Germantown tops Homestead in sectional semifinal

BY TROY SPARKS
CORRESPONDENT
Dialing it up from long distance
helped Germantown in their 50-42
win over North Shore Conference
opponent Homestead in the Division 1
sectional semifinal game, March 12, at
Whitefish Bay.
The Warhawks will take their 25-0
record into the sectional final against
Kimberly in a rematch of last years
sectional final at 4 p.m., March 14, at
Manitowoc Lincoln.
The Warhawks focused on one key
player from Homestead. Senior forward Jaylen Key torched Germantown
in their two regular season meetings,
scoring 25 and 26 points. He was held
to a single point in the first half and
wasnt much of a factor until the fourth
quarter with 10 of his 13 coming in
that period when the Warhawks kept
the game under control.
We sagged off our man and
helped on Jaylen, Germantown senior forward Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. said.
We knew that if he didnt get going,
then we knew that we would be OK.
Germantown held an 11-5 lead in
the first quarter but Homestead came
back and cut the lead to 11-10 entering the second quarter. A three point
basket by junior forward Josh Mueller
gave the Highlanders a 13-11 lead,
their first and only lead of the game.
Junior forward Max Keefes basket

tied the score at 13-13. The Warhawks

broke the tie and scored six straight
points and nine total in the last four
minutes of the first half to lead 22-13.
Homestead closed the gap to four
points, trailing at the half 22-18.
Homestead cut their deficit to 2624, but Germantown got hot in the
third quarter on consecutive threes by
junior guard Juwan McCloud,
Lawhorn and senior guard Brian
Studer to boost their lead to 11. They
played better defense and didnt allow
Homestead to score in the last part of
the quarter.
Lawhorn and Keefe made back-toback threes in the fourth quarter to
give Germantown a 45-36 advantage
with 2 minutes 59 seconds remaining
in regulation. The Warhawks survived
poor free-throw shooting in the last
minute of the game, missing five in a
row before Theis made the last one to
close out the scoring.
Germantown helped themselves
with second chance opportunities.
Every day in practice, (assistant)
coach (Mark) Adams always say, Get
offensive rebounds, Lawhorn said.
Homestead is a really big team, and
we used our quickness to get around
them to get offensive rebounds and get
second shots and open threes. In the
third quarter, we had a couple of
those. That really helped us push the
lead out and carry it into the fourth
quarter.

Germantown district researching modular space option for Rockfield school

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Germantown School District will
seek more information about installing modular space for instruction at Rockfield
Elementary School.
The School Board approved a motion
March 9 directing administration to seek
information for installing modular space for
four rooms at the school. The motion directs
administration to report the board within a
month regarding pricing and design for the
modular space. The motion also includes a
request to seek a comparison cost for permanent space at the facility.
If we do go town this path, rest assured
were going to do the right thing for our
kids, School Board President Robert
Soderberg said of the modular option.

Superintendent Jeff Holmes said the

greatest concern for space needs are at
Rockfield.
Rockfield has been the most pressing
situation for us, Holmes said. Holmes said
that projecting how many students will
attend class for a given year is difficult
because district staff do not know precisely
how many students will attend until school
actually begins.
Holmes noted that the age of district
space ranges between 47 and 87 years
and that there have been changes in instruction since the buildings were first constructed.
When these buildings were built, a lot
of the needs werent in place and the buildings you havent been able to keep up
facility-wise, with fulfilling those needs, he
said.

He described three options for addressing space needs at the school:

Changing shared attendance lines
between elementary schools to alleviate
some of the space concerns at Rockfield;
Installing modular space at Rockfield;
and,
Start considering permanent new
space at Rockfield.
Of all the recommendations I have out
there right now, I think that (seeking permanent new space) is the least logical route to
take, given that we dont have information
yet from the community and the board will
likely need much more information of how it
wants to operate as a school district in the
future, Holmes said of the third option.
According to Holmes, four modular
rooms could be installed to provide space
for a music and literacy room and classroom

space for the second through fifth grades.

