the women got pregnant, the child would be illegitimate.
Q5. Muhammad (PBUH) died by illness that may have been linked to the poison given to
him at Khaibar years before. Does this not give evidence of his false prophet hood?
And if Muhammad had made up about Us some [false] sayings, we would have seized him by
the right hand; then we would have cut from him the aorta. And there is no one of you who
could prevent [Us] from him.
Quran 69:44-47
The prophet in his ailment in which he died, used to say O Aisha! I still feel the pain caused by
the food I ate at Khaibar, and at this time, I feel as if my aorta is being cut from that poison.
Sahih Bukhari 59:713

Q6. If Muhammad (PBUH) was sinless, how come he committed Shirk when he revealed
the Satanic verses?
Have you thought of al-Lat and al-Uzza and Manat, the third ... these are the exalted Gharaniq
(a high flying bird) whose intercession is approved.
(Ibn Ishaq, Sirat Rasul Allah, pp. 165-166)
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for
whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous
sin .Quran 4:48
Q7. How could Muhammad (PBUH) say that his uncle Abu Talib is in hellfire, where
nobody is in hellfire until the day of judgement?
That he said to the Prophet "You have not been of any avail to your uncle [Abu Talib] [though]
by Allah, he used to protect you and used to become angry on your behalf." The Prophet said,
"He is in a shallow fire, and had it not been for me, he would have been in the bottom of the
[Hell] Fire."
Sahih Bukhari Book 58 Hadith 222
Q8. If all that Muhammad (PBUH) knows is from Allahs revelations, clearly indicated by
Revelations that give information to Muhammad (PBUH) abrogating a previous verse or
changing his decision e.g. incident re. Muhammad (PBUH) and his slave girl Mary with
his wives, then how could he tell stories in the hadith e.g. prostitute and dog without
this being a revelation?
Q9. Quran 33:53; is this a verse from Allah?
O you who believe! Enter not the Prophet's houses, unless permission is given to you for a
meal, (and then) not (so early as) to wait for its preparation. But when you are invited, enter,
and when you have taken your meal, disperse without sitting for a talk. Verily, such (behaviour)
annoys the Prophet, and he is shy of (asking) you (to go); but Allah is not shy of (telling you)
the truth. And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen:
that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not (right) for you that you should
annoy Allah's Messenger, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him (his death). Verily,
with Allah that shall be an enormity.
Quran 33:53
Q10. Why is the Quran not ordered chronologically?
Q11. How come Muhammad (PBUH) was allowed to have more than four wives? He had
nine at the same time.
Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet used to visit all his wives in one night and he
had nine wives at that time. Sahih Bukhari (Book #5, Hadith #282)
Q12. Why did Muhammad (PBUH)s scribe Abdullah Ibn Sad Ibn Abi Sarh leave Islam?
Why was he not killed if the punishment for apostasy is death? NOT PROVABLE!
Muhammad had scribes write his revelations down for him. One scribe was `Abdullah Ibn Sa'd
Ibn Abi Sarh. As Sarh wrote these revelations down, he frequently made suggestions on
improving their wording. Muhammad often agreed and allowed the changes to be made.
Eventually, Sarh left Islam, knowing it could not be from God if a mere scribe were allowed to
change God's word. Later, after the conquest of Mecca, Muhammad ordered Sarh's death.
Abstract sources.

