Hexagon Metrology
Germany brings new
production hall into
operation
The official opening of the new,
18-metre-high production hall for
Hexagon Metrology Germany took
place in Wetzlar on 27th and 28th
September. The production floor area
is now some 1500 m larger. A host
of customers, personalities from
politics and commerce, partners and
journalists were there to celebrate
with us in Wetzlar.
"We are proud to celebrate the opening of the new production hall on such
a grand occasion after more than
two-and-a-half years of planning and
construction," says Holger Fritze,
General Manager of Hexagon Metrology Germany.
ROMER Bike
Measurement System
In collaboration with the Laboratory
of Polymer and Composite Technology (LTC) at the Swiss Federal Institute
of Technology (EPFL), Hexagon
Metrology has developed the ROMER
Bike Measurement System. It is a
portable 3D measurement solution,

Long-term relationships,
made by Hexagon Metrology
Portable measuring arms are designed for use under harsh conditions.
That is why, every once in a while, a check-up can help to ensure that
these high-quality instruments keep in good shape over many years.
Hexagon Metrologys service facilities on all continents help arm
users to keep the long-term relationship with their portable CMM
(and of course other metrology equipment) alive. Measureup presents
some examples of what Hexagon Metrologys 13 service centres
for measuring arms can offer.
1. What: Treating tools like a
partner pays off. Especially
when working together
means being productive
under difficult shop floor conditions.
2. What:
Constantly trained service
professionals carry out certification and calibration. These
procedures guarantee the
highest levels of system accuracy and repeatability over a
long period of time.

FEATURE
PC-DMIS 2012:
extending a
philosophy
ClearanceCube

Change Manager
The PC-DMIS
philosophy
Digital prevention
The new ClearanceCube in PC-DMIS
2012 practically works like an invisible
protection shield, which preempts
any potential collision between the
work piece and the measuring probe.
ClearanceCube attaches a protective
virtual envelope around the part
being measured and guides the probe
to avoid that area. The software
automatically completes all safety
moves so the operator can simply
box-select a group of features, then
use the Path Optimizer feature to
determine the most effective path.
Most importantly, the ClearanceCube
is assigned to the selected feature, not
the plan, which simplifies additions
and changes to the inspection routine.
Automatic adaptation
Change is inevitable. Better to have
measurement software that not only
embraces change but does it automatically. When inspection data is imported
into CAD, PC-DMIS 2012 has the ability
to remember the current translation of
assembled components, so the CAD file
does not need to be repositioned. Revi-
Fast finding
Sortable Features is another addition
to the user interface of PC-DMIS 2012.
It provides a fast and easy way
to search features by ID, type,
program sequence or time in various
dialog boxes.
Easy interpretation
PC-DMIS 2012 is revolutionizing data
delivery again with the introduction
of SmartText. SmartText in Summary
Mode allows operators to quickly
realize dimensional compliance
through color-coded and symbolic
text. Time spent sorting through an
inspection report is avoided.

CHANGE WITH
HEXAGON
METROLOGY
Hexagon Metrology has decided
lately to align its corporate design
more closely with its parent company,
Hexagon. The rebranding goes along
with the launch of a new logo, new
corporate colours, new fonts; put
simply: everything which makes up the
companys face to the outside and the
inside. Measureup has spoken to
Norbert Hanke, President Hexagon
Metrology, in his office in London to
find out more about the companys new
visual identity and the strategy behind
it.

Quality as a competitive
advantage
Zimmermann also wishes to ensure
that the high standard of Meyer ships
will continue to be achieved in the
future and actively promotes the
training of young surveying engineers.
Meyer Werft sees consistent quality as
a key competitive advantage. For this
reason Ralph Zimmermann has been
upgrading surveying equipment and
practices at the shipyard.

METROLOGY'S
MISSION
TO MARS
Errors are not
an option when
it comes to
manufacturing
the largest Mars
rover to date.
22 MEASUREUP
october 2012
In the beginning
The pressure was high at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL, Pasadena, CA),
where scientists, engineers and technicians worked evenings and holidays
to design, manufacture and test
the cruise stage and descent stage
instruments and rover for the Mars
Science Laboratory (MSL) project.
Gerald Clark, a senior quality engineer
and leader of quality assurance
inspection services for JPL, says that
the MSL project is a galactic-scale
prototyping operation with tens of
thousands of parts in various stages of
product development. In most cases,
the assigned team made three or less
of any single component for
the project.
The first group of components and
assemblies were used for a variety
of destructive and nondestructive
testing. The second were sent on the
Mars mission. An identical rover stayed
behind in a simulated Mars environment lab, where it is being used to run
through anticipated maneuvers before
they are attempted millions of miles
away on Mars.
