COMPANY BACKGROUND

2.1 OVERVIEW OF COMPANY

MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH is a manufacturer of commercial internal combustion
engines founded by Wilhelm Maybach and his son Karl Maybach in 1909. Wilhelm
Maybach was the technical director of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) - a
predecessor company of the German multinational automative corporation Daimler
AG until he left in 1907. On 23 March 1909, he founded the new company,
Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH (literally "Aircraft Engine Building Company"),
with his son Karl Maybach as director. A few years later the company was renamed
to Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH (Maybach Engine Construction Company), which
originally developed and manufactured diesel and petrol engines for Zeppelins, and
then rail cars. The Maybach Mb.IVa used in aircraft and airships of World War I.

The company first built an experimental car in 1919, with the first production model
introduced two years later at the Berlin Motor Show. Between 1921 and 1940, the
company produced various classic opulent vehicles. The company also continued to

build heavy duty diesel engines for marine and rail purposes. During the World War
II, Maybach produced the engines for Germany's medium and heavy tanks. The
company was renamed MTU Friedrichshafen in the 1960s.

MTU derives from Motoren- und Turbinen-Union meaning "Motor (Engine) and
Turbine Union".

Meanwhile, Diesel Product and Support (M) Sdn Bhd (DPS) was established in 1981
by Dato' Sri Hj. Mahamad Fathil bin Dato Mahmood . In 1984 , the company was
appointed as the main distributor of MTU products in Malaysia and was awarded a
franchise by MTU Friedrichshafen.

In 1994 , the company has invested a total of RM 20 million to develop the site of
114,560 square meters in Manjung , Perak. The service center is built in accordance
with the MTU standard to perform complete engines overhaul. In 1995, Diesel
Product and Support (M) Sdn Bhd (DPS) has been rebranded as MTU Services (M)

Sdn Bhd (MSM). This is a step that shows the company's commitment to the MTU
brand .
In 2003, MSM has been agreed that the Motor Technology and Industry (MTI) based
on Rawang for precision machining service, testing, and improvement for all types of
models MTU engines. In 2010, the MSM has collaborated with Boustead Heavy
Industries Berhad ( BHIC ) to carry out restoration work engine in Malaysia and
Brunei. In July 2013, this company nomnated and won the HR Best Company To
Work For In Asia which make this company repute sky high among their competitors
in workers business.

2.3 COMPANY ACTIVITIES

Since the beginning of motorization, MTU has successfully kept up with and met the
requirements of the massive global industrialization. As result of its diversity and
leadership in the research and development of power and propulsion, MTU was
found in the innards of the established such as Diesel, Daimler-Benz and Maybach.
Other than that MTU group continues to propel the industry with jet and turbo shaft
engines, industrial gas turbines, diesel engines, power transmission, electronic
monitoring and control system. In a worldwide marketing and service network,
MTU has bonded partnership with all internationally renewed manufacturers of
advanced technology, aircraft engine development and production land, sea and air.

People that involved with the marine or application in MTU are kept well-informed
of the latest on the products and processes. Training programs are provided to both

in-house staff and customers. The MTU engineers are kept well-informed to pass the
knowledge on daily and routine checks, trouble shooting and proper diagnosing of
the products and technology they have acquired. In addition to that, a team of
specialist from Germany is available to assist in any major problems that may arise.

The MTU Services (M) Sdn. Bhd. Workshop in Seri Manjung, Perak is fully
equipped by training facilities and its providing the hands-on training of end-users.
The use cutaway section of diesel engines, engine mock-ups, further information
from manuals and videos. This company provides different levels of training that are
as wide and diverse. Technicians and operators in MTU are up grated according to
the regional level, the complete their training at the principal level in
Friedrichshafen, Germany. In this levels, the training is into the appropriate sections

When a MTU product is acquired, one acquires not only the best service available in
the industry but the training and knowledge to use the machines for optimum
performance.

Not only does MTU offer knowledge to its clientele but it also

acquires feedback from them to ensure the development of products and services that
meet requirement of products and services that meet requirements and exceed
expectations.
