For HEMM and Surface Transportation Machine

Manufactured by Automation Controls, Nagpur, an ISO 9001-2008 Organisation

DGMS approved Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression System (AFDSS) for use in mines under the
provision of Regulation 181(3) of Coal Mines Regulations, 1957 as well as Regulation 73(1) of the Oil Mines
Regulation 1984.

Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression System approved by D.G.M.S. Dhanbad,

Approval No: S-29023/105/2008/SandT/FFS-APPROVAL/1153, Dhanbad, dated 25.11.2008,

Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression System (AFDSS) for use in Heavy Earth MovingMachinery
(HEMM) and Mobile Material Handling Equipments in Mining and Construction industries.

Especially designed for vehicles like Dumpers (35T, 50T, 85T, 100T, 120T,) Dozers, Shovels, Excavators,
Dragline etc. The system can be used in heavy dust, moisture, and variable temperature conditions. Fire is
detected through Linear Heat Sensing (LHS) Cable. Single point flame detector or heat detector can also be
used, where dust or smoke is relatively less.

To protect both man and machine. This is cost effective solution for automatic fire detection and suppression
needs. This AFDSS is tailor made can be design as per the customer requirement.

The system is pre-engineered, well designed, tested and found satisfactory for its performance.

The System is developed to handle all type of A, B and C Class of Fire.

A reliable and effective after sales service is assured all through their life.

System consist of:

1) Control panel,
2) Alarm, speaker,
3) LHS cable (Sensor Cable),
4) Pressurized Main Cylinders of DCP Powder

5) CO2 / N2 Gas Cartage as expellant Gas,

6) Distribution system / Hose assembly,
7) nozzles,
8) Power supply.
If the coverage area is more, then we can increase the quantity of item at sr. no. 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 according to the
requirement.
A very flexible system of Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression System (AFDSS) is developed by Automation
Controls. AFDSS is designed in such a manner, so that its coverage area can be increased as per need. Smallest
system contains one cylinder of 10 Kg of Dry Chemical Powder and 1 Kg of CO2 as an expellant cartage, along with
six numbers of nozzles. The same system can be enlarged by either providing more number of cylinders of same
capacity or by using high capacity cylinders of 25 Kg, 50 Kg, 75 Kg or more. Similarly numbers of nozzles can be
increased to 8, 12, 16 or more to cover larger area. This system can work both automatically as well as manually.
System is designed to utilize fire extinguisher agent Dry Chemical Powder and Carbon dioxide. Other type of agent
like Foam, Water Sprinklers / Water Mist, FM-200, Novac-1230, Inert gases (aragonite) etc. can also be used if
required.

How the System works:

Automatic Operation, Option A
Before installation of the system the fire prone areas are evaluate & marked. Then the LHS cable and nozzles are
installed with the help of suitable hoses in such a way that all nozzles are directed to the fire prone areas. Nozzles
spray the fire extinguisher agent on fire to suppress the same.

At the time of fire, the temperature rises to 180C. The LHS cable detects the fire and gives signal to the control
panel. The control panel starts alarm to alert driver, and the personnel in the surrounding area. It also gives visual
signal on control panel. After few second it energies (opens) the electromechanical actuator located in between
expellant cartridge & main cylinder. From expellant gas cartridge pressurized gas, Carbon dioxide / Nitrogen, to enter
into main cylinder which is filled with fire extinguisher agent. Expellant gas fluidizes fire extinguishing agent and it
flows through distribution system to fixed nozzles and on fire area and fire gets suppressed.

Manually, Option B
In the event of fire, Vehicle Driver can also activate system manually. (1) By operating directly electromechanical
actuator through separate switch provided in control panel or (2) By knob / high pressure ball valve installed in
between expellant cartridge and main cylinder. After this it will work same as the Automatic Operation, Option A
To alert people, an external alarm to deliver message in human voice (FIRE...........FIRE.......) can be provided as an
option if desired.

Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression System. (AFDSS) consists

of:
Control Panel
1.

It operates on 24V DC or 230 V AC.

2.

After signal is received from LHS cable regarding overheat / fire, it initiates Audio Visual Alarmwhich
is DGMS approved. It also gives the visual indication to the operator.

3.

After few seconds it activates auto actuation device and thereby system to suppress the fire automatically.

4.

From Control Panel to activate fire suppression manually by separate push button switch is provided.

5.

One push button switch to delay the activation of auto actuation device is also provided for the safety
measure.

6.

Control panel constantly monitors the system functioning and gives visual indication of,
i) Occurrence of fire,
ii) Expellant gas cartridge pressure,
iii) Condition of LHS cable,
iv) Condition of power supply including battery charge position.

The control panel is rugged, compact, watertight and able to withstand, at the time of fire.

Detection Network
Fire or high temperature is detected by Linear Heat Sensing (LHS) Cable. LHS cable is a sensor cable that detects
heat anywhere along its length. Sensitivity not affected by changes in ambient temperature or length of cable. When

fire is detected it gives the signal to control panel.

Main Cylinder
To store a fire-extinguishing agent. Main Cylinder is filled with Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) and is pressurized by gas
(CO2 / Nitrogen) up to 4 Kg/Cm / 60 PSI to avoid caking of dry powder over a period of time due to humidity. Dry
Chemical Powder ISI marked, Mono Ammonium.

Phosphate
Which is filled in main cylinder. Mono Ammonium Phosphate used in the system is capable to suppress: Class A,
Class B and Class C fire. This powder has excellent extinguishing properties, efficient, free flowing, moisture
repellent, non-abrasive and non-toxic. It is also nonconductive in the electrical installation. Cap Assembly: consist of
actuation device, ball valve, non return valve and pressure Gauge etc.

Expellant gas cartridge

ISI marked approved by the competent authority is used to store the expellant gas. This cartridge is factory filled with
expellant gas as Carbon di-Oxide (CO2) or Nitrogen (N2) under pressure at 40 Kg/Cm (600 PSI).

Auto Actuation device

It works on electro-mechanical principle and exclusively designed to withstand upto 100 Kg/Cm / 1500 PSI pressure
particularly for this system. When control panel gives power supply to this device, it opens and allows expellant gas to
enter into main cylinder.

Manual Operation
A high pressure ball valve suitable for 100 kg pressure is also provided in parallel to activate system manually. In
case the auto actuation device doesnt work this can be done by manual operation.

Delivery system
To carry fire extinguishing agent to the hazard areas through double wire braided high pressure hoses.
Construction of hoses it is Synthetic oil resistant, weather and flame resistant. Maximum Working Pressure: 4000
PSI.

Fixed pre-set aragonite discharge nozzle system

To sprinkle fire-extinguishing material on the fire hazard area. Every nozzle is also provided with dust cap.

Appraisal
The above system is designed and manufactured at our own in house manufacturing facilities. We have full range of
equipments, instruments, gauges and testing equipments to ensure reliability and consistency of quality parameters.
Once the system is activated and put into use however may be partly, the Cylinder and Cartridge are required to be

refilled to the maximum capacity and optimum pressure. This is more essential to provide guaranteed and
dependable service in future, if again fire occurs. Automation Controls ensures immediate replacement of these
cylinders even if they are required frequently and on the equipment located in the remote.