The apostle had instructed his commanders when they entered Mecca only to fight those who
resisted them except a small number who were to be killed even if they were found beneath the
curtains of the Ka`ba. Among them was `Abdullah b. Sa`d, brother of the B. `Amir b. Lu'ayy.
The reason he ordered him to be killed was that he had been a Muslim and used to write down
revelation; then he apostatized and returned to Qurahysh [Mecca] and fled to `Uthman b. `Affan
whose foster brother he was. [`Uthman was one of Muhammad's closest friends, and later
became the Caliph of Islam]. The latter hid him until he brought him to the apostle after the
situation in Mecca was tranquil, and asked that he might be granted immunity. They allege that
the apostle remained silent for a long time till finally he said yes, [granting `Abdullah immunity
from the execution order]. When `Uthman had left he [Muhammad] said to his companions who
were sitting around him, "I kept silent so that one of you might get up and strike off his head!"
One of the Ansar [Muhammad's helpers from Medina] said, then why didn't you give me a sign,
O apostle of God?" He [Muhammad] answered that a prophet does not kill by pointing.
Sitat RasulAllah NOTE: the Sirat Rasul Allah is the earliest and most authentic biography of
Muhammad. It was even written before the Hadith were compiled.
Q13. Muhammad (PBUH) ordered the breastfeeding of an adult (albeit for good reason).
Logic would not convey that this would work.
A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Sahla bint Suhail came to Allah's Apostle (may
peace be upon him) and said: Messengerof Allah, I see on the face of Abu Hudhaifa (signs of
disgust) on entering of Salim (who is an ally) into (our house), whereupon Allah's Apostle (may
peace be upon him) said: suckle him. She said: How can I suckle him as he is a grown-up
man? Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) smiled and said: I already know that he is a
young man 'Amr has made this addition in his narration that he participated in the Battle of
Badr and in the narration of Ibn 'Umar (the words are): Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) laughed.
Sahih Muslim (Book #008, Hadith #3424)
Q13. The third answer in Muhammad (PBUH)s test of prophet hood is not scientifically
correct? If the answer is from Gabriel, and it is wrong, then surely the Quran is wrong?
Narrated Anas: When 'Abdullah bin Salam heard the arrival of the Prophet at Medina, he came
to him and said, "I am going to ask you about three things which nobody knows except a
prophet: What is the first portent of the Hour? What will be the first meal taken by the people of
Paradise? Why does a child resemble its father, and why does it resemble its maternal uncle"
Allah's Apostle said, "Gabriel has just now told me of their answers." 'Abdullah said, "He (i.e.
Gabriel), from amongst all the angels, is the enemy of the Jews." Allah's Apostle said,
"The first portent of the Hour will be a fire that will bring together the people from the east to the
west; the first meal of the people of Paradise will be Extra-lobe (caudate lobe) of fish-liver. As
for the resemblance of the child to its parents: If a man has sexual intercourse with his wife and
gets discharge first, the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets discharge first, the
child will resemble her." On that 'Abdullah bin Salam said, "I testify that you are the Apostle of
Allah." 'Abdullah bin Salam further said, "O Allah's Apostle! The Jews are liars, and if they
should come to know about my conversion to Islam before you ask them (about me), they
would tell a lie about me." The Jews came to Allah's Apostle and 'Abdullah went inside the
house. Allah's Apostle asked (the Jews), "What kind of man is 'Abdullah bin Salam amongst
you?" They replied, "He is the most learned person amongst us, and the best amongst us, and
the son of the best amongst us." Allah's Apostle said, "What do you think if he embraces Islam
(will you do as he does)?" The Jews said, "May Allah save him from it." Then 'Abdullah bin
Salam came out in front of them saying, "I testify that None has the right to be worshipped but

Allah and that Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah." Thereupon they said, "He is the evilest
among us, and the son of the evilest amongst us," and continued talking badly of him.
Sahih Bukhari (Book #55, Hadith #546)
Q14. Why was temporary marriage permitted for a year?
Q15. In the following hadith, at what point does someone qualify for such a killing? Does
this only refer to non muslims since killing a fellow muslim is a sin punishable by death
itself?
Ali said: Whenever I narrate to you anything from the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon
him) believe it to be absolutely true as falling from the sky is dearer to me than that of
attributing anything to him (the Holy Prophet) which he never said. When I talk to you of
anything that is between me and you (there might creep some error in it) for battle is an
outwitting. I heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) as saying: There would
arise at the end of the age a people who would be young in age and immature in thought, but
they would talk (in such a manner) as if their words are the best among the creatures. They
would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throats, and they would pass through
the religion as an arrow goes through the prey. So when you meet them, kill them, for in
their killing you would get a reward with Allah on the Day of Judgment.
Sahih Muslim (Book #005, Hadith #2328)
Q16. The following verse concerns the rising of the sun from the place where it sets
during the end times. This could not be scientifically correct and also hints to the Earth
being flat.
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon
him) one day said: Do you know where the sun goes? They replied: Allah and His Apostle know
best. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Verily it (the sun) glides till it reaches its resting place
under the Throne. Then it falls prostrate and remains there until it is asked: Rise up and go to
the place whence you came, and it goes back and continues emerging out from its rising place
and then glides till it reaches its place of rest under the Throne and falls prostrate and remains
in that state until it is asked: Rise up and return to the place whence you came, and it returns
and emerges out from it rising place and the it glides (in such a normal way) that the people do
not discern anything (unusual in it) till it reaches its resting place under the Throne. Then it
would be said to it: Rise up and emerge out from the place of your setting, and it will rise from
the place of its setting. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said. Do you know
when it would happen? It would happen at the time when faith will not benefit one who has not
previously believed or has derived no good from the faith.
Sahih Muslim (Book #001, Hadith #0297)

