REFLECTION REPORT (FIRST LECTURE)

NAME: ALVIANNA ANTHONY

CLASS: PISMP 2B

First of all, I want to thank to God for giving me chance to study this course. Principles of
English Language Teaching even though TESL is not my major Course. Honestly saying, I once
dislike this kind of subject which is using English Language is a must if anyone wants to talk or
giving opinion during class. My speaking ability using English Language was very bad back then
and it made me shutting myself off whenever it comes to English subject or speaking English. I
think it was the main reason of why I cannot improve my speaking skill and vocabulary. Then
one day I realized what have I learned throughout those so many years because after so many
years of learning English, I still so weak in English. When there is a desire, there will be a way
is a simple quote that has turned my perspective 180 degree. I started using simple English
sentences during conversation with people around me, reading English books, watching English
movies and a lot more. Finally, all the efforts are worth it. Even until now I am still not really good
in English, but at least I have improved and I am still learning.
That is why I love it when I know that our elective course is English. I am so grateful
because I have the chance to learn more and importantly I am learning this as one of my
preparation to become a future great teacher. Back to the point of this reflection report, at first I
do not even have any idea on what is this Principles of English Language Teaching about and I
even had searched information about this course from the internet. After the first lecture, I get to
know more about this course and my first thought after the lecture was woah, this course surely
going to make me a better teacher.
Talking about the first lecture, because this is the reflection report for our first lecture, we
started with a long briefing from our lecturers about this course and I understand why they gave
us that long briefing. It was because they want us not to be afraid of this course because I know
that some of my classmates were terrified and afraid if they will fail the course again. I wish all
the best for everyone. Honestly saying, every words that come out from them really get into me
so deeply. The lecturers do more than teaching us, they always motivate us to improve
ourselves. I really appreciate it with all my heart. Back to the long briefing that I had mention
earlier, I get to know that this course is preparing us before we going to be a teacher for real one
fine day. Theories, philosophies, teaching skills and a lot more things we will learn by heart
throughout this semester. Even some of the topics seem like it going to be rough somewhere on

the road, I always remind myself that things will be back in place and I am strong enough to do
it.
The first chapter of the book English Language Teaching Methodology: Principles and
practice is all about Language Learning and Teaching. In that 13 pages, I know even more and
what really had caught my attention is the subtopic of How Do Pupils Learn a Language?. The
subtopic is actually discussing about the theories that have been used by and educators since
many years ago until now to teach pupils especially in teaching a language.
The behaviourism theory is about repetition, teacher-centredness, reinforcement and so
on. While cognitivism theory is a theory that is about focusing on students analyzing ability
because in this theory, teacher will let the students to discover new things and makes students
think out of the box. Meanwhile, the last theory is humanism. The theory focuses on students
feelings, affective and emotional factors. In my own opinion, all teachers must know how to
adapt these theories in their teaching skills. Teachers should not be practicing only one or two
theories because all of the three theories are really important to make sure the pupils can gain
more knowledge besides learning in a stable emotion. Learning this thing makes it easier for me
to figuring out what kind of teacher I want to be in the future. I hope that I can use as many as
possible of these things when I start teaching at school later.
