Lenape advances to Group IV semifinals

Taste of Mt.
Laurel moved
to Harrington to
accommodate
more residents
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
When Taste of Mt. Laurel started in 2010, it was a small event. It
was held only for senior citizens,
and the venue was the Mt. Laurel
Community Center.
Within six years, Taste of Mt.
Laurel has upgraded venues,
opened its doors to all township
residents and now stands with
Fall Festival as the two best attended township events of the
year. The sixth annual Taste of
Mt. Laurel will be held on Thursday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Harrington Middle School.
The event is upgrading to a
larger location for the second
time in three years. In 2013, the
event moved from the Mt. Laurel

Community Center to Hartford

School to make it easier to funnel
residents in and out of the venue
during the two-hour event. This
year, the township decided to
move from Hartford to Harrington for the same reason.
The venue I know is better for
residents to come in and out, and
theres more parking, said
Meghan Shaddow, recreation director for Mt. Laurel Township.
The move to Harrington School
hasnt impacted restaurants interest in attending the event. At

press time, the township already

had 22 restaurants scheduled to
participate, more than the 15
restaurants the township had registered two weeks prior to last
years event.
The township accepts participating restaurants on a firstcome, first-served basis until all
of the spots are full. Typically, 20
to 25 restaurants are featured.
This is also the first time Taste of
Mt. Laurel is being held in
March. The last five years, the
event was held in January. Township manager Maureen Mitchell
said the township made the move
in hopes the better weather would
attract more residents.
Shaddow said the recreation
department has received numer-

ous calls about the new date from

residents since the beginning of
the year. She said many people
were satisfied with the move to
March.
They are very happy to be
having this event again this year,
Shaddow said.
So far, about 100 residents have
pre-registered. The township typically gets a large influx of registrations in the days leading up to
the event. While Taste of Mt. Laurel is free and open to all township residents, township officials
are asking attendees to pre-register so the restaurants know how
much food to make. To register or
for more information, call Shaddow at (856) 234-0001 ext. 1220 or

cant come soon enough. Officially, thats the start of
spring. Whether Mother Nature
agrees, though, is anyones guess at
this point. Early forecasts show she
will be good to us, but how much can
we actually rely on forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, to
get us out of the doldrum into which
winter plunged us. Winter started off
just fine, but it put a damper on everything, and everyone, in February and
so far this month. Just last week, snow
was dumped across the state.
Winter has not just affected all of

Well most likely be paying more in
taxes, in some way, at some level, for
pothole repairs and salt purchases.
Snow has affected local businesses
as well, especially retail shops. Bad
weather kept patrons inside for the
last few months. The arrival of spring

will hopefully turn that around, and

quickly.
Snow and biting cold have kept people in the mindset of no end in sight,
and have prevented many from taking
day trips to our states wonderful goodweather spots, or from planning future
trips, as well.
In a little more than 60 days, the official start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
The good news is that it started to
warm up this week. Spring really does
look like its right around the corner.
Lets hope Mother Nature cooperates
and doesnt reverse the tide back to
winter. Please spare us!

Extended kindergarten a big hit,

By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Last March, the Mt. Laurel
Board of Education approved an
extended kindergarten option
after receiving a sizable amount
of interest from parents.
About six months into the programs inaugural year, positive
feedback and a steadily increasing enrollment have parents interested in enrolling their child in
the program for next year.
With kindergarten registration
well underway, district director of
communications Marie Reynolds
said many parents have expressed interest in the program
for next year. Parents can enroll
their child in EKO when they register for regular kindergarten
classes. The district plans to have
one room in each school for the
program again in 2015-16.
Many people have called here
and asked how to get the EKO
form for the program, Reynolds
said. Theyre coming in at a pretty good rate.
Extended kindergarten is a
center-based learning system
where students reinforce skills
taught in regular kindergarten
class, engage in fun and interactivity activities and have time for
more social-emotional development.
Students enrolled in half-day
kindergarten have the option of
attending extended kindergarten.
Students in morning kindergarten attend EKO in the afternoon and students in afternoon
kindergarten attend EKO in the
morning.
The program is tuition based
with the tuition fee $400 per
month.
Interest in extended kindergarten has increased as the
school year has progressed.
Reynolds said enrollment numbers in EKO have continued to
grow since September.
It started off slowly, but we
left enrollment open throughout
the year and we continued having
people coming in throughout the

