Many beginning teachers face the problem of effective teaching and controlling the dynamics of
the classroom in their early career. Questions such as What do I do if a student disrupts my
lesson? And How can I control a class without imposing overly rigid and inflexible rules are
common among beginning teachers. In fact it is true that all teachers are constantly searching
for techniques and approaches which can restore orderliness in the classroom and create a
conducive learning environment. Ultimately good classroom management practices will lead to
a positive learning environment and a pleasant experience for both teachers and students.
1. Group Task (30%)
In groups of 2-3, you are required to collect the following information from various sources and
present the information in graphic form in a portfolio:
i. the concept of classroom management
ii. roles and responsibilities of a teacher in effective classroom management
iii. the variuos models of classroom discipline management
iv. types of classroom disciplinary problems among primary pupils including special needs pupils
and various approaches that can be used in handling them.
2. Individual task (70%)
Write a report on a case study (refer to Attachment 1) involving disciplinary problems in a
classroom and your recommendations on the approaches that can be used in solving them
based on the information you gathered in your portfolio. Use the following format for your report:
i. Introduction
ii. Analysis of the disciplinary problems described in the case study in graphic form (i-Think)
iii. Root cause of the described disciplinary problems.
iv. Your recommendations on the approaches that can be used to solve the problems based on
the various models of discipline.
v. Summary and self- reflection
