'KARAT-M’ SEA WATER SPRINKLING SYSTEM

Components.
(a) Temperature Sensor. When the temperature rises at a
rate in excess of 2°C/sec or exceeds 70° C (+/- 7° C). This is sensed
by a temperature pick-up (sensor).

(b) Pressure Sensor. When static air pressure rises at a rate

in excess of 0.2 Kg/Cm2 minimum with an operating threshold of
0.08 +/- 0.01 kg/sq.cm/min. This is sensed by a pressure pick-up
(sensor).

(c) Sprinklers. The sea water sprinkling system drains

water from firemain system to fight fire in the
compartments/magazines. The pipe system in magazine is initially
filled with fresh water and contains spring loaded sprinklers. As
soon as firemain pressure is applied to the pipe system a complete
drenching of all sections of the concerned magazine is achieved at
the same time.
(d) Dozor Panel. The sea water sprinkling system drains
water from firemain system to fight fire in the
compartments/magazines. In all these compartments the system
can also be actuated from ECP containing the panel called 'DOZOR'
or from local position through pneumatically operated quick
opening valve.
(e) Quick Operating Valve. When the temperature and
pressure reaches the pre determined values, Karat-M system
operates and electric power is supplied to the explosive
cartridges of the quick operating valve and to the explosive
cartridges of the locking heads on the pneumatic drive bottles
of the quick operating valve. The explosive cartridges open
the quick operating valve and the locking heads. In this case,
air from bottles is feed into the working cylinder of the
pneumatic drives of the quick operating valve thus duplicating
the operation of their own pyro technic actuator.

(f) Air Bottle. When the Karat-M system operates the electric
power is supplied to the explosive cartridge of the air bottles.
In this case the cartridge is ignited and air from the bottle is
feed into the working cylinder of the pneumatic drives of the
quick operating valve.

(g) Inhibitor system. The system is brought into operation

alongwith 'KARAT-M' system automatically. When the system
operates the freon and air mixture is sprayed into the gas
escaping out of the concerned magazine and this acts against
a spring loaded hatch cover which is flung open to release
pressure, built up in the magazine and thus avoid explosion in
the compartment. The system is installed to prevent explosion
of gases produced in the magazine on account of fire in the
compartment and prevents other gases (oxygen) entering in
the magazine when the hatch is lifted. The system can be
operated manually from DOZOR panel in ECP or by the system
KARAT-M automatically.

OPERATING PROCEDURE OF KARAT – M SYSTEM:

 Karat – M system comes into operation when the temperature rises

at a rate in excess of 2° C/sec or exceeds 70° C (+/- 7° C). This is
sensed by a temperature pick-up (sensor) and when static air
pressure rises at a rate in excess of 0.2 Kg/Cm2 minimum with an
operating threshold of 0.08 +/- 0.01 kg/sq.cm/min. This is sensed by
a pressure pick-up (sensor).
 Feed of temperature and pressure sensor are feed to dozar panel.

 On receiving the feed Dozar panel sends the following signals:

 Fire signal which operates a howler.

 Signal to start the fire main pump.

 Signal to shut off ventilation.

 Signal to fire cartridges of quick operating valve and air

bottles.

 Signal to operate the Freon gas bottle.

 On receiving Freon gas release signal, a signal to open the

spring loaded hatch.

INDICATION AVAILABLE:

 The following indications are available when Karat – M system

operates:

 Indication of availability of air for opening quick operating

valve.

 Indication that water from fire main has been released upto
the compartment.
 Inhibitor operated signal, which indicates that Freon gas has
been released into compartment.
 Indication that the firemain isolation valve is open.
