(1) All questions are compulsory.

(2) All questions carry equal marks.
(3) Neatness in handwriting and clarity in expression carries weightage

1. For rods of different radii r and length l are used to connect two reservoirs of water at different
temperatures. The increase in length is
A. Small in all
B. More in shorter rod
C. More in longer rod
D. More in thinner rod
2. There are two spheres of same material and radius. One is solid and the other is hollow. If they are
heated then the expansion of
A. Solid sphere is more
B. Hollow sphere is more
C. Solid and hollow spheres are equal
D. Solid is outward while that of hollow inwarad
3. The length of each steel rail is 10m in winter. If the co-efficient of linear expansion of steel is 12 x
10-6/0C and the temp. increases by 150C in summer, the gap to be left between the rails is
A. 0.0018m
B. 0.0012m
C. 0.0022m
D. 0.05m
4. If a bimetallic strip is heated it will
A. Twist itself into a helix
B. Not bend at all
C. Bend towards the metal with lower thermal expansion co-efficient
D. Bend towards the metal with higher thermal expansion co-efficient
5. 80g of water at 300C are poured on a large block of ice at 00C. The mass of the ice that melts is
A. 1600mgm
B. 30 gm
C. 150 gm
D. 8 gm
6. A beaker of water is placed on a table, it can be made to boil by passing
A. Steam through it at atmospheric pressure
B. Steam through it at a pressure lower than the atmospheric pressure
C. Steam through it at a pressure higher than the atmospheric pressure
D. Hot wire

7. The particulars of a single acting, two-stroke heavy oil engine are:

Bore 380mm, stroke 1100 mm, number of cylinders 5.
The specific fuel consumption - (brake) of the engine is 0.177 kg/KWh when developing 2600 KW
brake power at 162 r.p.m. and using heavy fuel oil of calorific value 42707 KJ/kg. Calculate the
Brake Mean Effective Pressure and brake thermal efficiency of the engine under these conditions.
40 tonnes of lubricating oil is circulated through the engine per hour, the inlet and outlet
temperatures of the lub oil are 24OC and 49OC respectively. Taking the specific heat of the lubricating
oil as 2.1 KJ/kg K, calculate the heat carried away by it as a percentage of the heat supplied to the
engine. Calculate also the mass flow (tonne/h) of cooling water are passing through the oil cooler if
the inlet and outlet temperatures of the water are 21OC and 31OC, taking the specific heat of water as
4.9 KJ/kg K.
8. A single stage, single acting air compressor running at 1000 rev/min delivers air at 25 bar. For this
purpose the induction and free air conditions can be taken as 1.013 bar and 15OC and the free air
delivery as 0.25m3/min. The clearance volume is 3% of the swept volume and the stroke/bore ratio is
1.2/1. Calculate the bore and stroke and the volumetric efficiency of this machine. Take the index of
compression and expansion as 1.3. Calculate also the indicated power and the isothermal efficiency.
9. State what is meant by the term isothermal expansion.
An engine cylinder of 75mm diameter and 150mm stroke contains 1gm of air at a temperature of
15OC. Calculate the work required to compress the air isothermally to a pressure of 7 bar. Neglect the
clearance volume. Take Cp = 1.005 KJ/kg K ; Cv = 0.717 KJ/kg K.
10. The velocity of the steam from the nozzles of a turbine is 500 m/s, the angles of the nozzles to blade
motion is 18O 30' and the blade entrance angle is 30O. Find (a) the linear velocity of the blades so that the steam enters without shock1and
(b) the rotational speed of the rotor in revolution per second if the mean diameter of the blade ring is
675mm.
If the blade inlet and exit angles are equal. Calculate also the magnitude and direction of the
absolute velocity of the steam at exit.
