series 27

Dry barrel fire hydrants are primarily designed for frost areas, where the water main is
located below ground frost zone.

The series 27/00 dry barrel hydrant has two drain outlets located just above the water main level.
The main valve disc is designed with the purpose of flushing the drain channels for soil and other
impurities during opening. These impurities could lead to damage of the main valve disc. After
turning the operation key 2 to 3 times the drain will stop flushing, and the barrel will be filled
with water which will flow directly into the hoses and pumper hose or whatever is connected.
Furthermore, when the hydrant is closed after service, the barrel will drain the water through the
drain holes in the base. Therefore, it is important to make sure that the base is surrounded by
gravel allowing the hydrant to drain and flush without washing off the soil. If not, this could result
in undermining of the pavement.

AVK dry barrel fire hydrants meet or exceed AWWA C-502 and are all UL/ULC listed and FM
approved. The fire hydrants are designed for high performance, easy repair and minimum end user
costs for labor and inventory. Series 27 are available in a modern or nostalgic designs.

16 | Valves and hydrants for fire protection

We t b a r r e l hyd r a n t s
series 24

Wet barrel fire hydrants are designed for non frost areas.

The series 24 wet barrel hydrant is designed with the shut-off device directly at the outflow nozzle
for hose or pumper connection. This means that the hydrant is constantly filled with water and
thus under pressure. The hydrant is mounted directly on the water main, giving full water pressure
instantaniously when needed.

Only after

1/8

turns on the stem the water starts to flow, and after 12 turns the full flow capacity

can be held against the fire.

The hydrant is not for use where the temperature may come below 0 C, due to the risk of frost
bursting. In order to service and maintain the hydrant, we recommend installing an isolating gate
valve on the upstream side.

AVK wet barrel fire hydrants meet or exceed AWWA C-503 and are all UL/ULC listed and FM
approved. The wet barrel hydrants are designed for high performance, easy repair and minimum
end user costs for labor and inventory.

Wet barrel fire hydrants to AWWA C-503-88.

All the AVK hydrants offer numerous features including:

The monitor hydrants are primarily developed for installation in chemical and petrochemical
industrial plants as well as refineries and tank farms, airports and other plants with large
quantities of inflammable liquids posing fire hazards.

Both types of these hydrants are available with 2 x 21/2" hose nozzles and 1 x 4" pump nozzle.
The American type, series 27, is supplied with a 6" base delivered with either a flange connection
or a PE-pipe connection. The European type, series 84, is available with a 4" base with 4" flange
connection.

The monitor elbow in 4" is supplied with an isolating butterfly valve, a suspension arm with a 360
step-less, horizontal adjustment, and a -45 to -90 step-less, vertical adjustment. A spray nozzle
is mounted on the outside to supply 2000 litres/min.

Series 84 also has "easy-open" valves to ensure connection of fire hoses, even if the monitor is in
use. The hydrant can be maintained without installation of an isolating shut-off valve in front of it.
The additional ball shut-off makes it easy to replace internal parts without digging up the hydrant
and without emptying the fire water main. The hydrant is delivered with a vertical connection as
standard; yet a horizontal connection can be offered as an option.

Fire protection with large volumes of water.

Resilient seated gate valves

A published test performed in City
of Roseville, US, has proved that
impurities up to 8.7 mm can be
handled by a DN 150 mm valve without
any problems. The same test proved
that the unique AVK EPDM rubber
quality is the only rubber quality which
instantly returns to the original shape
when the valve is opened again.

p os t i n d i c a to r va l ve s

Post indicators and wall indicators are mounted end to end with the extension spindle
connecting the valve. It is mounted in places where direct access is impossible. It could be
gate valves mounted on a water ring main in a factory area, such as oil refineries, chemical
plants or airports.

The post indicator indicates if the valve is in open or closed position. According to government
regulations, it must be easy for firemen to see if the valve is open or closed, even at a long
distance. The post indicator signs OPEN and SHUT are mounted on the target according to clear
locations and according to valve size.

The post indicator valves are used for underground installation in fire protection systems. The
post indicator flange is incorporated in the top gland, giving a compact design. The post indicator
indicates the position of the wedge, whether it is open or closed.

The basic valve construction is, like the construction of valves for water supply, characterized by
a fully rubber coated wedge, full and straight bore, low torque operation and O-ring stem seals
replaceable under pressure.

A. Stem sealing

14

Stem sealing replaceable under pressure with three

independent stem seals consisting of a NBR wiper
ring protects against dirt from outside. A polyamid
bearing with 2 O-rings ensures low friction and an Oring protects the stem collar preventing leakage when
replacing stem seals under pressure.

16

The unique assembly of the valve body and bonnet

ensures a durable tightness:
A round rubber bonnet gasket fits into a recess in
the valve bonnet preventing it from being blown out
by pressure surges.
The stainless steel bonnet bolts are countersunk in
the valve bonnet, encircled by the bonnet gasket
and sealed with hot melt. Thus there is no risk of
corrosion as the bolts are not exposed to the
medium or soil.

