Review: Kkl Fashion Pub, District VII

At the weekend Kkl puts on music

evenings, fashion shows, DJs and readings. Her guests from all social classes
and age groups appreciate the
unusual, says Tth. Each of the
garments she sells is a one-off piece.
"I like vibrant materials. Perhaps I'm
a bit childish," admits the owner, who
has been designing for 15 years. Just
as with her clothing, she makes an
effort to learn what her customers like
so that Kkl keeps on developing.

kl Fashion Pub is in
District VII's Kazinczy utca
opposite Szimpla Kert. Since
summer 2010 it has offered not only
the usual caf fare but also displays
clothing designed by the owner Virg
Tth under the label "tthvirg".
The two small rooms of Kkl
(Blue Horse) invite one to take a seat
or to browse and try on the clothing.
Right next to and opposite the
entrance are diverse vibrant clothes,
a bar and a passage to the caf,
where there are some tables and
chairs and two large windows looking
onto the street.
Originally Tth simply wanted to
open a new fashion boutique but the
idea of making something more of it
came to her because of the layout of
the shop. In addition to clothing, she
wanted there to be the possibility for
customers to drink coffee and tea
and relax a little.
This has been so successful that
the fashion side of the shop has
become almost secondary. Kkl

quickly became a popular meeting

place. Tth thinks this is because it is
not a ruin pub, of which there are
already plenty in Budapest.
The bar stools are comfortable,
and those sitting there can take a
look at the selection written up on
the wall as well as the relatively short
menu. Besides a coffee machine,
which according to Tth will soon

offer up self-roasted coffee, there are

various exclusive types of vodka.
Plans are in the works for freshly
brewed beer and, in particular, wine.
Originality and Tth's preference for
things that are not universally available determine the selection. There
are also a few cocktails that she
dreamed up herself, which are
readily tried by curious guests.

classes for children including egg
painting, marzipan and chocolate
figuring, and baking kalcs (a
braided Hungarian sweetbread
traditionally served at Easter).
