April 4-6, 2005

Sponsored by

$US950 Fee includes course notes, software,

refreshments and lunch each day.
Registration deadline is March 18, 2005.

About the Course

This is a practical short course that will provide a review of basic blasting
theory and blasting products, but will emphasize the design and assessment
of blasting practices. The course will focus on drilling and blasting as it is
applied in mines and quarries. Design methodology for safe and efficient
blasting will be provided. Monitoring and assessment to improve blast
performance and reduce blast vibrations will be discussed. The use of
computers to design blasts and predict blast performance will be
undertaken using a suite of programs. Participants will receive software for
blast design and fragmentation evaluation.
The first day will be a general session covering blasting basics. The second
and third days will be split into separate sessions for underground and
surface operations. The third day will address controlled blasting, the basic
principles of design of slopes and underground excavations in rock and the
manner in which blasting affects excavation performance, pit slope design,
underground support, overbreak, and pillar performance.

Dr. Alan Cameron is a Principal and Senior Mining Consultant in

Golder Associates Sudbury office. He is responsible for providing and
coordinating technical blasting assistance to surface and underground
mining operations. His experience spans 25 years and mining operations on
four continents.
Dr. Tom Kleine is an Associate and Specialist Engineer in Golder
Associates Seattle office. Toms specialty is in blast design and the
prediction of blast performance in fractured rock. He has developed a suite
of blast design and assessment programs.
Graeme Major is a Principal Rock Mechanics Engineer in Golder
Associates Reno Office. He has more than 25 years of experience in pit slope
design throughout the U.S. and internationally.
Kevin Beauchamp is an Associate and Rock Mechanics/Mining
Engineer with Golder Associates Sudbury office. He is involved with mining
and civil projects in Canada and internationally in the areas of rock
mechanics, mine design, mine optimization, mine closure, and blast design.

The course is intended for mine engineers, supervisors, and blasting

personnel involved in the design and implementation of surface and
underground blasting. Topics will be presented in an applied manner and
will address the impact of blasting on mine design and overall mining
efficiency.
The course content is designed to meet the criteria of State Boards of
Professional Engineers for continuing professional competency. A
certificate of completion will be issued to all participants.