C. Wedge nut

The fixed, integral wedge nut reduces the number of

movable valve parts thus minimizing the risk of
corrosion and malfunction. The wedge nut is made of
dezincification resistant brass with lubricating abilities
providing optimum compatibility with the stainless
steel stem.

D. Vulcanized wedge

The ductile iron core is fully vulcanized with drinking

water approved EPDM rubber internally and
externally. No iron parts are exposed to the medium
and the excellent rubber vulcanization prevents
creeping corrosion underneath the rubber. Guides in
the wedge and on the valve body ensure a uniform
closure regardless of high pressure. Safe operation is
ensured, as the guides prevent overloading of the
stem. The wedge has a large through bore and as
there are no hollows in the core, stagnant water or
impurities cannot collect and cause contamination.

E. PE-pipe end

The PE-pipe end enable direct welding into PE-pipes

by using socket fusion or butt welding resulting in a
fast, effective and secure assembly. A piece of
standard PE-pipe is pressed directly onto the
grooved valve end. The patented grooving combined
with a sleeve around the valve/pipe connection
ensures that the PE-pipe material is pressed into the
grooves on the valve end. The boltless, corrosionfree assembly is as minimum as strong as the PEpipe itself. The full, straight bore ensures minimum
pressure loss and facilitates under pressure drilling.

AVK resilient seated gate valves are designed with a fully vulcanized rubber wedge internally and externally.

With this design no iron parts are exposed to the medium, and the excellent rubber vulcanization
prevents creeping corrosion underneath the rubber. The rubber is vulcanized onto the wedge
by AVK GUMMI A/S, one of Europe's leading manufacturers of high technology moulded rubber
components.

The high quality of AVK rubber is characterized by:

Smell and taste response characteristics highly
suitable for the food industry
Very low deformation ensuring optimum sealing
High impact resistance preventing corrosion
Low friction ensuring low closing torques
EPDM rubber for water supply, NBR rubber for gas
supply

Standard stem sealing system applications

- to DIN standard.
NBR wiper ring
polyamid bearing with 4 O-rings
EPDM rubber manchette

Standard stem sealing system applications

- to AWWA standard.
NBR wiper ring
polyamid bearing with 2 O-rings, replaceable under pressure
with the valve fully open.
O -ring protects the antifriction washers

Optional stem material:

Low zinc bronze

Series 06/35

The light weight flanged gate valve is very suitable for use in fire protection systems as an isolating
gate valve for maintenance purpose.

The pin indicator indicates the wedge position. Micro switches for remote indication of the wedge
in open or closed position are available as an optional extra.

The basic valve construction is, like the construction of valves for water supply, characterized by a
fully rubber coated wedge, full and straight bore and 3 independant stem seals.

Series 25/46

The OS&Y gate valves with flanges are used in above ground
installations. Due to the rising stem it is easy to recognize the
valve position, open or closed, even at a distance.

The basic valve design is characterized by a fully rubber coated

wedge, full and straight bore, low torque operation and O-ring
stem seals replaceable under pressure.

A. Stem sealing

Three independent stem seals offering triple safety:

A NBR wiper ring protects against dirt from outside.
A polyamid bearing with 4 NBR O-rings protects
against galvanic corrosion.
An EPDM rubber manchette sealing acts as the
main hydraulic seal to the flow.

B. Body/bonnet connection

The unique assembly of the valve body and bonnet

ensures a durable tightness:
A round rubber bonnet gasket fits into a recess in
the valve bonnet preventing it from being blown out
by pressure surges.
The stainless steel bonnet bolts are countersunk in
the valve bonnet, encircled by the bonnet gasket
and sealed with hot melt. Thus there is no risk of
corrosion as the bolts are not exposed to the
medium or soil.

C. Wedge nut

The fixed, integral wedge nut reduces the number of

movable valve parts thus minimizing the risk of
corrosion and malfunction. The wedge nut is made of
dezincification resistant brass with lubricating abilities
providing optimum compatibility with the stainless
steel stem.

D. Vulcanized wedge

The ductile iron core is fully vulcanized with drinking

water approved EPDM rubber internally and
externally. No iron parts are exposed to the medium
and the excellent rubber vulcanization prevents
creeping corrosion underneath the rubber. Guides in

AVK gate valves with grooved ends

The series 06/37 AVK gate valve with grooved ends is the perfect valve choice in pipelines for
irrigation, HVAC, and fire protection. The valves fit the quick clamp system and are machined
according to AWWA C606. The grooved end on the valve is fixed to the pipe material e.g. steel
or cast iron - by means of standard clamping couplings.

Over the past 75 years, the grooved end clamping system has proved to be one of the fastest and
most efficient ways of joining pipes due to its high degree of flexibility and rigidity, as well as a
fast and easy assembly.

