HISTORY OF THE EARLY CHURCH FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS

Lesson 7 --- The First Missionary Journey of Paul (And Barnabas)


(Acts 13, 14)

I. The Selection of the Workers to go on this JOURNEY

(Acts 13:1-3)

1. Barnabas had gone to Antioch to help the brethren there (Acts 11:22-24)
2. He went to Tarsus to find Saul (Paul)
(Acts 11:25, 26)
3. The church at Antioch sent help to Judea during the famine
(Acts 11:27-30)
4. NOTE:

Paul and Barnabas were two of the prophets at Antioch


(Acts 13:1)
5. The Holy Spirit selected Barnabas and Saul for missionary work (Acts 13:2)
6. The church at Antioch fasted and prayed
(Acts 13:3)
7. They laid their hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them away
NOTE: Laying on hands was to commission them to their work.
They were already prophets. This laying on of hands here was not
to give them the miraculous gift of the Spirit as in other places.
II. The Work on the Island of CYPRUS

John Mark was their helper

They traveled across the island to Paphos (13:6)
There, a sorcerer named Elymas or Bar-Jesus opposed them while Sergius Paulus
was being taught

By the Power of God, Elymas was BLINDED for a period of time

5. The Proconsul, ruler on the island, Sergius Paulus, became a believer


III. Preaching in the City of ANTIOCH of PISIDIA in Asia Minor
1. John Mark returned to Jerusalem

2. Paul preached in the synagogue of the Jews in Antioch

From David, God raised up a SAVIOR, JESUS!

The rulers and people in Jerusalem killed Jesus (See 13:26-29)
BUT, GOD RAISED HIM!

Forgiveness of sins comes through HIM! Believe on Him!

4. They were invited to speak again the next Sabbath


(Acts 13:42, 43)
5. There was such interest that the Jews became jealous, stirred up opposition to
Paul and Barnabas, and they were EXPELLED from the city
(13:44-50)

IV. Preaching the Gospel in ICONIUM, LYSTRA, and DERBE

(Acts 13:51-14:28)

1. Paul and Barnabas preached in the synagogue again


(Acts 14:1)
2. A great number of both Jews and Gentiles believed
(14:1)
3. However, the unbelieving Jews opposed them, plotted against them and wanted to
stone them
(14:5)
4. Therefore, they left Iconium and went on to LYSTRA and DERBE to preach
(14:6, 7)
5. In Lystra, a crippled man, lame from birth, was HEALED
(14:8-10)
6. The people considered them to be gods --- they mistakenly considered Paul to be
ZEUS and Barnabas to be HERMES
(14:11-13)
7. Paul and Barnabas REFUSED THE WORSHIP of these people
(14:14-19)
They said, We too are only men, human like you.
8. Unbelieving Jews from Antioch and Iconium turned the people against Paul and
Barnabas. PAUL WAS STONED, but did not die
(14:19, 20)
9. They went on to DERBE where a large number became disciples

(14:21)

10. They returned through Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch to strengthen the disciples
(Acts 14:22)
11. NOTE:

ELDERS WERE APPOINTED IN EVERY CHURCH

(14:23)

a. Note that there was a PLURALITY of elders in each congregation!


b. There are THREE WORDS used to describe these men:
(1) Elders
(See Acts 20:17)
(2) Bishops or overseers
(See Acts 20:28 and Philippians 1:1)
(3) Pastors or shepherds The phrase be shepherds in Acts
20:28 is the same as pastor and refers to ELDERS of the
church.
c. Also, please note the same words used in I Peter 5:1-5
d. The word pastor DOES NOT refer to a preacher, but to an ELDER
12. Paul and Barnabas journeyed back to Antioch of Syria

(14:24-26)

13. They gathered the church together in Antioch and rehearsed all THAT THE
LORD HAD DONE THROUGH THEM, and how a door of faith had been
opened to teach the Gentile people
(14:27)
