INFORMATION SUBMITTED
ELIDA An employee complaint led inspectors from the U.S.
Department of Labors Occupational
Safety and Health Administration to
a wood pallet manufacturing facility
in Elida operated by A & D Wood
Products, where they found workers
at risk of amputation, explosion and
other life-threatening hazards.
Employees operated machines
without eye protection and without
effective safeguards from moving
parts amid large amounts of combustible wood dust piled throughout
the facility. The force from such an
explosion can cause deaths, injuries
and destruction of buildings.

These unsafe working conditions

prompted OSHA to issue four willful, four repeated and 19 serious
health and safety violations. Its Aug.
21, 2014, inspection found the 10
employees of A & D Wood Products
were routinely exposed to amputation,
combustible dust and other dangerous hazards. The company faces proposed penalties of $133,540 and has
been placed in the agencys Severe
Violator Enforcement Program.
A & D Wood Products operates
a manufacturing shop that exposes
workers to real hazards daily, creating an environment that forces
workers to make a choice between
their lives and their livelihood, said
Kim Nelson, OSHAs area director in

Toledo. With 27 violations, its clear

the safety and health of its workforce
is not a priority for them.
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board
identified 281 combustible dust incidents between 1980 and 2005 that
led to the deaths of 119 workers,
718 injuries and extensive damage to
numerous industrial facilities.
OSHA issued four willful violations related to the hazards, including
the combustible dust violations. A
willful violation is one committed
with intentional, knowing or voluntary disregard for the laws requirement, or with plain indifference to
employee safety and health.
Workers were also exposed to
amputation and other injury hazards

About 61,000
Ohioans poised
to lose Medicaid

COLUMBUS (AP) Roughly 61,000 Ohioans

in Medicaid are expected to lose their coverage this
weekend after failing to take steps to renew their
health benefits as required, the states Medicaid director said Thursday.
Those recipients who did not update their household income or other eligibility information as
requested are poised to be terminated from the program Saturday.
Federal law requires states to redetermine annually whether recipients remain eligible for Medicaid.
The federal-state program for the poor and disabled
provides coverage to nearly one out of every four
Ohioans.
The process was on hold in Ohio for a year as the
federal health care law was implemented and the state
moved to a new computer system. But Ohio recently
restarted its checks. Renewal packets will now be
mailed monthly to recipients who have been on the
program for year.
We have tried to streamline the process as much
as possible, Ohio Medicaid Director John McCarthy
said Thursday as he provided an update to a state
legislative panel.
Its unclear how the number of people being
dropped from Medicaid this month compares with
previous months when recipients had to renew their
benefits.
Thats what were trying to figure out, McCarthy
told reporters after the hearing. He said the old system might not have measured it properly.
Also uncertain is whether most of those poised
to be terminated from Medicaid are most likely still
eligible and just failed to respond to their renewals.
See MEDICAID, page 11

COLUMBUS The number of persons with concealed

carry licenses in Van Wert County continued to increase
in 2014 but not as fast as the previous year, according to
statistics released Thursday by Ohio Attorney General Mike
DeWines office. There were 161 concealed carry licenses
issued in the county last year and another 125 concealed
carry licenses were renewed in the same time period.
Currently, permit holders who wish to renew their licenses
must do so every five years.
Numbers were slightly down in Allen County with 514
new concealed carry licenses and 642 renewed, down from
843 new and 506 renewals in 2013.
Putnam County also showed fewer new licenses issued
at 127 in 2014 compared to 322 in 2013 but more licenses
were renewed in 2014 at 95 compared to 61 in 2013.
Across the state there were 58,066 new licenses issued
and another 52,146 were renewed in 2014. The numbers
dropped from the 96,972 new concealed carry licenses
issued in 2013. The number of renewals increased from
2013s 48,370. The number of temporary conceal carry
licenses were nearly identical in the two years with 57 temporaries issued in 2014 compared to 53 in 2013.
The surge in interest in concealed carry licenses in 2013
resulted in 373 new and 121 renewed in those 12 months.
Also in the Tri-County, Allen County had 12 conceal
carry licenses suspended, three revoked and nine denied.
In 2013, five were suspended and nine denied with zero
revoked.
One license was revoked, two were suspended and one
denied in Putnam County in 2013, compared to one each
revoked and suspended and three denied in 2013.
Four conceal carry licenses were suspended and two
were revoked during the year in Van Wert County. One
applicant was denied a license last year. Comparatively
speaking, in 2013 only two licenses were suspended in the
county and four licenses were denied.