and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance.
Quran Chapter #15, Verse #19)

Allah has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearings, (i.e. they are closed from accepting
Allah's Guidance), and on their eyes there is a covering. Theirs will be a great torment.
Quran 2:7
Allah mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong-doings to wander blindly.
Quran 2:15
And let not the disbelievers think that Our postponing of their punishment is good for them. We
postpone the punishment only so that they may increase in sinfulness. And for them is a
disgracing torment.

Quran 3:178
Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his ilah (god)? And Allah knowing

into the earth and he will go on sinking into it til the day of resurrection

Q27. How does the hell-fire have feelings?

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "In very hot weather delay the Zuhr prayer till it
becomes (a bit) cooler because the severity of heat is from the raging of Hell-fire. The Hell-fire
of Hell complained to its Lord saying: O Lord! My parts are eating (destroying) one another. So
Allah allowed it to take two breaths, one in the winter and the other in the summer. The breath

Him (in the Hereafter), and give (these) good tidings to those who believe.
Quran 2:223
Q31. Why does a woman have to cover herself to prevent lust from men but a man does
not have to cover himself? It is like preventing racism by covering your skin.
Q32. Why are Men in charge of Women? The argument that because man looks after

A Jew and Jewess were brought to the Prophet on a charge of committing an illegal sexual
intercourse. The Prophet asked the Jews, "What do you (usually) do with them?" They said,
"We blacken their faces and disgrace them." He said, "Bring here the Torah and recite it, if you
are truthful." They (fetched it and) came and asked a one-eyed man to recite. He went on
reciting till he reached a portion on which he put his hand. The Prophet said, "Lift up your
hand!" He lifted his hand up and behold, there appeared the verse of Ar-Rajm (stoning of the
adulterers to death). Then he said, "O Muhammad! They should be stoned to death but we
conceal this Divine Law among ourselves." Then the Prophet ordered that the two sinners be
stoned to death and, and they were stoned to death, and I saw the man protecting the woman
from the stones.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: 'Umar said, "I am afraid that after a long time has passed, people may
say, "We do not find the Verses of the Rajam (stoning to death) in the Holy Book," and
consequently they may go astray by leaving an obligation that Allah has revealed. Lo! I confirm
that the penalty of Rajam be inflicted on him who commits illegal sexual intercourse, if he is
already married and the crime is proved by witnesses or pregnancy or confession." Sufyan

descended upon him, he felt the same rigour. When it was over and he felt relief, he said: Take
from me. Verily Allah has ordained a way for them (the women who commit fornication),:

(When) a married man (commits adultery) with a married woman, and an unmarried male with
an unmarried woman, then in case of married (persons) there is (a punishment) of one hundred
lashes and then stoning (to death). And in case of unmarried persons, (the punishment) is one
hundred lashes and exile for one year.

intercourse with her?" The narrator added: At that, (i.e. after his confession) the Prophet
ordered that he be stoned (to death).
Sahih Bukhari 82:813
Q39. Multiple scholars described the verse of stoning and suckling to not exist in the
Quran any longer because of a goat eating it from under Aishas bed. Does this not
seem slightly too coincidental? Also, does this not mean the Quran is changed?
[Narrated 'Aisha] "The verse of the stoning and of suckling an adult ten times were revealed,
and they were (written) on a paper and kept under my bed. When the messenger of Allah
expired and we were preoccupied with his death, a goat entered and ate away the paper."

