B.

Tech Projects Policy


We are living in a new economy powered by technology, fueled by information and driven by knowledge.

Preamble
The old School model of passive learning is no longer sufficient to prepare students for
surviving in todays competitive and hi-tech environment. Solving highly complex
problems requires that students have strong conceptual foundation complemented by
21st Century Skills (critical thinking, creativity, team work, problem solving, time
management, information synthesizing and utilizing hi-tech tools etc.).

combination of skills, students become managers of their own learning process, guided
and mentored by a skilled teacher. The aim of B.Tech projects is to promote project
based learning in students.
1. Introduction
Project Work is a partial requirement for successful completion of a B.Tech Program.
These guidelines will facilitate various departments to conduct projects effectively and
uniformly. It is expected that these guidelines will help in overall improvement in
quality of B.Tech projects along with improvement in the evaluation process. B.Tech
projects can be of two types: projects based on implementation of any application
oriented problem which will be more or less experimental in nature, and others will be
based on some innovative/theoretical work.

The project work undertaken by the

students of VI and VII semesters shall facilitate the following:


(a) Opportunity for application of technical knowledge gained by students during their
course of study,

(b) Opportunity for experimenting with new ideas, new designs and innovation
(c) The project work may lead to developing new products, modification of existing
products to improve efficiency and output etc.
(d) Scope for obtaining patents, IPR and publication of research work etc.
(e) To develop technical/scientific writing skills
2. Departmental Project Committees
A committee of three senior faculty including Head of the Department shall be
appointed each academic year to oversee selection, approval, monitoring of projects.
Selection. The committee would strive its best to ensure quality of the projects to
showcase high quality of technical education imparted at the university and further it
should lead to branding of the university.

The departmental committees are

responsible for organizing display of the projects at the end of each semester.
3. Project Supervisors
Each project activity must be supervised by a faculty member of the
department/school. These faculty members are termed as Supervisors. The role of the
supervisor is given below:
(1) To continuously monitor the progress of the project groups. In case it is found
that progress is unsatisfactory it should be reported to their HoD for necessary
action.
(2) The supervisor should continuously guide their project group students and help to
solve their problems.
(3) The supervisor should ensure that the Project Report is prepared and submitted
in the desired format.
4. Formation of Project Groups
Each B.Tech project may be carried out by a group of students of that
department/school. In order to ensure participation of each student, the group size
may range from 3 to 8 Students (depending on the size). Formation of project groups

may be done such that each group has representation of students with varying
academic merit from best to average.
5. Allotment and Final Approval of Projects:

After forming a group, the students will approach a faculty of the department to discuss
their project proposal. Once the group of students and the faculty agree upon a project,
the project proposal shall be submitted to the HoD within 15 days of commencement
of classes of semester in which Project Stage I is prescribed.
The HoD will arrange a presentation of the project proposal before the Departmental
Project Committee (DPC).

The DPC after going through the technicalities and

feasibility (both time and cost constraints) may accept the proposal/ may suggest
changes or may reject the proposal. Approval of DPC is mandatory.
6.

Financial Assistance for projects


A number of financial assistance schemes by Department of Science and Technology,
Government of Rajasthan is available. In the past, students of Gyan Vihar University
have availed funding for their projects. In order to complete the projects successfully
on time, the project supervisors may approach Government agencies and other agencies
which promote and support innovation for financial assistance and the university will
encourage and support all such endeavours.

7. Conduct and Evaluation Procedure


To ensure proper conduction and achievement of high standard of projects, progress of
each project may be monitored on continuous basis. In order to do so, each project

group may be required to give minimum 3 presentations in each semester on the


following occasions:
(1)

Project Stage I (Continuous Internal Evaluation)

(a) First presentation:- The first presentation may be purely synopsis based to be

made before the committee consisting of supervisor(s) and HoD of the department
within one month of the commencement of classes of the semester in which it is

prescribed. In the presentation the students may be required to show a brief power
point presentation describing the Aim/Objective of the project, the methodology
to be used, the PERT chart and the reference in 10-15 slides.
The project may be considered to be approved only if it is passed in this
presentation. If the presentation is not up to the mark either the committee may
ask the students to modify the project slightly within a weak or change the project.
In case the project is approved, marks may be awarded in following manner:

(b) Second Presentation: - The second presentation may be planned by the


committee after about 45 days from the first presentation/approval of the project
of the students. The presentation may review the progress of the students and
clearly state agenda for the future work month in their presentation. In this

(c) Consolidation of Continuous Internal Evaluation Awards:-Just after second


presentation the award of Continuous Internal Evaluation may be finalized by
the Supervisor in consultation with their HoD in the following manner:

(d)End Semester Examination (Final Presentation):-Each group may be required


to make a project report showing the complete six month progress of the project.
This report may be brief (Spiral bound) and should contain the detailed
methodology/algorithms adopted/studied during the entire semester and should
clearly State the agenda for the next semester (by means of PERT Chart).This
report may be signed by the supervisor and should be submitted to the
department/school at least three days before the final presentation. The groups
are required to make a power point presentation before the Exam Committee
in not more than 15-20 slides . The final exam committee may mark each
student/group in the following manner:

(2) Project Stage-II


In the next semester again there may be three presentations by the project
groups to be announced by the HoD. First two presentations may be internal
presentation and third presentation may be Final External Presentation. Each
project group has to prepare the Project Report (Hard Bound) and to submit it
to the department duly certified by the

Supervisor at least one week

before the final external presentation. This report has to be prepared based on
the format enclosed in Appendix A. The project groups may be evaluated in
the same manner as they were evaluated during Project Stage-I.

6. Examination Committees:
(1) The Continuous Internal Evaluation (60% Component) of project Stage I and
II may be assessed by the concerned supervisors in consultation with their HoD
on the basis of first and second internal presentations during each semester and
their regularity/weekly progress and attendance record.
(2) The End Semester Examination based on third/final presentation may be
conducted by a committee consisting of the following officers:
(a)