Ohio reviews
ginseng rules
COLUMBUS (AP) State
officials plan to review new ginseng regulations as the number
of Ohioans digging and selling
the medicinal root increases.
Seventy ginseng dealers
were registered in Ohio last
year, up from 49 in 2013, The
Columbus Dispatch reported.
The state also saw an increase
in ginseng diggers last year,
nearly doubling from about
4,600 in 2013 to more than
8,900 in 2014.
As the states ginseng trade
picks up, the Ohio Department
of Natural Resources is asking
those who harvest, buy and sell
the plant to weigh in on possible regulation changes at a
public meeting next month.
Ohio ranks about sixth
among 19 states that grow the
plant. Wild ginseng can be
found throughout Ohio, but
is especially prevalent in the
Appalachian region.
The dried root worth
as much as $800 a pound
is said to be valuable for its
medicinal benefits. Its in especially high demand from eastern Asian markets, where some
have used the plant for thousands of years.
In Ohio, it is illegal to dig
ginseng outside of its designated harvest season, which
runs from September through
December. Ginseng dealers
must obtain a permit and have
their yearly ginseng collection
weighed and certified by the
state before it can be exported.
State records show about
5,892 pounds of ginseng were
legally collected in Ohio last
year.
Regulators are discussing charging a fee for nowfree annual dealer permits, and
considering whether diggers
who dont currently need a
permit should be required to
receive and pay for one.

time pealed forth the notes from the
brazen mouths of the new chime of
bells, just hung in the tower of
St. Johns Church..
The new chime was rung for
the first time last evening to commemorate the day fifty years ago
when Rev. Fr. Bredeick, sailed for this
country with his band of pioneers.
The party, headed by Rev. Bredeick,
then the Vicar General of the church
at Osnabruck, Germany, numbered
about 40 souls including the Krift family, and the Caspar Pohlmann family,
which included John Pohlman, Henry
(Clemens) Pohlman and others.
CASPAR POHLMAN, age 43,
his wife MARIA CLARA, 33, and
their four young children: JOHANN
HENRICH age 10, ANNA MARIA 6,
CASPAR CLEMENS AUGUST (or
Caspar Henrich as listed on the passenger list), 4, and ELISABETH at 9
months left Wellingholzhausen on 11
August 1844. They began their journey by making their way to Bremen,
joining the steady flow of traffic on
the roads to the port. They traveled
with others from Wellingholzhuasen
and the surrounding area, including Carl Henrich Krieft (aka Caspar
Henrich), his wife, Cath. Elisabeth,
and their eight children; Johann
Heinrich Lause and his wife, Maria
Elisabeth, and their five children;
Caspar Heinrich Gerker and his wife,
Maria Elisabeth, with their four young

children; and Heinrich Minkhous and

his wife, Sophia. The party, organized
by Father Otto Bredeick, numbered
about 40 souls. They sailed north
on the Weser River to Bracke. From
there they sailed on brigs to the port
of Bremerhaven.
They had supplied themselves
with their own bed clothes and food.
Daily rations of wood for cooking
and water were included in the price
of the ticket. On the 24th of August,
1844, they set sail from Bremerhaven
via the North Sea, aboard the
Brig Isabella. Except for Father
Bredeick, who had secured a cabin,
they traveled in steerage, which was a
lower converted cargo deck, where if
passengers didnt fill in the space, also
often held cargo. The families were
among the 117 passengers crammed
into rows of bunk beds with little
room and ventilation. They slept, ate
and socialized in the same spaces.
Passengers had to cook the best way
they could on the main deck, possibly
in a cook shop. This was the cause of
so many quarrels and .many a poor
woman with her children could get
but one meal done. Sometimes they
would get nothing warm for days
and nights, when a gale of wind was
blowing and the sea was mountains
high and with waves breaking over
the ship in all directions. On rough
crossings, the passengers often had
little time to spend in the fresh air on
the upper deck.
The Isabella, captained by
Captain Andressen, arrived in the
New York harbor on 19 September
1844. The group disembarked the
next day and began their journey
to northwest Ohio. According to a