Holmes said that the district would have to
seek approval from the Town of
Germantown board as far as getting variances to allow for modular space.
Holmes said he talked with a town
supervisor, who indicated there was not currently a town ordinance related to modular
space.
During board discussion, Soderberg referenced possible changes in attendance
areas and asked if there could be a scenario
where two buses would arrive to send two
elementary school age children from the
family to two different elementary schools.
There could, Holmes replied. It could
be difficult, but yes it could.
Board member Lester Spies later added
that with adjusting attendance lines, that
could shift the problem somewhere else.

Were getting closer to April 15: Tax Filing Day. And while there may not be much you
can do to change your results for the 2014 tax year, you can certainly look closely at your
tax returns to find areas you might be able to improve next year and one such area is
your investment portfolio.
Of course, you may also find opportunities in other places, too. Could you have taken
more deductions? Could you have moved some of your debts into a tax-deductible loan,
such as a home equity loan or line of credit? Youll want to consult with your tax advisor
to determine areas of potential savings.
However, you may be able to brighten your tax picture by making some "tax-smart"
investment moves, such as the following:
Resist the urge to trade frequently. It can be costly to constantly buy and sell investments. In addition to the commissions you may incur, and the possibility that such excessive trading can impede a consistent investment strategy, you could rack up a sizable tax
bill. If you sell an asset that youve held for a year or less, any profit you earn is considered a short-term capital gain, which is taxed at the same rate as your ordinary income.
So, for example, if you bought Investment ABC for $1,000 on January 5, 2014, and you
sold it for $1,250 on Dec. 31, 2014, youd be taxed on your $250 gain. If you are in the
28% tax bracket, youd owe $70 in taxes. But if you had waited until January 6, 2015, and
you sold your investment for the same $250 gain, youd pay the more favorable long-term
capital gains tax rate of 15%, which translates into $37.50 in taxes just over half of
what youd owe at the short-term rate. If you habitually sold investments after owning
them less than a year, the taxes could really add up so try to be a "buy-and-hold"
investor.
Increase your 401(k) contributions. If you arent already participating in your 401(k)
or similar plan, start now. And if you are contributing, boost your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You typically put "pretax" dollars in your 401(k), so the more you
add, the lower your annual taxable income. Plus, your earnings can grow tax deferred.
"Max out" on your IRA. Depending on your income level, you may be able to deduct
some, or all, of your contributions to your traditional IRA and these deductible contributions can lower your taxable income. Plus, your investment can grow tax deferred.
(Keep in mind, though, that taxes will be due upon withdrawal, and any withdrawals made
before you reach 591/2 are subject to a 10% IRS penalty.)
If you contribute to a Roth IRA, your contributions are never deductible and wont lower
your taxable income, but your earnings are distributed tax free, provided youve had
your account at least five years and you are older than 59_. In 2015, you can contribute
$5,500 to your IRA, plus an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution if you are 50 or
older and its almost always a good idea to "max out" your contributions each year.
By following a buy-and-hold investment strategy and using those tax-advantaged
accounts available to you, you may be able to help yourself at tax time and beyond.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

preventable treatable beatable

Colorectal cancer screening saves lives

The following information was taken from the
Centers for Disease Control Website.
Among cancers that affect both men and
women, colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or
rectum) is the second leading cause of cancer
deaths in the United States. Every year, about
140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and more than 50,000 people die
from it. But this disease is highly preventable, by
getting screened beginning at age 50.
What You Can Do
If youre aged 50 to 75, get screened for
colorectal cancer regularly. Screening tests help
prevent colorectal cancer by finding precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) so they can be
removed. Screening also finds this cancer early,
when treatment can be most effective.
Be physically active.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Dont drink too much alcohol.
Dont smoke.

1ST ANNUAL
CAR SHOW AUG. 2ND!

Colorectal cancer screening saves lives.

