PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of another
term but time always goes faster when you are busy! The
large number of visits and experiences outside of the classroom have been
a highlight this term including tramps, camps, visits to dairy farms and
beaches, Art Gallerys and the Settlers Museum to name just a few. This
has resulted in some excellent inquiry work taking place in classrooms and
has solidified the students understanding of the concept of sustainability.
Next term, the school will be looking at financial literacy and how
societies function. It will be yet another busy but interesting term!
Shane Melrose will be leaving us at the end of the term as he takes on a
very different job in the New Zealand Fire Service. We have been very
lucky to employ Jason Benoit who has a wealth of experience across all
year levels and will be starting in Term 2 in Room 4.
This is the last newsletter for the term and I would like to wish everyone a
great last week of the term and a wonderful holiday.
Kind regards,
Simon Clarke

Year 6 Camp
The senior classes have had a very busy week pursuing outdoor activities.
The year 6 children went to Camp Iona near the Herbert Forest. We travelled up by bus on Tuesday 17 March,
unpacked and then walked down the river to listen to a local poet read us some of her poems.
Her use of rhythms and rhymes to tell the stories of her environment were clever and the children appreciated
her witty sense of humour in many of her poems. We have her books in our school library.
On the next two days we had a range of activities including an abseiling circuit using a course over the river,
taken by Dave Brash; a Search and Rescue activity led by Constable Ross Greer; a technology challenge to build
a river craft from only found materials; and yachting and kayaking at McKerrows Pond. The children impressed
all of us with their enthusiasm, willingness to give new things a go, and their aspirations to do their best. Their
camping spirits were superb!
There was always a bit more fun in the evenings after dinner, including games, spotlight and our traditional camp
concert where children had the opportunity to provide the entertainment for the night.
Our last moments at camp were also fun with a ride down the slide and a picnic at Moeraki Village. We would
like to pass on a very special thank you to the parents who helped us at camp. We appreciated our camp parent
team, who worked tirelessly.
We are planning on putting all of the photos in a dropbox folder in
the new term for you to be able to download.