The system is a fast and effective way to install pipe systems in buildings. The system absorbs
vibrations and noise transmission through the system. It has a certain degree of angular deflection
of the pipe joints and alignment in all positions 360 around the pipe axis. Therefore, the system
has gained a footing in high rise buildings where vibrations and stress of pipe systems are of
significant importance.

The series 06/37 valve is a further development of the well-known VDS-approved gate valve series
06/35 which was originally designed for sprinkler systems. This industry has recognised the time
saving and effective way to connect pipes and fittings.

AVK GROOVED END GATE VALVE, PN 16, CTC

7
8

10
11
12

C. Wedge nut

The fixed, integral wedge nut reduces the number of

movable valve parts thus minimizing the risk of
corrosion and malfunction. The wedge nut is made of
dezincification resistant brass with lubricating abilities
providing optimum compatibility with the stainless
steel stem.

D. Vulcanized wedge

The ductile iron core is fully vulcanized with drinking

water approved EPDM rubber internally and
externally. No iron parts are exposed to the medium
and the excellent rubber vulcanization prevents
creeping corrosion underneath the rubber. Guides in
the wedge and on the valve body ensure a uniform
closure regardless of high pressure. Safe operation is
ensured, as the guides prevent overloading of the
stem. The wedge has a large through bore and as
there are no hollows in the core, stagnant water or
impurities cannot collect and cause contamination.

AVK butterfly valves

AVK offers butterfly valves in three different variants wafer, semi lug and double flanged. All
three variants have a ductile iron body, PN 16, with vulcanized rubber liner from AVKs own rubber
factory. The rubber liner functions as a shut-off for the fire water and as an insertion joint against
the counter flanges. This function eases the installation process significantly.

The disc is made of stainless steel or alubronze in a modern and optimized design to ensure a
free flow.

All butterfly valves are delivered with approved gear box, hand wheel and opening indicator.

AVK check valves

Secondary valves in a fire sprinkler system are not necessarily

gate valves. The AVK check valve is an excellent choice if you
want to avoid reflux. A pump chamber for sprinkler systems
often includes liquids that are not in contact with fire water
and as such, they do not require the same strict approvals.
Examples hereof are the supplementary water for the pumps
and the replenishment of containers and reservoirs from the
public water supply net. Such liquids are handled excellently
with AVK ball check valves, series 53, or AVK swing check
valves, series 41.

The ductile iron body, made in a modern design with soft

sealing elements in an advanced rubber quality from AVKs
own rubber factory, will ensure an efficient shut-off whenever
needed.

Low head loss

The full bore minimizes pressure loss and allows

maximum utilisation of the pump capacity. The disc is
designed with a steel insert fully vulcanized with
EPDM rubber. It provides a drop tight closure and
dueHto the light weight it requires a minimum of force
to open/close.

Easy maintenance and long life

Disassembly of the valve can be performed without

removing the valve from the pipe system by
unscrewing the bonnet bolts and removing the
bonnet assembly including hinge and disc. In case of
damage the necessary spare parts can be changed
before reassembly.
The valve is easy to handle due to its low weight.
The hinge is designed with double keyways and is
tightened around the shaft with bolts to eliminate play
and thus preventing wear of the components. The
resilient seated disc features optimum corrosion
resistance.

005

Features

The valve design features 100% free flow as the ball

does not appear in the valve flow path when in open
position. The straight bore prevents deposits in the
valve. Consequently the AVK ball check valves
feature a very low pressure loss giving the benefits of
optimum use of pump capacity.

53/30
DN 40

Tightness is secured when installed both vertically

andL/S
horizontally, even at very low counter pressure.L/S
At horizontal installation the ball will be placed in
almost closed position, as the valve body supports
the ball against the seat. The ball is rotating during
operation thus giving a self-cleaning function and
minimum wear of the rubber.
The rubber hardness is carefully defined to prevent
the ball from getting stuck in the seat.

BSP

The check valves are optionally available with

different ball weights and balls of solid PUR in
standard weights.

AVK focuses on the environment

AVK recognises the dangers of environmental impact also from a global point of view.
AVK products are part of the infrastructure and as such they are an important part of the
environment.

Therefore, we constantly work on reducing this impact and seek to identify areas of
improvement not only in our production processes but also in relation to our suppliers.

At our factories and in all processes AVK works systematically on:

always complying with environmental and work environmental legislation and other relevant
requirements from authorities.
reducing the amount of waste within the company. Where possible we recycle waste
materials from production or alternatively apply the most environmentally friendly waste
disposal methods.
minimizing the consumption of energy and raw materials.
minimizing the use of materials and processes which may be hazardous to the external
environment or the work environment.
informing and educating employees, enabling them to act in accordance with our
environmental objectives and thereby contribute to minimising environmental hazard.
taking environmental factors into consideration when choosing suppliers.
advising customers on the use and disposal of our products.
continuous improvement on prevention of pollution.