Screening also helps find colorectal cancer at an
early stage, when treatment often leads to a cure.
About nine out of every 10 people whose colorectal cancers are found early and treated
appropriately are still alive five years later.
While screening rates have increased in the
U.S., not enough people are getting screened for
colorectal cancer. In 2012, 65% of U.S. adults
were up-to-date with colorectal cancer screening;
7% had been screened, but were not up-to-date;
and 28% had never been screened.
(Data source: Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC). Vital Signs: Colorectal cancer screening test useUnited States, 2012.
MMWR 2013;62(44):881888.)
Fast Facts
Risk increases with age. More than 90% of
colorectal cancers occur in people aged 50 and
older.
Precancerous polyps and colorectal cancer

dont always cause symptoms, especially at first.

You could have polyps or colorectal cancer and
not know it. That is why having a screening test is
so important. If you have symptoms, they may
include
Blood in or on the stool (bowel movement).
Stomach pain, aches, or cramps that do not
go away.
Losing weight and you dont know why.
These symptoms may be caused by something other than cancer. If you have any of them,
see your doctor. Some people are at a higher risk
than others for developing colorectal cancer. If
you think you may be at high risk, talk to your doctor about when and how often to get tested.
There are several screening test options.
Talk with your doctor about which is right for
you.
Colonoscopy (every 10 years).
High-sensitivity fecal occult blood test (FOBT),
stool test, or fecal immunochemical test (FIT)
(every year).

Shamrock Used by St. Patrick to Reveal the Godhead!

Many viewed the Shamrock are representing rebirth and eternal life prior to Patricks arrival in Ireland. Legend credits Patrick with teaching the Irish
the doctrine of the Godhead, the Trinity by showing the 3-leafed Shamrock. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the
Word (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one. (1 John 5:7, King James Bible). St. Patrick preached in western Ireland, open
air on the Hill of Slane, County Meath explaining the Godhead, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus said on earth, I am the way, the
truth and the life, no man cometh to the Father but by me. (John 14:6).

Receive the Son to Know the Father

How Does This Relate to Us? Would Not St. Patrick Try to Get You to Come to God Through His Son?
Very, very much so because our eternal destinies are determined by the acceptance or rejection of the Word of God. Jesus, the eternal Son of the Father,
with no beginning is called the Word in the gospel of John. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made. John states
that Jesus was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew Man not. He came unto his own, and his own received
him not, but as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name. Jesus
bore Gods wrath on the cross for your sins, shedding His innocent blood to wipe your slate clean, suffered, bore your guilt, humiliation, abandonment
and rejection by men and God. He bore your punishment and went to hell in your place. Receive Jesus today as your Savior, turn from your sins to God,
believe that God raised Him from the dead. and accept Him as Lord of all your life! Jesus will forgive you of any sin no matter how many, how hideous.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting
life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. If you are still living
(in reality dying) in your sins, then confess your sins to Him, and ask Him to save you right now. He will come in, and you will be indwelt by the Holy
Spirit, the third Person of the Godhead, and God the Almighty Father will become your Father! You can now call Him Abba Father, which means
Daddy. Jesus will clean you up through His Word, the Holy Bible. You will sense God working in your life by the inner dwelling and witness of the Holy
Spirit, and He will lead you to pray and guide you in all areas of your life. God will give you peace in your soul, an amazing love back to God and for all
others, and a joy in your heart! Dave 414-453-5982

