THE WILL an Essay; la force sotrique of

the man
and the Universal Will or the Logos of the Greeks

"There is no form of mental activity so universal in its visible

manifestations as that which we call the Will. And, likewise, there is
none so generally misunderstood and so little understood as the Will." William Walker Atkinson
THAT which turns the man from 'reactive-machine' into human, in the
proper and dignified sense of the word, is "the Will" which, along three
different stages of course, manifests all the actions of the human being.
While at first it seems reasonable to associate the functions of the will with the
human mind, it become soon clear that the will is a separate force which,
nevertheless, may and does use the mind to lay out its functions, be them as
called 'willed' or 'conscious' functions or 'accidental' or 'unconscious' functions.
As it was mentioned, the will manifests its functions along three stages, though
the second one of these stages is usually 'skipped past' so quickly as not to
manifest in the conscious mind of the human being.

These three stages can be classified thus:

1. The First Stage of Desire, or the Desire-Will.

2. The Second Stage of Decision, or the Decisive-Will.
3. The Third and the Final Stage of Acting, or the Active-Will
In the first of these three stages happens the desiring of some thing or course
of action; indeed, in the first the stage the human being with his Will 'desires'
to "have some thing" - be it something material as 'money' or something
abstract as 'fame' - or desires to "do some thing", usually along the two lines of
action of "approach-or-retreat."
Before the Will can manifest any sort of decision or pursuit of some concrete or
abstract 'thing-of-desire', his Will must be aroused by some sort of desire .
The desire which arouses the Will to pursuit some course of action is not
necessarily positive; indeed, the man can be complied to pursuit some course
of action he might not enjoy. An example of this type of "negative desire" might

be an old and tired worker who will soon retire from his job. He might not have
any sort of interest to do his last bits of his job, but, in hope of achieving
enough money to retire to some nicer place, he continues his work; indeed, the
Will can be aroused by both positive and negative desires, but only positive
desire can guarantee success in the third and the final stage, in the stage of
"acting upon one's will until the desire is satisfied."
In the second stage happens the decisive-action; the "choosing between one
and another desire; this because the human being is full of contradictions; he
desires this and its opposite; he wants to do and he wants to not-do; he wants
and he does not want.
In this stage the man weighs his contradictive desires with his mind - the Will
asks the Mind to help in the decision and, after decising what he wants the
most, he ignores his other desires and decides to satisfy this desire in the third
stage.
As said, sometimes the second stage is as if "skipped", the Will not having the
time to contact the Mind. However, the Will always contacts the Mind but
sometimes, instead of the conscious and rational mind, the irrational
subconscious might be contacted, who, in haste to satisfy the strongest
(but not always the best) desire, commands the Will to pursuit the desire
without proper calculation and weighing. This explains the many ashaming and
irrational actions done by men, who have nothing else to say but, "I just found
myself doing it".
Nevertheless, in the third and final stage of willing happens the actual pursuit
of some course of action. In this stage the Will tries to accomplish and satisfy
the requisites set by the chosen desire. In the first stage some desire became
known; the "want-to" emerged from the depths of man's being; and in the
second happened the weighing of desires; "Do I want this or that the most?
What is it to me? Am I ready to pay the price?; and in the third stages happens
the actual motion to "achieve the want-to" and satisfy the desire.
However, it happens to the man in his stage of being a reactive-machine; a
broken being under the spell of outer influences; that the desire dies out in the
third stage before the goal is actualized or achieved. This often happens
because his current desire is overthrown by another desire, the current desire
not managing to arouse the Will for long enough, or because of the weakness
of the Will. In this manner, the active pursuit of the "want-to" is aborted, and
"the ship changes its course".
This often happens to people who, having made a grandiose plan, suddenly
quit fulfilling the plan, having overcome by negative emotions, such as fearthoughts, or by having the desire overcome by another, or by the sheer
weakness of the Will.
To manifest the Will the human needs to stop being a reactive-machine; he
needs to stop letting outer influences affect him; he needs to achive "a centre
of power"; and what both these are achieved by finding the ' I AMconsciousness' within and developing it. Only an individual, in the real sense
of that word, (the Individual having a permanent center of personality, which is

immune to outer influences), can manifest the Will with guaranteed success;
everyone else, who are still reactive-machines, are under the Law of Chance
and by chance only do they achieve or don't achieve anything; "by chance did
their desire come, by chance will it or will not manifest"; the Law of Chance
rules the Outer Man, the man who is influenced by everything but himself. Only
the Individual escapes the Law of Chance. But enough of this!

"It is by the Will alone the Man sets himself in Action and Motion."
Through the three stages of 1). the Desire-Will, or "desiring to have or to-do",
2). the Decisive-Will, or "weighing the to-wants and to-dos", and 3). the ActiveWill, or "pursuing the desire until its satisfaction", through these three stages
happens all the actions of the human being, but only the Individual can
manifest the Will with guaranteed success.