856-547-4850

www.greensideupsod.com
year, she said.
Suzanne Haftman, supervisor
for community education and extended day care, and Diane
Willard, director of child study
team services, updated the Mt.
Laurel Board of Education on the
programs progress at its Feb. 24
meeting.
They said the success of the
program this year will allow it to
continue through next year and
likely beyond.
Each of Mt. Laurels six elementary schools has one room
dedicated to extended kindergarten. Right now, the district has
132 students enrolled in the program.
The district has rolling admission throughout the year as space
allows.
Springville and Fleetwood
Schools have both filled all of
their EKO spots this year. The
large amount of interest in the
program stems from positive reaction from parents, staff and district officials in the programs inaugural year.
Reynolds believes the program
has exceeded many peoples expectations.
In the EKO program, they are
doing things that are so productive, Reynolds said. The children are very happy. The staff is
very warm.
Haftman said the program has
exceeded parents expectations,
with many parents being excited
with the amount of individual attention their children are getting,
the interactive aspects of the program and how their children are
building upon what they learn
during their regular kindergarten class.
Reynolds credits much of the
programs success to the EKO
teachers and staff.
She said the staff did a great
job with coming up with interactive activities and new ways to engage the students.
Were very pleased with the
outcome, Reynolds said. They
were so excited and enthusiastic
and had great ideas.

and AEFTY teens sponsored a "A

Day of Tikkun Olam" on Jan. 19.
More than 100 Adath members,
including about 75 children and
teens, participated in 11 different
community service projects. This
event was to commemorate Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday,
which has become a national day
of service.
This event was a great way to
bring the Adath Emanu-El community together, from toddlers to
seniors, while doing so many
good deeds for the community.
Some of the organizations that
benefited from the projects were
the Burlington County Animal
Shelter, Ronald McDonald House,
Cathedral Kitchens, Samaritan
Hospice and more.
Additionally, Adath shared its
day of service with women and
children from a local mosque to
encourage and develop relationships across religions.

Lenape District plans fourth annual

Give to Goodwill Clothing Drive
The Lenape Regional High
School Districts fourth Annual
Give to Goodwill Clothing Drive
Competition is taking place now
through Friday, April 17. During
this eight-week drive, students,
faculty, family and friends at all
four district high schools will be
on a quest to see which school can
collect the most pounds of donations per student. Cherokee is the
reigning champ, having captured
first place in the last three years.
This Give to Goodwill community service project was organized by students and faculty advisors from each high school in
partnership with Goodwill Industries of Southern New Jersey and
Philadelphia. Proceeds from the
sale of all donations collected
fund Goodwills job training programs and career services that

help local residents with disabilities and disadvantages get to

work. Since its inception in 2012,
Lenape Regional High School District students have collected
109,387 pounds of donations for
Goodwill.
It is exciting to witness the
friendly competition between the
students and faculty from
Lenape, Shawnee, Cherokee and
Seneca, but enriching to know
our local community members
are the real winners in our partnership with Goodwill, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said.
The clothing drive competition
coincides with the spring cleaning season. Goodwill donation
containers will be conveniently
located in each schools parking
lot making for easy access for students, staff and families to donate

gently-used clothing, accessories,

toys, books and other small
household items. Once a container is full, a Goodwill truck will
empty it, count the number of
bags in it, and then compute the
number of pounds of donations
collected. Donation results for
each school will be periodically
posted on the districts website
and on Goodwills Facebook page.
The school that collects the most
donations (based on pounds per
student) will be crowned the 2015
champion and receive a plaque
that can proudly be displayed at
the school until the 2016 competition begins. In addition, the Volunteer Service Award recipient
from the champion school will receive the Outstanding Volunteer
Award and a $500 scholarship for
their charitable works.
