Articles, aspect and tense in French
Summary
Our claim in this paper is that, besides a conceptual resemblance between, count nouns and telic
predicates and analogically between mass nouns and atelic predicates, there are two
more language specific correlations. The first one is the correlation between on one hand noun
phrases introduced by the so called partitive or plural indefinite article (du or des) and French
imperfect (imparfait) and, on the other hand, between the indefinite article un and the French
aorist (pass simple). The second correlation, which concerns the so called discursive
instructions, shows the semantic correspondence between the indefinite article and the French
aorist and between the definite article and the French imperfect.
