Primary Injection and In-Situ Testing of

Current Transformers using the
Schneider Electric CT Verification application

This document describes the equipment and procedure required for insitu testing of medium and high voltage current transformers (CTs)
using the CT Verification application from the Schneider Electric
Instrument Transformer Services (ITS) offering.
The following tests are detailed:

Primary Injection Accuracy Test (performed on a deenergized or dead line)

Single Point In-situ Accuracy Test (performed on an

energized or live line)

Dynamic Range In-situ Accuracy Test (performed on an

energized or live line)

The purpose of these tests is to verify accuracy of CTs installed in the

field. This document does not provide detailed instructions on the
performance of these tests. It is assumed that each test is performed
by trained ITS personnel, supplied by Schneider Electric.

Primary Injection Accuracy Test

Schneider Electric supplied equipment:
Primary Injection CT
Heavy current leads
120 VAC Variac
Primary Sensors (one per phase)
Secondary Sensor
GPS antenna for Secondary Sensor
Bluetooth enabled laptop computer
Customer supplied equipment:
Bucket truck or man lift to assist with Primary Sensor
installation
Access to test CT secondary circuit (via split plugs inserted
into test switch terminals)
Access to 120 VAC receptacle in the control room for
powering the secondary sensor
Access to 120 VAC receptacle in the HV yard to power
Variac/Injection CT
Method:
1. Place the Secondary Sensor in the Control Room.
2. Connect the Secondary Sensor current inputs into the MOCT
current output circuit using split plugs inserted into the
existing CT Test Switch.
3. Apply 120 VAC power to the Secondary Sensor.
4. Configure the Secondary Sensor using the laptop computer.
5. De-energize and ground the section of primary conductor with
the test CT.
6. Install one Primary Sensor on each of the high voltage phase
conductors. You must install the Primary Sensors where they
will register the same current as seen by the CT under test.
7. Configure the Primary Sensors using the laptop computer.
8. Connect the equipment as shown in the diagram (below).
9. While monitoring and recording the data from both Primary
and Secondary Sensors, use the Variac to slowly increase the
injected primary current from the Injection CT. The system
software records the ratio and phase errors across the current
range.
10. Process the data and provide a report.

Single Point In-situ Accuracy Test

Schneider Electric supplied equipment:
Primary Sensors (one per phase)
Secondary Sensor (one unit supports three phases)
GPS antenna for Secondary Sensor
Bluetooth capable laptop computer
Customer supplied equipment:
Bucket truck or man lift to assist with Primary Sensor
installation
Access to test CT secondary circuit (via split plugs inserted
into test switch terminals)
Access to 120 VAC receptacle in the control room for
powering the secondary sensor
Method:
1. Switch off and remove the Injection Current Transformer, heavy
current leads and 120 VAC Variac.
2. Remove the protective grounds.
3. Energize the primary conductor.
4. Record the CT accuracy at the present load current and compare
to the Injection Test results to check accuracy at voltage.

Dynamic Range In-situ Accuracy Test

Schneider Electric Supplied Equipment:
As for In-situ Accuracy Test (above)
Method:
1. Configure each of the sensors to perform onboard logging.
2. Leave the system to gather data for as long as is necessary to
experience an acceptable current range. In order to test the CT
over as wide a dynamic range as possible, the system is left in
place to gather data while the load current either varies naturally
or is adjusted by System Control by switching or changing load
or generation. Testing duration therefore depends on how long it
takes to obtain a wide enough primary current variation.
3. Once enough data is captured, download the data from the
sensors to the laptop computer.
4. Removal of the Primary Sensor can be performed live.