5 September 1894, Delphos Daily

Herald article, The colony traveled
on water to Defiance and arrived
there November 1st, whilst Father
Bredeick went by rail, arriving here a
few days earlier, October 17th. They
joined the families who had come
before them to an area which at that
time was known as Ten Mile Woods,
part of which was called Section Ten,
now known as Delphos.
JOANNES CASPAR, brother of
Matthias (the subject of our first
article) was born 26 April 1801,
in Vornholts Kotten (cottage) to
JOHANN DAVID and CATHARINA
MARIA (Bircke) POHLMANN.
JOANNES CASPAR was working in the carpentry trade when he
married. At the age of 29, he married
24-year-old MARIA CATHARINA
CLARA HENSELER on 19 October
1830 in St. Matthaus Catholic Church

Cast set for The Fox on the Fairway

in Melle, Germany. Their marriage

record contains a church dispensation because they were third degree
of Consanguinity (second cousins). Maria Catharina Clara born
23 February 1806, was the daughter of Frans Henrich HENSELER
and Maria Elisabeth STOLTMANN.
Caspar and Maria Catharine Clara
lived in Meyer of Halingdorfs Kotten
(cottage) where six children were born
to them before they left for America.
The first child CATHARINA MARIA
was born 31 August 1831 and died
on 23 January 1834 at the age of two.
JOHAN HENRICH, the first-born
son, was born 14 August 1833. The
third child, MARIA CATHARINA,
born on 14 March 1836, died three
days before her third birthday on 11
March 1839. The only daughter to
survive to adulthood and marry was
ANNA MARIA, born 2 May 1838.
CASPAR CLEMENS AUGUST, the
last son born in Germany was born
3 October 1840. The last child born
in Germany was ELISABETH, born
nine months before they emigrated.
After their arrival Caspar, Clara
and the family settled in the southeast quarter of Section 19, Marion
Township, Allen County (at that time it
was Putnam County). Here three more
children were born to them but all died
in infancy. John was born 7 March
1846 and died a year and three months
later on 7 June 1847. Maria Theresia
was born 25 April 1848 and died 9
August 1848 when she was three and a
half/months old. Henry Joseph, born 6
August 1851, lived only 14 days.

Bingham, president of the
Quail Valley Country Club, is in
a difficult position: the golfer he
thought would play for his club
has switched sides having been
recruited by his counterpart and
opponent, the cocky and arrogant
Dickie.
The huge bet he had foolishly wagered is now likely to be
lost. Fortunately, he discovers that
Justin, his newly hired hand, is
actually quite a good golfer and
finagles his membership into the
club. Justin does not disappoint
and has a huge lead when close to
its end the tournament is interrupted by bad weather.
When Justin learns that Louise,

a waitress at the clubhouse, has lost

the engagement ring he gave her
she accidentally flushed it down
the toilet he comes unglued.
The game resumes the next day
but Justin loses the lead. Upset, he
takes an unfortunate swing breaking his arm. Bingham is desperate
and the appearance of his wife complicates matters when she catches
him much too close to Pamela, his
sex-starved vice-president.
Can Bingham find a replacement
for Justin to win the game, win the
wager, and get his life in order?

We All Seek Love

The Persian poet and mystic Rumi was intoxicated by love and his poems are so
filled with outpourings of love for his fellow man, for creation, and for God that
one is almost embarrassed upon reading them. When reading his poetry, one feels
almost as if one is reading the intimate diaries of someone who is gushing over his
beloved: When I am with you, we stay up all night. When youre not here, I
cant go to sleep. Praise God for those two insomnias! And the difference between
them.
Rumi taps into the almost infinite longing within all of us to be united to our beloved, and ultimately, to be united to the source of our very existence. The mystical
epiphany for Rumi was that what we have been seeking has actually been seeking
us, and we need not go to the ends of the earth to find it because its actually within
us: What you seek is seeking you. Rumi tells us The minute I heard my first love
story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers dont finally
meet somewhere. Theyre in each other all along.
We all long to reunite with the primal source of our being. The ancient Greeks
explained this by saying that before birth we were joined to a complementary being
which was essentially our other half. Nowadays people talk of having a God-shaped
hole within us. Rumi said My soul is from elsewhere, Im sure of that, and I intend
to end up there. He also said There is a candle in your heart, ready to be kindled.
There is a void in your soul, ready to be filled. You feel it, dont you?
Christopher Simon

