NEBOSH wins Queens Award

for international trade success

NEBOSH has won the Queens Award

for Enterprise 2014 for its outstanding
achievement in international trade.
The Award recognises our international growth over the three
years to the end of March 2013. In that time our overseas
registrations more than tripled.
The Awards are announced annually each year on the Queens
birthday (21 April) to celebrate and encourage excellence in
UK business.
NEBOSH has a worldwide focus with our vision being to
preserve and improve health, safety and the environment
in workplaces worldwide.
Our range of qualifications, from introductory level to degree
equivalent diplomas, are now taken in more than 110 different
countries throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa, the Americas,
Australasia and Europe.
Health and safety is an export that Britain should be proud of,
said NEBOSH Chair, Sir Bill Callaghan. It saves lives, prevents
serious injuries and protects peoples health in workplaces
throughout the world.

www.nebosh.org.uk

NEBOSHs international growth has been significant in recent

years. 10 years ago, only around 5% of NEBOSH examinations
were taken outside of the UK. By the end of 2013, well over
60% of all exams were taken by people overseas. This growth
has been helped by the development of our international
qualifications, which focus on international health and safety
standards and practice rather than on UK specific legislation.
The ability to study for and sit NEBOSH examinations in a
range of languages other than English has also helped.
British educational standards have often been admired and
followed in other countries, said NEBOSH Chief Executive, Teresa
Budworth. This is something we have sought to uphold through
our vocational qualifications, which have a strong reputation and
are seen as a thorough test of health, safety and environmental
knowledge and its practical application.
This has paid dividends for us, and has led to incredible
international growth in recent years. We are humbled and
proud to have been recognised for our contribution to Britains
international success by this Queens Award for Enterprise.

Its valuable work, whether

its scrubs or suit
CASE STUDY: Jo-Anne Baur

Jo-Anne Baur protects peoples lives in two

very different ways. One way youd expect
of someone with a NEBOSH qualification,
the other less so.
Jo, as shes known to her friends and colleagues, is a Health and
Safety Co-ordinator at the Nuffield Health Hospital in Brentwood,
Essex. She took on the role a few years ago when a colleague retired.
Jo had a bit of experience of health and safety from a previous job
at a Day Centre, working with people with learning disabilities. Shed
been sent on a basic trade union health and safety course after
expressing an interest or opening her big mouth as she puts it.
However, health and safety is not all that Jo does at the hospital.
She is also an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP). An ODP
works in operating theatres and as Jo explains, with a grin: Our
predominant role is to assist in putting people to sleep, and then
if theyre good we wake them up again.
Around 12 years ago, and following a brief spell as an auxiliary
nurse, Jo began her two year course to qualify as an ODP. As well
as gaining experience in theatre, Jo trained in Accident and
Emergency and Intensive Care Units, to not only assist consultant
surgeons, but to learn about things like airway management.
So my working week these days sees me wearing two different
uniforms, says Jo. One is my ODP theatre scrubs, while the other
is my health and safety suit.

Nuffield Health is keen to maintain high health and safety standards.

In fact it has introduced a policy requiring its health and safety
personnel to gain at least a NEBOSH National General Certificate
in Occupational Health and Safety. Nuffield Health is also
accredited to deliver the NEBOSH National General Certificate
courses in-house to its employees. Jo, together with several of her
colleagues from other hospitals around the country, passed her
NEBOSH National General Certificate at the beginning of this year.
She says the qualification helped her greatly with legal aspects,
but more than that it gave her more confidence.
People recognise NEBOSH. Weve been having refurbishment
work done recently and Ive had to clamp down a bit on some of
the contractors. The NEBOSH National General Certificate has
given me so much more confidence and clout to be honest.
Jo is proud of both her ODP and health and safety roles. She
appreciates the immense value of protecting people from harm. She
has seen first hand the impact accidents can have. Jo has worked
in busy burns units and has also travelled to India twice to support
charities such as the Smile Train and Sylvia Wright Trust. This year,
she travelled to Bangladesh with a consultant colleague and theatre
nurse to work in A&E and help out with operations.
Everywhere I go I see just how critical health and safety is, she
told us. Simple failures can have devastating impacts and its vital
people everywhere understand and appreciate its importance.
Well said, Jo. Keep up the good work.

NEBOSH globally recognised safety, health and environmental qualifications

New entry-level environmental

qualification hitting the spot

A brand new qualification from NEBOSH is

already proving to be an excellent way for
companies to improve employee awareness
of environmental impacts and risk controls.

Anna, who has a degree in Agri-Food, Marketing and Business

Studies, told us: Its an ideal first step. I think its given everyone
a good understanding of how everything fits together and you
can easily relate it to your role. It certainly improves general
awareness and can be taken by employees at all levels.

The NEBOSH Environmental Awareness at Work qualification is

suitable for all industry sectors and has been specifically designed
to improve environmental awareness among the general workforce.

HS&E Coordinator Greg McCannon added: NEBOSH sits right at the

top of the pile for qualifications. They are really good quality. The idea
behind the NEBOSH Environmental Awareness at Work qualification
was to get people to understand their impacts, particularly with
energy usage, our packaging materials, waste and so on.

Research shows that employers are finding the introductory level

qualification useful in supporting their Environmental Management
Systems (EMS), such as ISO 14001.
Recently, food ingredients manufacturer ADM Cocoa UK was
one of the first to put a number of its workforce through a course
leading to the NEBOSH Environmental Awareness at Work
qualification. At its plant near Liverpool, ADM Cocoa UK has
already developed an effective Environmental Management
System, which in 2013 led to ISO 14001 Certification.
ADM Cocoa UK recognises that people are hugely important when
it comes to delivering continuous environmental improvement.
Often, its when employees understand environmental impacts
and what they can do about them, that the biggest changes
occur, explained the plants HS&E Coordinator Greg McCannon.

