Lesson Plan in Technology and Livelihood Education Electricity

Concept: Electricity is one form of energy which cannot be seen, but its presence can be felt
due to numerous effects it has in our daily living. The endless assortment of things that
electricity does, in great part, can be broken down into forms or combinations of three basic
effects.
Value Concept: Electricity is vital but awareness on energy conservation/saving is important for
todays economic crisis.
I.

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Explain the basic effects of electricity in our daily living.
2. List examples of the basic effects of electricity in our daily living.
3. Adhere to the importance of energy saving/conservation.

II.

Subject Matter: Effects of Electricity

C. Audio-Visual Materials:
Power point presentation
Simple Galvanometer
Simple Electromagnet

III.
Learning Activities:
A. Motivation/Review:
1. Find out what students knew about electricity.
2. Let students list ten names of appliances for two minutes.
3. Today, well find out some of the effects of electricity in our daily living.
4. Play the power point slides.
B. Lesson/Discussion Proper:
a. Discuss the possible lists of the students and lead them to the discussion that
electricity as a form of energy which cannot be seen but its presence gives comfort and
convenience in our daily living. The endless assortment of things that electricity does,
in great part, can be broken down into forms or combinations of three basic effects.
b. Explain the three basic effects of electricity in our daily living
b.1. Thermal Effect or Heating Effect. When current passes through metallic
wires with high resistance with high resistance they become hot and they glow. A
current cannot flow without causing some heat
1. Desired Heating Effects intended to have heat like flatiron, rice cooker etc.
2. Not Desired Heating effects unintended like ordinary lamp
b.2. Magnetic Effect. When current flows through a copper wire, it is surrounded
by a
magnetic field - the area around the wire becomes magnetized immediately.
1. Sounds like buzzer, doorbells, horns, speakers, etc
2. Motion like electric motors, electric fans, washing machine, etc.
3. Electromagnet
4. Galvanometer (analog or mechanical measuring instruments)
b.3. Chemical Effect. When an electric current passes through a liquid it may
cause a chemical reaction to occur in the liquid-electrolysis. Electrical energy can be
used to plate one metal in a thin layer onto another metal.
1. Electroplating gold and silver plated utensils and jewelries
2. Battery Charging rechargeable batteries, car batteries

C. Generalization:
Ask questions that would elicit ideas/concepts taken up. Below is the list:

Electricity is a form of energy called electrical energy.

Electricity has numerous effects in our daily living.
The endless assortment of things that electricity does, in great part, can be
broken down into forms or combinations of three basic effects.
There are three basic effects of electricity : heating effect, magnetic effect, and
chemical effect

D. Valuing/Application:
Pose this problem to the student. Answers here may vary. An example would be:
ELECTRICITY is vital but awareness on energy conservation/saving is important for todays
economic crisis.
The problem: If you were ironing your school uniform, what would be the best thing to
apply energy saving?
IV.

Assessment/Evaluation:
A. The table below shows ten names of appliances/devices. Write the effects of
electricity on the third column based on the given names of appliances.
No.
Appliances/Equipment
Effects of Electricity
1
Electric stove
2
Electric fan
3
Doorbell
4
Electric heater
5
Loud speaker
6
Electric bulb
7
Battery (when it is
being charged)
8
Cellphone batteries
9
Washing machine
10
Rice cooker
B. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is wrong.
1. In our daily life we make use of different forms of energy
2. Electricity is a form of energy called electrical energy.
3. The effects of electricity can be heard, felt, seen or smelled.
4. When electric current passes through a wire it produces electricity.
5. Many appliances work on the basis of one or more effects of electricity.

V.

Assignment:
1. What are the physiological effects of electricity?
2. Refer to some FIRST AID books in the library and list down other first aid treatments
you can apply when a person is electrocuted.
3. Be ready to share them before the class