Lauren Hill makes it through

full season despite tumor
By JOE KAY
Associated Press
CINCINNATI The Mount St. Josephs womens basketball team held its postseason banquet in a hospital room
warmed by Lauren Hills smile.
The 19-year-old freshman made it
through a full season while raising more
than $1.3 million for research into the
type of brain tumor that will likely end
her life. Shes occasionally hospitalized
for treatment now but still holding to
each day as tightly as she can and urging
others to appreciate their time together.
Thats truly Lauren, coach Dan
Benjamin said in an interview on
Thursday. Thats the message shes
Hill
been saying forever. Shes just thankful
God gave her that opportunity and that
role because shes the one that could handle it. And shes done
it so gracefully.
Even at the banquet, she comes in her wheelchair and shes
all smiles. And thats truly amazing. I dont know what her
pain level is or how much suffering shes going through but
the girl smiles every time she gets a chance.
Hill was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor during
her senior year of high school. She decided to go ahead and
attend college and play for the Division III school. The NCAA
granted permission to move up the schools opening game
because of her worsening condition and she made a layup for
the first basket in a game at Xavier Universitys 10,000-seat
arena.
Hill was able to play in four games early in the season,
making five layups. As her condition worsened, she became
an honorary coach, attending games when possible. She tires
easily now and needs to use a wheelchair often.
The team had planned to have its annual end-of-the-season
banquet on Feb. 22 a date that matches Hills uniform
number but the final game got pushed back because of
the weather. Hill was getting treated at Cincinnati Childrens
Hospital.
So the team decided to take the banquet to the hospital,
using a meeting room. Instead of having a big meal and
awards, the players got sandwiches and spent time together.
We were going to get something to eat, show up, talk about
the season and celebrate being with each other, Benjamin

Cats slow down Musketeers

DELPHOS Both Jefferson and

Fort Jennings were pushing the pace and
having good success scoring the basketball the first half.
That stopped as the Wildcat defense
put the clamps on the Musketeers the
third period and rode an 18-9 advantage
in that eight minutes to a hotly-contested
69-54 non-league boys basketball victory Thursday night inside The Stage of
Jefferson Middle School.
The game had been postponed from
Feb. 14 and was truly the final home
game for lone Jefferson (12-9) senior
Kurt Wollenhaupt.
We have a little ceremony in the
locker room after the game where
seniors get a name plate on their locker
in their honor. Kurt is the epitome of
perseverence, Jefferson coach Marc
Smith explained. He never got a lot of
plasing time but he stuck with it; whatever we needed of him, he did without
complaint. He is loved by his teammates
and coaches.
The shooting was the story in the
opening period as the units combined
for 14-of-25 from the field, including
6-of-10 from long range, with Delphos
being extremely hot beyond the arc at
5-of-6. With the Musketeers concentrating much of their defensive efforts (a
box-and-1) on Trey Smith (31 markers
- 4 bombs - 10 boards, 3 steals) he
counted 10 in the stanza (2 treys)
Jace Stockwell (18 markers, 6 assists,
5 steals, 4 boards) tore off an 11-point
period (3 triples). Still, the Musketeers
minus Connor Wallenhorst (out for
the year) and Nick Von Sossan (indefinitely) due to injuries but getting junior
point guard Alex Berelsman (4 markers,
7 assists, 5 caroms) back Saturday
had their own strong effort from Austin
Krehes (22 points - 3 trios - 8 boards),
who netted nine in the stanza. When

corner at 35 ticks, Jefferson led 21-17.
The scoring pace slowed quite a bit in
the second period as the teams combined
for 9-of-28. Kehres was still strong,
tacking on eight points, while Smith
countered with seven. There was one tie
and four lead changes. The Orange and
Black had its last edge of 31-28 on two

singles by Drew Grone (12 counters, 4

rebounds) at 1:58 but the Red and White
replied with a 5-0 streak: a Drew Reiss
(8 markers, 3 assists) 3-ball at 1:02 to tie
it and two Smith tosses at 14.8 to get the
lead at 33-31.

