You may never

have to mill your

products again.
The Ross PreMax is far more efficient than any
disperser or pre-mixer available today. Dispersing
solids such as TiO2, carbon black and phthalo blue,
it routinely reduces the number of passes needed
through a mill. In many applications the PreMax

Newest Sun Chemical

Sustainability Report
Highlights the Environmental
Footprint of its Suppliers
Sun Chemical released its 2012
Sustainability Report, which showcases
Sun Chemicals leadership in eco-efficiency through established data-driven
metrics, as well as examples of how raw
material suppliers are contributing to the
companys environmental footprint.
The report describes a balanced
scorecard approach that Sun Chemical
uses to assess suppliers environmental
performance and provides details about
questionnaires that were sent to suppliers
asking about their sustainability policies,
carbon footprint emissions, the potential
impact on deforestation, etc.
Were going beyond providing meaningful data that will help meet customer
goals, said Gary Andrzejewski, Sun
Chemicals corporate vice president of
environmental affairs. We are showing concrete examples of things our raw
material suppliers are doing to help Sun
Chemical meet and improve upon its ecoefficiency goals. It is our goal to manufacture products that help our customers
better meet their environmental goals and

we can only do that by ensuring our suppliers are also doing their part to contribute to sustainable practices.
The report shows data collected every year since 2005 from approximately
170 Sun Chemical sites in more than 25
countries. The key sustainability metrics
measured in the data include: energy consumption/conservation at production and
non-production sites, the energy carbon
footprint at the production sites, process
waste reduction, water consumption, materials safety, and employee safety.
Providing a report that shows the ongoing management and monitoring of key
sustainability metrics is an important part
of Sun Chemicals sustainability policy.
All of Sun Chemicals sustainability reports, along with the Carbon
Footprint Report 2010, which outlines
the results from nine independent environmental analyses focused on quantifying the carbon footprint of its product
lines, are available to customers and can
be requested online at www.sunchemical.com/sustainability.
Customers in the U.S. can also calculate the initial carbon footprint for
their facility operations by visiting www.

North American International Auto Show

PPG Industries is bringing innovation to

the automotive industry, and the companys product and technology offerings
across several of its businesses help automakers and automotive suppliers enhance manufacturing efficiencies, make
vehicles more corrosion-resistant, reduce
energy consumption and improve fuel
efficiency. These were some of the key
topics discussed by PPG executives at a
news conference held during the North
American International Auto Show.

PPG is a leading global automotive

industry supplier across many product
lines that for decades has made cars more
colorful and appealing, but also higherperforming and environmentally friendly
machines, said Cynthia A. Niekamp,
PPG senior vice president, automotive

use of PPG electrocoat technology in an
automotive plant. This game-changing innovation has helped the industry manage

the problem with rust. We are pleased to

continue this tradition that started with
the 1963 Ford Thunderbird and now
benefits car owners everywhere.
According to Niekamp, more than
51,000 vehicles are treated with PPG

NrnbergMesse and Vincentz Network Invest in PAINTINDIA Trade Fair

Colour Publications, Vincentz Network and NrnbergMesse will sign a contract for PAINTINDIAs future in an
official ceremony in Mumbai. The two German companies,
a publishing house and a trade fair company, will acquire
an interest in the trade fair previously owned by one of
the leading and oldest publishers for techno-commercial
journals in India. The goal is to lay a solid foundation for a
long-lasting commitment.
As organizers of the leading coatings trade show, the European Coatings Show, Vincentz Network and NrnbergMesse look
back on 20 years of a strong, trusting partnership and plenty of
experience in running coatings shows and conferences. In addition NrnbergMesse North America runs, the American Coatings
Show, the highlight event of the U.S. paint and coatings industry,
on behalf of the organizers American Coatings Association and
Vincentz Network, while Vincentz Network is responsible for the
high-quality conferences accompanying these trade fairs.
Since the inception of PAINTINDIA in 1993 Colour Publications has succeeded in establishing this exhibition series as the
prime forum for the Indian coatings industry. The new line-up
enables the three companies to cooperate in one of the most
important international growth markets for coatings. It combines
the expertise in science, international industry and in organizing
highly specialized trade shows and conferences.
The paint and coatings sector in India is growing almost twice as strongly as the real gross national product,
said Dilip Raghavan, managing director of Colour Publications, about the positive prospects for PAINTINDIA. Both
national and international suppliers therefore expect their
product sales to grow by 15 to 20 percent a year in the coming years. I am very delighted to start this promising future
with two strong and experienced partners.

This contract will lay the

ground for merging the strength
of the three shows to access this
enormous business potential.
Jonas Vincentz, CEO of Vincentz

BASF and Nissan Announce

Streamlined Processes
BASF has expanded its partnership
with Nissan, now supplying the automaker with coatings and paints for
the Pathfinder and Infiniti models at its
Smyrna plant in Tennessee.
BASF supplies Nissan with coating
solutions from e-coat and basecoat to
clearcoat. BASF is also working on more
streamlined technologies with Nissan in
emerging markets such as China.
Nissan is a very important customer
for us and we have been working closely
for a long time, said Laurent Vaucenat,
global account manager for Nissan at
BASFs Coatings Division. BASFs innovative solutions and services, as well
as our leading-edge technologies, have
convinced Nissan to extend their collaboration with us, especially with our 3 Wet
waterborne coating technique.
The most notable advantage of the 3
Wet waterborne system is the elimination of one drying phase. Previously, car
bodies required two 30-minute rounds in
the drying oven, after application of the
primer, and the basecoat/clearcoat. In the
new method, these three layers are applied wet-on-wet, and then subsequently
dried. This shortened process leads to
shorter production time, less energy consumption, streamlined paint lines and
above all lower emissions.
BASF is the supplier of sprayables
(primer, basecoats and clearcoats) for
Nissans European production sites in
Sunderland (England), St. Petersburg
(Russia) and Barcelona (Spain).
We are where our customers are.
This is why we are increasingly expanding our presence in growing markets
like China, where we currently supply
Nissans Huadu plant, says Vaucenat.
BASF has long-standing supply relationships with Nissan in Japan and India.
In 2012, the close partnership resulted
in an award from Zhengzhou Nissan
Auto Co., Ltd., honoring BASF with the
Excellent R&D Supplier Award for the
excellent quality in the supply of environmentally friendly car paint.