Q40. How can all black dogs be devils? Why make a woman equal to a dog/donkey?
Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of 'Allah (may peace be upon him) said: When any one of
you stands for prayer and there is a thing before him equal to the back of the saddle that
covers him and in case there is not before him (a thing) equal to the back of the saddle, his
prayer would be cut off by (passing of an) ass, woman, and black Dog. I said: O Abu Dharr,
what feature is there in a black dog which distinguish it from the red dog and the yellow dog?
He said: O, son of my brother, I asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) as you
are asking me, and he said: The black dog is a devil.
Sahih Muslim 4:1032
Masruq reported: It was mentioned before (from) A'isha that prayer is invalidated (in case of
passing) of a dog, an ass and a woman (before the worshipper, when he is not screened).
Upon this 'A'isha said: You likened us to the asses and the dogs. By Allah I saw the Messenger
of Allah (may peace be upon him) saying prayer while I lay on the bedstead interposing
between him and the Qibla. When I felt the need, I did not like to wit to front (of the Holy
Prophet) and perturb the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and quietly moved out
from under its (i. e. of the bedstead) legs. Sahih Muslim (Book #004, Hadith #1038)
Q41. If Islam is a religion of peace, why would Muhammad (PBUH) order the death of a
jewish poet simply because he conspired against him and wrote nasty poems?
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: Allah's Apostle said, "Who is willing to kill Ka'b bin Al-Ashraf who
has hurt Allah and His Apostle?" There upon Muhammad bin Maslama got up saying, "O Allah's
Apostle! Would you like that I kill him?" The Prophet said, "Yes," Muhammad bin Maslama said,
"Then allow me to say a (false) thing (i.e. to deceive Kab). "The Prophet said, "You may say
it." Then Muhammad bin Maslama went to Kab and said, "That man (i.e. Muhammad demands
Sadaqa (i.e. Zakat) from us, and he has troubled us, and I have come to borrow something
from you." On that, Kab said, "By Allah, you will get tired of him!" Muhammad bin Maslama
said, "Now as we have followed him, we do not want to leave him unless and until we see how

his end is going to be. Now we want you to lend us a camel load or two of food." (Some
difference between narrators about a camel load or two.) Kab said, "Yes, (I will lend you), but
you should mortgage something to me." Muhammad bin Mas-lama and his companion said,
"What do you want?" Ka'b replied, "Mortgage your women to me." They said, "How can we
mortgage our women to you and you are the most handsome of the 'Arabs?" Ka'b said, "Then
mortgage your sons to me." They said, "How can we mortgage our sons to you? Later they
would be abused by the people's saying that so-and-so has been mortgaged for a camel load
of food. That would cause us great disgrace, but we will mortgage our arms to you."
Muhammad bin Maslama and his companion promised Kab that Muhammad would return to
him. He came to Kab at night along with Kab's foster brother, Abu Na'ila. Kab invited them to
come into his fort, and then he went down to them. His wife asked him, "Where are you going
at this time?" Kab replied, "None but Muhammad bin Maslama and my (foster) brother Abu
Na'ila have come." His wife said, "I hear a voice as if dropping blood is from him, Ka'b said.
"They are none but my brother Muhammad bin Maslama and my foster brother Abu Naila. A
generous man should respond to a call at night even if invited to be killed." Muhammad bin
Maslama went with two men. (Some narrators mention the men as 'Abu bin Jabr. Al Harith bin
Aus and Abbad bin Bishr). So Muhammad bin Maslama went in together with two men, and sail
to them, "When Ka'b comes, I will touch his hair and smell it, and when you see that I have got
hold of his head, strip him. I will let you smell his head." Kab bin Al-Ashraf came down to them
wrapped in his clothes, and diffusing perfume. Muhammad bin Maslama said. " have never
smelt a better scent than this. Ka'b replied. "I have got the best 'Arab women who know how to
use the high class of perfume." Muhammad bin Maslama requested Ka'b "Will you allow me to
smell your head?" Ka'b said, "Yes." Muhammad smelt it and made his companions smell it as
well. Then he requested Ka'b again, "Will you let me (smell your head)?" Ka'b said, "Yes."
When Muhammad got a strong hold of him, he said (to his companions), "Get at him!" So they
killed him and went to the Prophet and informed him. (Abu Rafi) was killed after Ka'b bin AlAshraf."
Sahih Bukhari 59:369
Q42. If Islam is a religion of peace, why would Muhammad (PBUH) torture Kinana ibn alRabi to find location of allegedly hidden treasure. He was also beheaded.
Kinana b. al-Rabi', who had the custody of the treasure of the B. al-Nadir, was brought to the
apostle who asked him about it. He denied that he knew where it was. A Jew came (Tabari says
"was brought") to the apostle and said that he had seen Kinana going round a certain ruin
every morning early. When the apostle said to Kinana, 'Do you know that if we find you have it I
shall kill you?' he said Yes. The apostle gave orders that the ruin was to be excavated and
some of the treasure was found. When he asked him about the rest he refused to produce it, so
the apostle gave orders to al-Zubayr b. al-'Awwam, 'Torture him until you extract what he has,'
so he kindled a fire with flint and steel on his chest until he was nearly dead. Then the apostle
delivered him to Muhammad b. Maslama and he struck off his head in revenge for his brother
Mahmud.

