Job Description and Person Specification Business Development & Project Support Officer (Sheffield)
23 - 28,000 per annum (depending on experience) plus performance-related bonus

A. Background

Incorporated in 1998 in the UK, International Organisation Development Ltd (IOD) provides
consultancy support to organisations, government bodies and international agencies who are trying to improve
what they do and how they do it. The organisation has experience in over 50 countries and has undertaken over
500 consultancy assignments. In 2010 IOD underwent a major rebranding exercise and acquired another
Organisation Development consulting firm, Consultancy Works (CW). IOD now undertakes work under two
brands: IOD PARC and CW, with IOD PARC focusing primarily on the international development market and
CW on the UK and European public and private sector. IODs work ranges from global evaluations of
international policies and institutions, through to one-to-one coaching and support.
We currently have a board of 4 Directors, 15 qualified and experienced permanent staff members engaged in
consulting services and 5 members of staff supporting through administration and research roles. We have a
network of over 400 associates as well as a number of partner consultancy organisations and academic
institutions with whom we work on a regular basis. Our head office is in Sheffield with an additional office in
Edinburgh and a number of consulting staff who work from home offices in the UK and overseas.

B. Job Summary
IOD PARC is a medium size consulting company based in Sheffield and as part of our ongoing expansion is
recruiting for a Business Development/ Project Support Officer to assist in the implementation of the
Companys short and long term business development strategy and support consulting work in the international
development sector.
The successful candidate will have between 2 5 years previous experience in a business development role and
be entrepreneurial, flexible and able to think on their feet. They will be able to work both independently, on
their own initiative, as well as part of a team, and be willing to take responsibility and able to manage their own
workload to meet changing demands.
This is a full-time, permanent contract for a business development/ project support role based in our Sheffield
office. We are looking for candidates who are systematic, organised, rigorous and good at managing detail to
become part of a successful growing business.
Business Development

Identify future work opportunities though designated web sites, client liaison and other business
development activities.
Respond creatively, to a consistently high standard, to bidding and tender requests, enquiries arising
directly through our help desk facilities, the general email account, telephone enquiries, marketing
initiatives and consultant networking.
Co-ordinate small to medium size bids, including: setting out a time table of activities/ work plans;
identifying inputs and the team to deliver; working with the Finance Team and identified Consultants to
develop financial proposals.
Turn enquiries (as appropriate) into consulting opportunities and/ or reinforcing relationships with existing
clients/ developing relationships with new prospective clients.
Manage IOD central systems for tracking of enquiries and the consultant data base. Provide regular reports
for management and propose system improvements as appropriate.
Maintain and develop Associate Consultant relationships, including: regular liaison; maintenance of
information; and work with Finance and Consultant Team Leaders to identify, contract and manage short
term contract consultants.

Support Officer to consulting assignments


Provide support to IOD consulting work either as a named input or in support of IOD staff/Associates
already engaged by clients.
Manage the engagement process of Associate Consultants for contract delivery and provide the required
administrative steps for contractual and budgetary issues (working closely with the IOD Finance Team).
Make international travel and logistical arrangements.
Attend information events on behalf of IOD and provide briefings.
General Support
Participate in biannual company retreats in the UK.
Other general support as required.
C. Person Specification
Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications

First degree (2.2 or above) or equivalent level of education.


Professional training/qualifications in business administration/and or marketing.
Between 2 5 years working in a business development/ project support role.
A high level of personal authority demonstrated by a mature and professional attitude.
Excellent ICT skills including advanced working knowledge of MS Office 2007 Outlook, Word, Excel and
PowerPoint. A positive attitude towards using virtual meeting technologies such as video conferencing and
Skype.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
Able to show a supportive and respectful manner with people from a wide range of backgrounds and
cultures and to build effective relationships with clients, Associates and colleagues at all levels.
Time management and prioritisation skills including the ability to work efficiently and on own initiative.
A willingness to take responsibility.
Ability to search for, and assimilate information from disparate sources.

Desirable Skills and Experience


Post-graduate qualification in relevant field.
Interest in international development.
Experience of working with an internationally dispersed team and across time zones.
D. Additional Information
Holidays: 25 days per annum
Office hours: flexible 37.5 hour week; core times 10am-4pm
Probation period: 3 months with formal review
Performance assessment arrangements: company wide annual system with quarterly reviews
Accountable: to the Business Development Manager
