Letters of Reference: Five in Total

Spring, 2015

I am delighted to write this letter of recommendation for Karly Sachs. As her student
teaching supervisor, I have observed Karly in a culturally diverse classroom for many
weeks. She is a vivacious young woman whose infectious enthusiasm makes learning
fun!
I am impressed with her ability to have excellent rapport with her students and at the
same time maintain a controlled atmosphere of mutual respect. She is consistent and
reasonable with her expectations of their behavior. Her idea of lessening times out of the
room to the restroom/locker was spot on when she required students to leave their cell
phones on her desk when they were gone students either hurried back or decided they
didnt want to leave at all.
She knows her math content solidly. She is able to explain concepts and processes in
terms that everyone can understand.
And she is so creative with teaching those concepts and processes. Students may put a
post-it on the wall or draw an illustration or answer a question from a super hero; they are
always engaged and doing something. When students can explain deriving the laws of
sines and cosines and how to use them, you know they have a solid grasp of their
learning. For those who take a bit longer, she makes herself available during her lunch
time and before and after school. Nothing makes her prouder than to have a student
finally get it.
Karly follows student learning with many different assessments. Formative assessments
help drive her planning and pacing. She adapted to her schools standards-based grading
system very well and was able to discuss students progress with parents at conferences.
To describe Karly, she is organized, punctual meeting deadlines, a creative planner, very
comfortable with technology, and personable with and respected by adults and students
alike.
As a retired 30-year principal, would I like the chance to hire her or send my grandkids to
her classroom? YES!

To Whom It May Concern,

It is with great pleasure that I recommend Karly Sachs to you as a teacher of mathematics and science. I
have known Karly for 2 years and have worked with her as her coopering teacher during the student
teaching process. During Karlys time with me she has shown characteristics of an excellent teacher as
well as shown me that she is willing to accept re-direction and suggestion as she learns the art of teaching
in the real-world setting.
I have had many student teachers over the years and Karly stands out as one who has the natural abilities
to take charge of a group of students and receive their respect and cooperation. She does not need to
threaten to punish; she just sets standards, treats the students with respect, and the students, in turn,
respond with compliance. This is not a common occurrence with student teachers. Karly has done an
excellent job with maintaining the high standards I set for my students while developing her own lessons
plans for the units we are studying. Her own personal math/science skills are excellent and she has been
comfortable teaching any level while in this high school placement and her creativity when creating
lessons just cant be beat. She is right on target with planning things that will engage this age student.
Naturally, Karly is just learning how to put into practice the things she has learned from professors and
from observations of classrooms and as a result, things planned sometimes dont go off as expected. Karly
has done a terrific job of accepting criticism and suggestion from more experienced teachers. I find this to
be a fine quality for a beginning teacher to have.
I am the math department chair at this high school and I would be happy to have Karly as a member of my
staff. I know that once you meet her and see her teach you will agree!
Most Sincerely,

Cindy Percival
