Writing.
Read this information about banks and shops in
Britain.
In Britain, banks open at nine thirty and close at
three thirty. They open five days a week. Most
shops open at nine oclock and close at five thirty
or six in the evening. Some shops in small towns
close early one day a week. In London, many shops
are open until seven or eight oclock one night a
week. This is called late night shopping.
Now write a paragraph about the opening and
closing times of banks and shops in your country.
Friday evening,
Darling James,
How are you? Hows Delia? I hope you are
both well. I miss you very much.
The flight to London was fine and the Tower
Hotel is very comfortable. The conference is
quite interesting, but I was very busy.
Yesterday Paul and I were at a meeting with
some American people a man from World
Video, and a girl from CBS in New York. The
girl was very interesting and I want to see her
again. Also I want to see Douglas Kennedy.
Hes a director at the BBC and he wants to
see our film.
Tell Delia theres a restaurant next to the
hotel and it has lovely chocolate ice cream.
See you soon.
Lots of love,

Gavin is a student from Cardiff College of Further Education. He is spending a year at the Sorbonne
University in Paris. After a few weeks in Paris he wrote a letter to his friends at the college.
Paris,
21st October
Dear All,
Im writing this letter in my room and I can see the river Seine from my window. Its beautiful.
Im staying in a student hostel some miles from the center of Paris. Ive got a big room and I use it as a
bedroom and a study and a sitting room! I share a big kitchen with the other students in the hostel. I sometimes
cook here, but I usually have my meals at the University, the food there is good and quite cheap.
The University is about two stops from here on the Metro (the underground). It only takes ten minutes to
get there, so thats easy. Most of the other students cycle, but I havent got a cycle yet.
Im enjoying myself very much. Paris is a fascinating city. I really like walking round the old part. Its
very different from Cardiff!
Do write if you have time.
All the best
Yours
Gavin.

Sharon lives in Scawsby, in Yorkshire. She hates Scawsby.
Theres nothing interesting to do in the evenings, says Sharon. Its very boring.
Scawsby is a few miles from a big town called Doncaster. It takes about twenty minutes by bus to get from
Scawsby to Doncaster. But Sharon doesnt like Doncaster because there isnt anything to do there either. I go
there about once a week, but nothing exciting ever happens there. I want to live in London. In London theres