Falcons release veteran RB Steven
Jackson
ATLANTA The Atlanta Falcons on
Thursday released running back Steven
Jackson, who in two seasons with the
team couldnt recapture his 1,000-yard
form that made him one of the leagues
top backs with the Rams.
The release of Jackson, 31, was not a
surprise. He led the team with 707 yards
rushing and six touchdowns in 2014 but
averaged only 3.7 yards per carry. In
2013, his first season with the Falcons,
he had 543 yards rushing in 12 games.
Jackson was a first-round pick by the
Rams in 2004. He had a streak of eight
straight seasons of more than 1,000
yards rushing, including career-high
totals of 1,528 yards and 13 touchdowns
in 2006.
Jackson has had at least 20 catches in
10 straight seasons, including a careerbest 90 receptions in 2006.
The Falcons, expected to have a
defensive makeover under new coach
Dan Quinn, the former Seattle defensive
coordinator, also could have a new look
on offense. Running backs Jacquizz
Rogers and Antone Smith could be unrestricted free agents.
Devonta Freeman, who was second
on the team with 248 yards rushing as a
rookie last season, could be the teams
only returning running back.
The release of Jackson solidifies
expectations the Falcons will look for

help at running back through the draft or

free agency. The team is expected to look
for pass-rush help with the No. 8 overall
pick and running back is another priority.
Jackson already was the NFLs active
leading rusher when he signed a 3-year,
$12 million contract with Atlanta on
March 14, 2013. He ranks 16th
with 11,388 yards rushing in 11
seasons. Among active players,
Frank Gore is next with 11,073
yards to rank 20th.
Jackson was looking for a
winner and a chance to return to
the playoffs when he signed with
Atlanta. Instead, the Falcons
were a combined 10-22 the past
two seasons and Mike Smith was fired
as coach following a 6-10 finish in 2014.
Jackson hasnt been to the playoffs since
his 2004 rookie season.

BUFFALO, N.Y. The Buffalo
Bills are negotiating to sign veteran free
agent Josh McCown to address their
long-standing needs at quarterback.
A person familiar with discussions told The Associated
Press on Thursday that contract
talks are taking place between
the two sides. The person spoke
on the condition of anonymity
because the Bills do not comment on contract discussions.
The negotiations began after
the 35-year-old spent the previous two days visiting the Cleveland
Browns. Two weeks ago, McCown
spent two days meeting with Bills officials and touring Buffalo. He has also
visited Chicago and the New York Jets.
McCown is a 12-year NFL veteran
who went 1-10 in his only season with
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being
released by the team earlier this month.
Overall, he has a 17-32 career record
split among six teams.

Chiefs waive TE Fasano to free up salary cap space
KANSAS CITY, Mo. The Kansas City Chiefs waived
veteran tight end Anthony Fasano on Thursday, freeing up
about $2 million in salary cap space that they could use to
keep All-Pro linebacker Justin Houston.
The Chiefs have been unable to come to a long-term deal
with Houston, making it likely that they will place the franchise
tag on him. But the deadline for that designation is Monday and
the Chiefs needed to free up salary cap space to do it.
If franchised, Houston would play next season on a 1-year
deal worth about $13 million.

Jeffersons mix of 2-3/2-1-2/1-3-1
zone and man finally began to assert
itself in the third. After the Musketeers
tied the score at 35 on a Mark Metzger
jumper at 5:30, Smith hit a step-through
putback at 5:05 to give the hosts the
lead for good. That began a 14-2 spurt
over the next four minutes for a 49-37
edge on a putback by Grant Wallace
(5 rebounds) at 1:07. Kehres hit a toss
and Aaron Neidert a transition layin at
28 ticks before Josh Teman hit two foul
shots at :00.2 to put Delphos up 51-40.
The Musketeers tried to extend their
defense in the fourth period in an effort
to force turnovers and come back but
since Jefferson only committed three
errors (12 for the game) and Jennings
seven (20), the closest they could get
was 10. Jefferson downed 8-of-11 free
throws as well (18-of-23 for the game
for 78.3%) to help grow the lead to 22

with the benches emptied by the

Fort Jennings (6-15) finished 20-of52 from the field (5-of-15 downtown)