Boys basketball: Germantown tops Kettle Moraine in regional final

BY TROY SPARKS
CORRESPONDENT
Whatever method Kettle Moraine was
applying to slow the tempo of Germantown
didnt work in their 46-29 loss, March 7, in
the Division 1 regional final at
Germantown.
The Warhawks are used to opponents
changing the pace of the game because
they cant keep up. The three-time state
champs have shown in the past that they
can play at any pace necessary to win.
Teams have done that to us before
through the years, Germantown coach
Steve Showalter said. Not so much this
year because were not as quick. When we
had quicker teams in the past, we dont let
teams (hold the ball) because we can get
out and get steals on those plays.
(Kettle Moraine) were able to control
the ball. They were as quick or quicker than
us. If they didnt want to shoot, they werent
going to shoot until they had a wide open
shot. I think that (KM coach Brad Bestor)
wanted to keep it close. He was just content
to keep it close as long as he could. Luckily
we got a lead, and its easier to play that
kind of game when youre up by four or six
than when youre down by 10. Luckily we
controlled the game.
It was a low-scoring first quarter by
Germantown standards, and creating
turnovers on offense early in the game didnt help either. The Warhawks led 12-8
after one period.
Germantown broke a close game open
in the second quarter by hitting three, threepoint shots, with back-to-back conversions
by senior guard Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. and
one by senior guard Brian Studer. Lawhorn

scored eight of Germantowns 11 points in

the quarter. The Warhawks closed out the
half on a 5-0 run to lead at the half 23-15.
We tried to get out and get steals,
Showalter said. We werent very good
offensively in the first half either. We turned
them over a few times and we played pretty good defense. We made way too many
mistakes in the first half. We held them to 15
points. We shouldve had a better lead than
that. They created (slowing the pace
down), that wasnt me.
Kettle Moraine (17-7) scored the first six
points of the second half to cut the
Germantown lead to 23-21. Junior guard
Juwan McCloud, the offensive scoring
machine, struggled in the first half and didnt score. His five points and senior forward
Kyle Theis basket was part of a 7-0 run for
the Warhawks that increased the lead to
30-21 late in the third quarter. The Lasers
got a three-pointer from senior guard
George Schwartz to trail 30-24 entering
the final period.
I just think we adjusted (to KM),
Showalter said. Were telling (our players)
all the time that you have to take the drive
away first. They just spread us out so far
and they were able to beat us off the dribble. Of course, we dont want that to happen. And then we werent scoring on the
other end, so it made it all the more glaring.
The Warhawks 9-2 run in the fourth
quarter gave them a 39-26 lead, their
biggest of the game.
Germantown
outscored Kettle Moraine 16-7 in the final
period of regulation, in part because the
Lasers stopped being aggressive on
offense. Their last basket of the game, a
three by sophomore guard Ben Psicihulis,

The partials I have had since December have been

adjusted and fit good but make my mouth just feel so
uncomfortable some days. The tops make my mouth feel
really full and bulky even though they dont hurt. I have
been a lot happier since I got partials as now I am able to
smile and my lips look fuller so my face doesnt seem to
droop. I am in advertising so having nice teeth and talking
properly is extremely important to me. I want other
alternatives to just regular partials. I'm missing almost all
back teeth except for two, so I have upper and lower partials
currently with the clear clips. Lastly, can you tell me if
insurance will pay for this?
Dear Lisa, I am glad you received partials and are
adapting to them! I refer to partial dentures and dentures as
temporaries in my practice. That is because I want every
patient to have stable teeth, which ideally stay in your
mouth and dont have to be removed at night. While not
everyone is a candidate for fixed implant dentistry it
certainly is a great goal.
When people wear partials-even comfortable partialsmany things happen. First you lose bone where your back
teeth were pulled. The lack of roots in the bone cause the
bone to deteriorate and the movement of the partials adds to
bone loss. Next, you get expansion of the maxillary sinuses.
This is because the roots of the back teeth hold the sinuses
up and when the teeth are removed the sinuses expand in a
process called pneumatization. Lastly, the clasps of partials
move when you chew on the false teeth. This movement is
accentuated on the clasped teeth which often become lose
and need to be removed at a later date.
So the solution is to have dental implants and fixed
bridges. If you have bone loss or the sinuses have expanded
you may require sinus lifts and or bone grafting prior to
placement of implants. Placing implants will stimulate and
preserve bone. Loss of teeth and rubbing on your skin by
partials cause bone loss. So our goal in dentistry is to
preserve bone at all costs! So placing implants before too
much bone loss has occurred will greatly preserve your
options as you age. I lecture to other dentists about
Upgradeable Dentistry, which allows people to go from
dentures to implant supported dentures or even implant
supported bridges as their budget allows. So even though
insurance doesnt cover this level of complex dentistry we