Weve immediately seen that our employees are being more

proactive. Theyre also coming forward with ideas of their own.
Altogether, its proving very positive and given everyone a more
structured approach.
The one-day pilot qualification is assessed through multiple-choice
and provides a progression route on to the more established
NEBOSH Certificate and Diploma level environmental management
qualifications.
For more information on the NEBOSH Environmental
Awareness at Work (EAW) qualification, visit:
www.nebosh.org.uk/EAW

Altogether, nine employees ranging from food hygienists to

production staff took part in the ADM Cocoa UK course run
by Environmental Monitoring Solutions. All passed, including
Food Safety Manager Anna Ollier.

NEBOSH suits us better

says Norland
However Steve is quick to tell us that QHSE is not just a priority.
For Steve, the word priority is not enough, he says QHSE is at
the core of everything we do. Norland, who are certificated to
four International standards have also won the RoSPA Gold Award
for 6 years running at Group level.
In practical terms this means investing (both time and money)
in training courses for staff to make sure they have the right skills
and knowledge. Feedback from our teams, and customers, is an
important part of our checks to ensure the training is satisfactory
and continues to fulfil its purpose.
The company has changed its approach to health and safety
training in the last few years. Steve continues We identified areas
within training that could be improved and worked with NEBOSH
course provider Safety Boss to discuss a range of qualifications.
Rather than just selling us something, they took time to understand
what we do, how we do it, and what had made us so successful.
We liked this approach as its the way we do things with our
customers.

Norland, the engineering hard services led

facilities management provider, has an
essential characteristic often seen in many
highly successful organisations: They listen.
Continual improvement through a focus on exceptional service
and exceptional people is something thats served them extremely
well, demonstrated through customer retention levels of over 93%
and year on year growth of over 20% for more than a decade.
Steve Booker (pictured above), Group Director for Quality,
Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) at Norland explains:
Delivering success requires a truly integrated approach to
business. Understanding the customers needs is critical, as is
attracting and retaining the best talent. We invest significantly
in our people through our training which delivers tailored
solutions to enhance competence and focusses heavily on
behaviours and culture.
We concentrate on ensuring our people have a robust
understanding of risk awareness and risk management. We
provide the training, tools and ongoing specialist support to
ensure our people on the ground, who are customer facing,
have the competence to deliver an exceptional service.

Norland decided to adopt NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work

as a mandatory foundation qualification for a large number of its
employees. For example, their risk champions who are customer
facing employees, have a responsibility to promote positive QHSE
messages and champion QHSE innovations throughout its 4,000
strong workforce; and additionally the course applies to Norlands
managers and supervisors. Norland like this qualification because
the course has sufficient flexibility to be tailored to the way we do
things whilst providing a foundation for future NEBOSH qualifications.
Steve added: The way we structured its delivery has resulted in
savings in both time and money. Additionally, it has generated
greater enthusiasm for being involved in risk management which
is a significant added value.
Risk Management qualifications are mandatory for employees at
Norland. NEBOSH is a good example; those involved in project
management activities must hold NEBOSH Construction
Certificate, and Area General Managers attain NEBOSH General
Certificate. Steve told us the NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work
was the perfect forerunner to these higher level qualifications

"The Norland strategy is underpinned by a real focus on behaviour

and culture, and, uniquely, Norland people are empowered to
make decisions; providing customers with an accessible and
responsive team.

What could be better than holding

a NEBOSH qualification? Holding
another one perhaps?
At NEBOSH we are always looking for ways to help students take
better advantage of the qualifications they hold. A good example
of this is the recent changes we have made to the structure of two
of our most popular Certificates:
N
EBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational
Health and Safety
N
EBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational
Health and Safety
The changes make it easier for holders of one of these
qualifications to gain the other; because the elements of the
syllabuses that are now common (Units GC2 and GC3) do not
need to be taken twice.

NEBOSH International Certificate

in Fire Safety and Risk Management
(IGC1, IFC1, FC2)

The key differences between these two qualifications are that the
national version includes UK specific legislation (Unit NGC1), whilst
the international version focuses on international health and safety
standards and practice (Unit IGC1). Having units that are common
to qualifications means that you can gain additional qualifications
by only taking one additional unit.*
The diagram above, shows these common units visually and also
illustrates how our Fire and Constructions certificate qualifications
share units with the NEBOSH General Certificates.*

NEBOSH 2014 Jobs Barometer

This years NEBOSH Jobs Barometer* revealed that some form of
NEBOSH health and safety qualification and/or Technician Member
of IOSH or higher was specified in 88% of jobs.
Last year, slightly more than a third of all job adverts for health
and safety management roles called for applicants to hold our
Diploma. This year, this has risen to almost half at 48%.
NEBOSH Chief Executive Teresa Budworth commented I believe
employers now see health and safety management as more of a
strategic role. Professional level qualifications and status are
therefore being demanded as a result.

The average top-end salary advertised was 42,000 per annum,

down slightly from 46,000 in 2013. The average top-end salary
for jobs where a NEBOSH Diploma and CMIOSH were specified
was higher at 52,000 per annum. More than half (57%) of the
vacancies were in London and the South East, with 26% in the
Midlands and North West and the remainder spread throughout
the UK.
*Between 11 February and 20 March 2014, NEBOSH examined one hundred
nationally advertised jobs for health and safety managers and advisers.