Brandon Wehri (bothered by foul trouble) added five; and 19 fouls.
We finally decided to play defense,
rebound and get to the foul line. We had
a nice heart-to-heart with the players
at halftime, Coach Smith added. We
knew we could score no matter what
defense they threw at us; we just finally
had to stop them. The players realized
were not going to outshoot people.
Jefferson ended up with 21-of-50
shooting (9-of-18 downtown) for 42
percent; with 30 rebounds (9 offensive);
and 16 fouls.
In junior varsity action, Jefferson
subdued Jennings 59-53.
The victors had four in double digits:
Alex Rode 14, Drake Schmitt 13, Trey

Jennings had three in twin figures: Jeff Hoersten with 13 and Luke

involved with domestic violence from
two games to six games.
Our collective bargaining agreement has rules for implementation of the
personal conduct policy and when those
rules are violated, our union always
stands up to protect our players rights,
Smith said. This is yet another example
why neutral arbitration is good for our
players, good for the owners and good
for our game.
Doty added Henderson erred in purporting to rely on factual differences in
the cases of Rice and Peterson yet failing to explain why the well-recognized
bar against retroactivity did not apply
to Peterson and with the Rice decision
aside, Goodell should have understood
his duty to only apply the new policy
moving forward.
Dotys courtroom has long been a
ground zero of sorts for NFL labor matters and his ruling pattern has favored
the union more often than not.
Still, his latest rebuke of the NFL
came as a surprise because it defied a
collectively bargained arbitration process.
Agent: Panthers Hardy seeking
reinstatement from NFL
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Panthers
defensive end Greg Hardy is seeking
immediate reinstatement from the NFL
after a federal judge cleared way for
Adrian Petersons return to the league.
Hardys agent Drew Rosenhaus said
Thursday, We are working very closely
with the NFLPA on this process.
Like Peterson, Hardy spent the
majority of last season on the commissioners exempt list preventing him
from playing.
Hardy, 26, was convicted last summer on two counts of domestic violence.
He appealed and had both charges dismissed Feb. 9 when his accuser couldnt
be located to testify.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy
wrote in an email the ruling on Peterson
is irrelevant to Hardys case.
Hardy hasnt been disciplined,
McCarthy wrote. There is nothing for
him to seek reinstatement from at this
point. His case remains under review.

The signing allows Indianapolis to keep the AFC Souths

best quarterback tandem intact. Over the past two seasons,
Hasselbeck has provided his wisdom and perspective for the
much younger Andrew Luck. Hasselbeck also played in seven
games during that time, completing 37 of 56 passes for 431
yards, two touchdowns and one interception for a 93.7 passer
rating.
Late last season, with his contract set to expire, Hasselbeck
started getting asked about retirement. At one point, it sounded as if Hasselbeck might be leaning in that direction.
But before the conference title game, Hasselbeck told
reporters he wanted to consider his options and thought eventually he would decide to continue playing.

Inherent Vice stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon and Katherine Waterston.

Inherent Vice

dentists, a surfsaxophone legend

(Owen
Wilson)
whos faked his own
death, Eric Roberts
in a looney bin,
Reese Witherspoon
as a federal district
attorney who likes
an occasional walk
on the wild side, and
a
massage-parlor
hoochie-coochie
mama whispering
a cryptic warning:
Beware the Golden
Fang.
As Doc tries to
sort out whos who
and whats what,
things keep getting
weirder and wilder.
The
characters
names give you
some idea of the
storys stoned-out
La-La-Land twists
and turns: Michael
W.
Wolfmann,
Sauncho
Smilax,
Coy
Harlingen,
Rudy Blatnoyd, Puck
Beaverton.
Brolin, with a
perpetual scowl and
a serious crew cut,
nearly steals the
show as Lt. Det.
Bigfoot Bjornsen,
who also moonlights

as an actor (watch
for him late in the
movie
cropping
up in a doctored
episode of Adam12). Phoenix sports
a set of mutton-chop
sideburns that look
like theyre about
to invade his mouth
at any moment.
Funnyman Martin
Short gets only 10
minutes onscreen as a
lecherous dentist, but
he makes the most
of every second.
Witherspoon
and
Phoenix have one
entire conversation
against the backdrop
of
a
country
song, Jack Scotts
Burning Bridges,
which seems to be a
nod to not only their
relationship in the
movie, but also their
previous co-starring
roles as John and
June Carter Cash
in Walk The Line
(2005).
Phoenix worked
with
Anderson
previously, in The
Master, and the
two have another
fine synergy here.
As Doc stumbles,