More than half of the students in

Germantown School District elementary
schools have opted out of the Badger
Exams.
The tests are administered to students
statewide in grades 3 to 8. The
Germantown School Board approved a
request Feb. 23 to create a special notice to
parents informing them that they can opt
their children out of the tests.
We are required to provide the tests,
but parents have the ability to opt out,
Superintendent Jeff Holmes said at the Feb.
23 meeting.
District officials have cited the use of a
traditional test style and time taken up
administering the tests in computer labs as
reasons they were opposed to the test.
District officials also questioned if the state
would continue to fund the tests or if they
would rely on local school districts to come
up with their own data in the future.
According to information obtained after
the March 9 School Board meeting, 1,022

students at the four elementary schools and

Kennedy Middle School 59 percent of
students have opted out of the Badger
Exams.
The tests are to be given statewide
between March 30 to May 22. Holmes
added that more students could opt out of
the test prior to the exam being administered. Holmes said that Germantown would
administer the test after students return from
spring break, which will be from April 3-10.
In a question and answer document on
the district website, district officials stated
that tests other than the Badger Exams are
used by the district measure progress.
We also use local assessments to
measure how are students are progressing.
The Germantown School District has a reputation for high academic achievement, and
our commitment to high quality instruction
will continue. We are striving to find better
ways of articulating academic progress
made in Germantown School District, the
district stated. We already know that we

do well in the areas of reading and math as

compared to the State and others; however,
there is much more to a school district than
math and reading scores."
District officials also stated the Badger
Exam will not be used for course placement
decisions.
The district does not plan to use any
data from Badger 3-8 or DLM (Dynamic
Learning Maps) to make decisions about
students. We don't know enough about the
data from the Badger 3-8 to change the
types of data we use to make determinations, about students, especially course
determinations, MAP results are one criteria
point for course placement, along with the
InView testing happening in March, the district stated. These will continue to be used
until we can determine a process that doesn't rely on this information or an alternate set
of criteria is established.

Business owner drops pavilion plan

The owner of the Von Rothenburg Bier
Stube and Old Town Inn announced last
week that he was withdrawing a proposal
for a recreational area just south of the two
businesses.
I am backing out of the Old Town park
project, Chaz Hastings told the
Germantown Plan Commission March 9. It
really hurts me to do this because Ive spent
money on this and I felt we were looking a

project that was going to be great for the

community, truly revitalize Main Street,
bring new business in and really give
Germantown something to be proud of.
The park proposal submitted by
Hastings included a pavilion and two surrounding cabanas for vending, a children's
play area and space for 200 parking spots.
It was the subject of a Jan. 26 workshop
where concepts related to the overall development of the Main Street area were
described.
During the March 9 Plan Commission
meeting, Hastings said he was planning on
spending $1 million on the project.
I cant do that when I feel Im being
asked to do things right out of the gate that
I just dont understand and seem to make no
sense, Hastings said.
Hastings said Village President Dean
Wolter and Trustee David Baum both had
my back and really wanted to see this happen.
Hastings and asked the village do something to address parking issues on Main
Street. He noted that he recently had his first

anniversary party and he knew he lost business because potential customers couldnt
find a place to park.
And I think Main Street will never
become revitalized until the parking issue is
addressed, which unfortunately I was
adding 200 spots, and I feel that would
have fixed it, Hastings said. So again, Im
bowing out on this one.
In response to the announcement,
Wolter said he appreciated the time and
effort Hastings put into the proposal.
Hopefully it can be reconsidered in the
future and its not a totally dead issue and
passed and gone and perhaps we can
reconsider it at another time, Wolter said.
An item on the commission agenda
included discussion of taking steps to develop a master plan for the area. While a document was prepared for the commission to
review, no formal action was taken and it
will be on the agenda for the next commission meeting.
