A very special welcome to Mackenzie Sheridan, Aaliyah Sheehan,

Manu Haggie, Leilani Nika, Amelia Hawkins and their families to
Kaikorai Primary School!

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of another
term but time always goes faster when you are busy! The
large number of visits and experiences outside of the classroom have been
a highlight this term including tramps, camps, visits to dairy farms and
beaches, Art Gallerys and the Settlers Museum to name just a few. This
has resulted in some excellent inquiry work taking place in classrooms and
has solidified the students understanding of the concept of sustainability.
Next term, the school will be looking at financial literacy and how
societies function. It will be yet another busy but interesting term!
Shane Melrose will be leaving us at the end of the term as he takes on a
very different job in the New Zealand Fire Service. We have been very
lucky to employ Jason Benoit who has a wealth of experience across all
year levels and will be starting in Term 2 in Room 4.
This is the last newsletter for the term and I would like to wish everyone a
great last week of the term and a wonderful holiday.
Kind regards,
Simon Clarke

Junior News
Well it is nearly the end of a very busy term. The teachers would like to thank all the parents
who have so kindly helped with school trips, PMP, Fun Friday and by just being awesome
supportive parents in your childs learning. Without this partnership we would not make such
amazing progress.
Keep up the reading over the holidays. Most children will bring home some books so that you
can continue to get mileage with their reading.
We look forward to next term when we will be off to the Otago Museum to look at bugs in the
second week. Then in the 3rd week we will be off to DNI pool for an 8-day session of
swimming with the Jill Clarke swim school. Costs and class times will be coming home in a
separate newsletter. PMP and Fun Friday still need your support and they will start in week 5
and go to week 9. Please come and help.
Have a restful break and we will see you back in Term 2 refreshed and ready to learn.
Middle News Wow, this term has flown by and our children are ready for a well deserved break. This term the
children have come up with clever ways to raise money whilst also being sustainable; we raised
over $500 for Orokonui Eco-sanctuary. Thank you to everyone who donated goods, gave their
time or bought books or sherbet.
Look out for Harry and Taylors letter to the editor about cats being pets not pests in the Otago
Daily Times. This was a timely article as this issue has reappeared in the media within the last
week.
We wish you all a wonderful time over the holidays and look forward to seeing refreshed and reenergised children in Term 2.

Year 6 Camp
The senior classes have had a very busy week pursuing outdoor activities.
The year 6 children went to Camp Iona near the Herbert Forest. We travelled up by bus on Tuesday 17 March,
unpacked and then walked down the river to listen to a local poet read us some of her poems.

Her use of rhythms and rhymes to tell the stories of her environment were clever and the children appreciated
her witty sense of humour in many of her poems. We have her books in our school library.
On the next two days we had a range of activities including an abseiling circuit using a course over the river,
taken by Dave Brash; a Search and Rescue activity led by Constable Ross Greer; a technology challenge to build
a river craft from only found materials; and yachting and kayaking at McKerrows Pond. The children impressed
all of us with their enthusiasm, willingness to give new things a go, and their aspirations to do their best. Their
camping spirits were superb!
There was always a bit more fun in the evenings after dinner, including games, spotlight and our traditional camp
concert where children had the opportunity to provide the entertainment for the night.
Our last moments at camp were also fun with a ride down the slide and a picnic at Moeraki Village. We would
like to pass on a very special thank you to the parents who helped us at camp. We appreciated our camp parent
team, who worked tirelessly.
We are planning on putting all of the photos in a dropbox folder in
the new term for you to be able to download.

Who Wants Our Children to be Safer?

All parents are reminded of the importance of obeyingallroad rules when dropping off or
picking up children from the school gates. Pleasedo not:
double park
park on dotted yellow lines
drive on foot paths
park across neighbours driveways.
These behaviours are not only illegal but also endanger your children. In the interests of child
safety, please consider dropping your child off a short walking distance from school. We live in a
safe community and the independence provided by a 50m-100m walk is good for your child.

Winter Sports
Your child may have come home with a notice about playing a sport this winter season. If you
have filled this out and returned it that is all you need to do. If however you havent seen a notice
and you would like your child to play a sport this winter season please click on the web link.
