Samhitha is known us PRAKRITHI because it is self evident, it has been handed
down by RISHIS, it is the breath of Eswara and it has not been composed by any human
being.
The Vikritis, derivatives, are five in number. They are Pada, Karma, Jata. Ghana
and Varnakrama, familiar to the adherents of the Taittiriya Sakha of the Krishna
Yajurveda.
Though the derivatives Pada, Krama, Jata and Ghana have been learnt at the
time of studentship, the congregational recitation (paaraayanam) of only the two
derivatives Krama and Ghana have been in vogue all the time. It is well known that
under divine Orders of His Holiness Jagadguru Paramahamsa, Parivrajakacharya,
Chandrasekharendra Sarasawathi Mahaswamigal, Jagadguru His Holiness Sri

Jayendra Saraswathi Periyava and Sri Bala Periyava of Sri Kanchikamakodi peetam
have continuously strived against great odds to perpetuate our most valuable heritage
of Vedas through, among several other initiatives, convening recitation, parayana, of
the Vikritis Jata and Ghana.
Given the great difficulties involved in mastering and perpetuating
Varnakramapatha Sri Kanchi Guru Parampara Acharyas are through consistent hard
work ensured nurturing of exceptionally trained Vedic Pandits well versed in
Varnakramapatha over last several decades. The entire humanity now benefits from
the fruits of the efforts of our great Acharyas from hundreds of these highly trained Vedic
Scholars proficient in the recitation of Varnakrama. At this auspicious hour the memory
of the Paramacharyas unparalleled sacrifices to nurture Vedas touches the bottom of
our hearts. It deserves special mention here that Sri Mahaperiyava honoured those who
have mastered the Varnakrama with golden bangles, as was the custom.
In this context, we recollect a verse from "Skaanda Puranam", that extols the
fruits accruing from Varnakramapatha :

This sloka means that Lord Siva in the guise of Lord Nataraja, with a view to
teach Sanaka and other celebrated sages, the path leading to everlasting bliss, beat his
Damaruka fourteen times resulting in the emergence of fourteen aphorisms in the form
of aggregate of letters (articulate sounds). These aphorisms are known as the gift of
Maheswara; Siva. They include all the letters in the Varnamala (alphabet) of the Sanskrit
Language.
Because the Varnas emerged out of Lord Sivakama Sundari sametha Lord
Natarajas damarukam, by the Divine Grace of Lord Sivakama Sundari sametha Lord
Nataraja 16 most respected and highly trained Vaidhikas will adore him. Just as one
worships the ocean with water drawn from the same ocean, these most respected and
highly trained Vaidhikas will adore Lord Sivakama Sundari sametha Lord Nataraja with
the same Varnas adorned with the eight inherent qualities given to us by the same Lord.
c
By Lord Shivas infinite Grace, these most respected VaidhJkas determined that
the most fitting homage to Lord Parameshwara who manifests Himself as the entire
Universe will be through the Varnakarama recitation of the Rudhraadhyaya (famous in
all the sakhas of Yajurveda, consisting of 1234 words or 6387 letters) which glorifies the
infinite manifestations of Lord Parameshwara.
With the Divine Blessings of the Jagadguru Paramacharya, embodiment of
compassion, we the performers of the Varnakrama Parayanam offer the Upahara of
Varnakrama Parayana, rendered strictly in line with the rules specified in the Sastras, to
Lord Sivakama Sundari sametha Lord Nataraja, the lord of the Universe and we consider
ourselves really fortunate by making this sacred task a reality.
