FREEDOM FROM SIN

(Romans 6:1-23)

I. Introduction
A. This section of the book of Romans is concerned with the WAY OF
HOLINESS (Romans 6:1-8:39)
B. Note the OUTLINE already examined:
1. ALL MEN ARE SINNERS

(Romans 1:1-3:20)

2. Jesus is the SOLUTION to the problem of SIN (Romans 3:21-5:21)

C. Now, Paul will answer an OBJECTION, and REMIND the Roman
Christians CONCERNING HOW THEY BECAME CHRISTIANS and
the LIFE OF HOLINESS THEY MUST LIVE! They have received
FREEDOM FROM SIN (Romans 6:1-23).
II. A SUPPOSED OBJECTION that would be raised

(Romans 6:1, 2).

A. The objector would say, If, when man sins, God pours forth His GRACE
so that sin can be FORGIVEN, LET US DO MORE SINNING so that
God will give us MORE GRACE (Romans 5:20, 21)
B. Where sin increased, grace increased all the more

(Romans 5:20).

C. NO! Shall we continue in sin, so that Gods GRACE may increase?

NO, THIS CANNOT BE! (Romans 6:1, 2).
D. REASONS WHY THIS CANNOT BE:
1. God has always DESIRED HOLINESS OF LIFE IN HIS PEOPLE!
2. When man becomes a Christian, HE MUST DIE TO SIN
3. Man MUST NOT DO EVIL SO THAT GOOD MAY COME!
(Romans 3:8)
4. There is a completely New Nature developed by the Christian
(Colossians 2:11-3:4; Ephesians 4:20-32; II Corinthians 5:17).
III. HOW THE ROMANS BECAME CHRISTIANS

(Romans 6:1-4).

A. They had DIED TO THEIR OLD LIFE OF SIN

(Romans 6:1, 2)

1. See also Colossians 3:1-4. The OLD LIFE is GONE!

2. The Old Things have passed away

(II Corinthians 5:17).

3. NOTE that this is the REPENTANT LIFE

(Acts 2:38)

B. They had been Baptized Into Christ and Baptized Into His Death.
They had entered into UNION with Christ, and had entered His
DEATH with all that His death signified. See Galatians 3:26, 27.
C. Following the DEATH had come the BURIAL in BAPTISM!
See also Colossians 2:12.
D. They had been RAISED to WALK A NEW LIFE. This is a LIFE of
HOLINESS! Note below.
E. NOTE THE PARALLEL in Acts 2:36-41 and Acts 22:1-16. There must
be a DEATH, BURIAL, and RESURRECTION!
IV. Freedom From Sin Demands HOLINESS of LIFE
A. The Old Man is Crucified with Him
Galatians 6:14).

(Romans 6:5-23).

(Romans 6:5, 6; Galatians 2:20;

B. The one who DIES to his old life is FREE FROM SIN! He is no longer
a slave of sin (Romans 6:6, 7).
C. Jesus was RAISED and death no longer has mastery over Him. Christians
must DIE TO SIN and SIN will no longer have mastery over them
(Romans 6:8-11).
D. Christians must be DEAD TO SIN but ALIVE TO GOD (Romans 6:
11-14). Sin is not the master under Gods system of Grace! Grace breaks
the mastery of sin, which the law could not do.
E. The SLAVE MARKET Analogy

(Romans 6:15-23)

1. When the SLAVE is dead, the master CANNOT CONTROL him

2. Christians had been SLAVES to SIN, but NOW they are SLAVES
OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (Romans 6:16-18).
3. They OBEYED from the HEART that PATTERN OF TEACHING
delivered to them (Romans 6:17-18). The great deposit of
TRUTH preached to them.
4. As slaves of righteousness, we CANNOT Love God and do as
we please
5. Those who are JUSTIFIED are now being SANCTIFIED, made
HOLY. This is the subject of this section of Romans. LIVE A

LIFE OF HOLINESS!

(Romans 6:22).

6. The wages paid by SIN is DEATH, but, through GRACE, God

GIVES ETERNAL LIFE! (Romans 6:23).