Q43. Why would Muhammad want to commit suicide after receiving the revelations?
Narrated 'Aisha: The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allah's Apostle was in the form
of good righteous (true) dreams in his sleep. He never had a dream but that it came true like
bright day light. He used to go in seclusion (the cave of) Hira where he used to worship(Allah
Alone) continuously for many (days) nights. He used to take with him the journey food for that
(stay) and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food like-wise again for another
period to stay, till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The

angel came to him in it and asked him to read. The Prophet replied, "I do not know how to
read." (The Prophet added), "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I
could not bear it anymore. He then released me and again asked me to read, and I replied, "I
do not know how to read," whereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I
could not bear it anymore. He then released me and asked me again to read, but again I
replied, "I do not know how to read (or, what shall I read?)." Thereupon he caught me for the
third time and pressed me and then released me and said, "Read: In the Name of your Lord,
Who has created (all that exists). Has created man from a clot. Read and Your Lord is Most
Generous...up to..... ..that which he knew not." (96.15) Then Allah's Apostle returned with the
Inspiration, his neck muscles twitching with terror till he entered upon Khadija and said, "Cover
me! Cover me!" They covered him till his fear was over and then he said, "O Khadija, what is
wrong with me?" Then he told her everything that had happened and said, 'I fear that
something may happen to me." Khadija said, 'Never! But have the glad tidings, for by Allah,
Allah will never disgrace you as you keep good reactions with your Kith and kin, speak the
truth, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guest generously and assist the deserving,
calamity-afflicted ones." Khadija then accompanied him to (her cousin) Waraqa bin Naufal bin
Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza bin Qusai. Waraqa was the son of her paternal uncle, i.e., her father's
brother, who during the Pre-Islamic Period became a Christian and used to write the Arabic
writing and used to write of the Gospels in Arabic as much as Allah wished him to write. He was
an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to him, "O my cousin! Listen to the story of
your nephew." Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" The Prophet described
whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same Namus (i.e., Gabriel, the Angel who
keeps the secrets) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the
time when your people would turn you out." Allah's Apostle asked, "Will they turn me out?"
Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said: "Never did a man come with something similar to
what you have brought but was treated with hostility. If I should remain alive till the day when
you will be turned out then I would support you strongly." But after a few days Waraqa died and
the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while and the Prophet became so sad as we have
heard that he intended several times to throw himself from the tops of high mountains and
every time he went up the top of a mountain in order to throw himself down, Gabriel would
appear before him and say, "O Muhammad! You are indeed Allah's Apostle in truth" whereupon
his heart would become quiet and he would calm down and would return home. And whenever
the period of the coming of the inspiration used to become long, he would do as before, but
when he used to reach the top of a mountain, Gabriel would appear before him and say to him
what he had said before. (Ibn 'Abbas said regarding the meaning of: 'He it is that Cleaves the
daybreak (from the darkness)' (6.96) that Al-Asbah. means the light of the sun during the day
and the light of the moon at night). Sahih Bukhari (Book #87, Hadith #111)
