Course Outline
Biology and Technology: What have we learned?

The morning presentations will include an overview of the principles of facial

growth and development as foundational knowledge for orthodontic
treatment planning and outcomes assessment. Clinical case reports as well
as population-based studies will be used to illustrate these principles. The
afternoon will concentrate on what has been learned from CBCT about the
biological response of the bones of the facial complex to orthodontic
treatment.
The following topics will be covered:
1. The use of normative data in the diagnosis of transverse deficiency;
2. The effect of rapid palatal expansion on bone volume;

3. The effect of lower incisor angulation on labial bone support;

4. The relationship between crown and root alignment;

5. The effect of mandibular advancement on oropharyngeal airway volume.

6. The relationship of root surface area compared to root length. The use of
these studies to challenge or support current orthodontic dogma will be
discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Understand normal facial growth and development

Understand methods of outcome assessment in orthodontics

Know the normal buccal-lingual angulations of the upper and lower first
molars.

Understand how to use these norms for differential diagnosis of

transverse deficiency.

Understand how bone thickness and density are measured on CBCT

images of the human face.
Understand the clinical importance of root length compared to root
surface area.