unwashed
and
unkempt, through
the case, hes also
stumbling through
the end of an era,
the come-together,
flower-power 60s,
and into another, the
uncertain, unhinged
70s. Doc knows
the times, they are
a-changinand that
wistful, wayward,
weed-saturated vibe
seeps into everything
about Inherent Vice.
The story takes its
title, we learn, from a
maritime term about
a piece of cargos
hidden
defect,
something that makes
it an unacceptable
risk
to
insure.
Peopleand places,
relationships, even
moments in time
can be defective,
too, can spoil and go
bad, as Doc knows
all too well. But the
defective, damaged
goods Inherent Vice
parades on screen
only adds to the
fractured fun of its
hippy-dippy, timetripping yarn.

Sleepwalking causing trouble for couple

DEAR
ABBY:
I am engaged to
Tony, whom I have
known since first
grade. We live with
his mother under the
same roof, but in separate rooms. Tony is
perfect in every way
except one: Hes a
restless sleeper.
Sometimes
he
wakes up shouting.
He has fallen down
the stairs and woken
up in different rooms.

DEAR COWERING: You can help

of us had work issues with is about to

retire. We are concerned that its only
a matter of time until she approaches us
and wants to join our
lunch group. We have
thought about saying
its loose-knit and
we have no formal
time or place, but
thats not exactly true,
and were sure she
wouldnt be deterred
by that.
I wish I had the
nerve to tell her the
group is for us rankand-file employees
-- no supervisors allowed. Because we
may run into her from
time to time once she
is retired, we want to
be gracious but assertive about our refusal
to have her join us.
Advice? -- GROUP
MEMBER IN THE
SOUTH
DEAR GROUP
MEMBER: If the
woman approaches
you (keep in mind
that your worries
may not materialize
and you may not be
asked),
remember
shes no longer your
supervisor and can
no longer affect your
life in any way. If she
asks if she can join
you, you should tell
her no. And if she
asks why, explain it to
her exactly as you explained it to me. Its

Todays
Horoscope
By Eugenia Last

Friday, February 27, 2015

Uncertainty or a lack of confidence will stifle your progress. Explore your options and
do some research to help you
get out of your rut and begin
moving forward. The more
you learn, the easier it will be
to make a decision. A positive
outlook, knowledge and experience will ensure success.
PISCES (Feb. 20-March
20) -- A preoccupation with
professional responsibilities
will take its toll on an important relationship. Friction
is likely unless you make
a focused effort to nurture
what youve got. Re-evaluate
whats most important to you.
ARIES (March 21-April
19) -- An expensive vacation
will lead to debt. However,
you can add a spark to your
day with a congenial gathering of friends. You dont need
cash to have a good time.
TAURUS (April 20-May
20) -- Beneficial changes can
be made if you join forces
with like-minded people. Superiors will be receptive to
your ideas if you present facts
and offer solutions.
GEMINI (May 21-June
20) -- Dont be afraid to ask
for help if you are feeling
drained or disappointed about
a personal issue. Look to a
trusted friend for his or her
perspective and guidance.
CANCER (June 21-July
22) -- Youll experience a
low- energy cycle. You can
improve your mood by getting involved in activities or
hobbies that bring you joy and
a sense of accomplishment.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -You need to take better care
of yourself. You cannot be
at your best if you give in to
overindulgence. Use your
imagination and envision a
healthier and happier you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
-- You will be disappointed
by someone who reneges on
a promise. In order to meet a
deadline, put in extra hours.
You will receive full credit for
your efforts.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
-- Dont be too hard on yourself. You have the intelligence, wisdom and intuition
to succeed. Trust in your abilities is more important than the
opinions of others.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov.
22) -- Youll face a minor
disagreement. Do your best
to keep the peace by making concessions and sharing
household
responsibilities.
Being flexible will spare you
grief and improve the outcome.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23Dec. 21) -- You need to remain open to innovative ideas
and educational opportunities.
Positive changes are possible
if you branch out and refuse
to settle for less when you can
have more.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19) -- Your sense of humor and quick wit will lead to
greater popularity. Others will
be startled to see how entertaining you can be. A healthy
dose of laughter will do you
good.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
19) -- Dont hold back when
it comes to sharing your creativity and insight with others.
Lucrative gains are imminent
if you attract the attention of
intellectual and influential
allies. Set a new standard or
trend.
