Thermal Oxidation
Now vertical instead of horizontal
New high efficiency heat exchanger concept

EISENMANN, the environmental technology specialist based in Bblingen,

Germany, introduces the new vertical
thermal incinerator. This system promises more output at lower investment
and operating costs. The external
appearance of this innovative system
clearly sets itself off from other
thermal incinerator systems: The combustion chamber and heat exchanger
unit are no longer arranged horizontally - as in traditional design - but
vertically.
Thermal recuperative exhaust gas
purification systems used as downstream processors for the disposal
of volatile organic compounds from
surface treatment have played an
essential role in industry for a long
time. They typically work with tubular
or plate heat exchangers for energy
recovery. Innovative heat exchanger
tubes are the basis for the system.
These ensure high efficiency, since
the crude gas flows through the tubes
with high turbulence. The higher
efficiency reduces the heat exchange
section length by one-third, as compared to the traditional design.
The flow optimization achieved in this
way is continued in the combustion
chamber. There the hydrocarbons come
into direct contact with the conically
spreading flame of the burner, which
converts them into carbon dioxide and
water vapor at temperatures around
720 C. The oxidation process is controlled considerably better in comparison with previous systems. Pre-ignition
is reduced by the guide vanes of the
swirl burner, which mixes the crude gas
with the natural gas serving as primary
energy. This reduces unwanted CO
generation at high solvent loading.

This also pays for itself in another

way: Improved combustion is possible
with lowercombustion chamber temperatures and less fuel.

The new swirl burner ensures high turbulence of the crude gas flowing into the combustion chamber.

The compact design is a result from

the skillful interplay between the swirl
burner and the reduced length of the
heat exchanger. Both elements make
it possible to provide the thermal incinerator with a vertical arrangement
instead of its previous horizontal
design. The advantages are obvious:
Extreme thermal loading, which can
lead to system collapse in combustion
processes running uncontrolled, is no
longer possible. In view of the vertically arranged segments of the thermal
incinerator, the material stresses
resulting from thermal expansion are
significantly minimized.
Maintenance and service of the new
thermal incinerator offers a number of
attractive features. For example, both
the cold and the hot heat exchanger
sides can be cleaned conveniently.
The system requires only 25 percent
of the floor area of previous thermal
incinerator systems, offering the plant
planning engineer more design possibilities in the layout. And one further
advantage: EISENMANN has provided
an additional option for customers
with special requirements, such as
those in the graphite industry: the
thermal self-cleaning of the thermal
incinerator using the burn-out principle via external heat exchangers with
hot gas bypass.
The European environmental directive
1999/13/EEC, better known as the
VOC directive has become national law
and focuses intensely on the disposal
of volatile hydrocarbons. The vertical
thermal incinerator system newly developed by EISENMANN takes up this
current trend towards lower emission
values. It provides operators of production plants with solvent consumption
exceeding the threshold of five tons
per annum a highly efficient exhaust
gas purification system with a smaller
footprint.