the Mexican Paint Industry

IRL has released the first edition of A

Profile of the Mexican Paint Industry.
According to the report, Mexicos paints
and coatings sector was valued at $2,100
million in 2011. The elections taking place
in July 2012 momentarily slowed down the
pace of growth in the economy and had
a negative effect on consumer confidence.
Prior to that the sector was enjoying a period of rapid expansion with Mexicos GDP
growth rate outperforming that of Brazil in
2011 and poised to surpass it once again
in 2012.
The study examines nine mainstream
coatings segments independently. It includes market data for 2011 and five year
market forecasts to 2016 for each of these,
with further anticipated figures for 2012.
Market dynamics and trends for each coating type are provided with an indication of
market splits by technology and/or chemistry where possible.
This report will serve as a valuable tool
to strategic planners, business analysts
and marketing managers involved in the
manufacture, distribution and marketing of
paints and coatings and their raw materials,
according to IRL

U.S. Demand for Solvents

to Reach 10.9 billion
Pounds in 2016
U.S. solvents demand will continue to rebound from its recessionary lows, rising
1.5% per year in volume terms through 2016
to 10.9 billion pounds. A strong rebound
in construction activity will drive strong
increases in solvent demand in the construction and paints and coatings markets.
Above average growth in consumer oriented
markets such as cleaning products and cosmetics and toiletries will stimulate demand
for green solvents, particularly butanediol
derivatives, terpenes and alcohols.
These and other trends are presented in Solvents, a new study from The
Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based
industry market research firm.
Demand growth for green solvents will

significantly outpace that for conventional

types, rising nearly four times faster than
conventional solvents. The rising use of
green solvents will reflect increasing consumer demand for environmentally friendly
products. Government regulations are also
driving the shift, both at the state and federal levels. In particular, the need to meet
VOC regulations has benefited demand
for glycol solvents in the paints and coatings. Chemical processors looking to comply with VOC regulations are increasingly
turning toward butanediol and its derivatives to lower VOC content while continuing to use solvents. While complying with
local, state and federal regulations, the
construction market has been increasingly
turning towards alcohols and ketones like
MEK for solvent uses.

Frost and Sullivan Reports

on the Decorative Coatings
Market in Kenya and
Tanzania
The mushrooming of housing complexes,
office buildings and shopping malls in
Kenya and Tanzania has escalated the need
for decorative paint and coatings in these
countries, according to new study from
Frost and Sullivan. The new study, Supply
and Demand Analysis of the Decorative
Paint and Coatings Market in Kenya and
Tanzania reports that as a result of rapid
urbanization, the domestic construction
industry will soon begin competing in the
global arena, creating significant demand
for better quality decorative paints.
New analysis from Frost and Sulllivans
Supply and Demand Analysis of the
Decorative Paint and Coatings Market in
Kenya and Tanzania, finds that the market earned revenues of more than $123.3
million in 2011 and estimates this to reach
$188.5 million by 2018.
As part of the plan to make Kenya
a middle-income country by 2030, the
Government approved the National
Construction Authority Bill to initiate
new construction projects and improve

16 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

the quality of existing infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Tanzanian governments
strategic plan over 2012-2017 includes the
expansion of housing units.
Such proactive government policies will
encourage middle-income housing and in
turn, the adoption of higher quality paints
that are easy to apply and maintain, said
Frost and Sullivans chemicals materials and
food research analyst, Bhavisha Jaga.
Economic growth in neighboring countries will further compel manufacturers with
export market share to increase production
capacity. However, fluctuations in the exchange rate cause instability in the Kenyan
and Tanzanian paint and coatings market.
Exchange rate volatility assumes higher
significance in these markets since 60%90% of the raw materials are imported
from the European Union and Asia. Sale
volumes decreased due to the depreciation
of the Kenyan shilling by 13.5% in 2010 to
2011 and the steep oil and titanium prices
(which account for 60% of the total production cost) passed onto the consumer.
High domestic inflation in Kenya and
Tanzania has also raised manufacturing
costs substantially, with consignment delays further holding up manufacturing.
To evade fluctuations and inflation,
manufacturers can place orders for raw
materials in advance at a particular price,
said Jaga. In addition, expanding the supplier base will reduce the lead time taken in
receiving raw materials.

Freedonia Group
Predicts U.S. Demand for
Fluoropolymers to Rise
5.3% to $2.4 billion in 2016
U.S. demand for fluoropolymers is forecast
to increase 5.3% annually to $2.4 billion
in 2016, with volume totaling 198 million
pounds. Advances will be spurred by an
improving economic outlook, which will
drive industrial output and boost construction activity. While market value gains will
only slightly outpace those of the 20062011 period, growth in volume terms is
projected to accelerate considerably. This is
because the challenging economic environment associated with the 2007-2009 recession held down market volume during the
2006-2011 period while strong increases
in pricing during the latter portion of the
period propped up value gains. Going forward, the situation is expected to reverse,
with growth in market value stemming
mainly from expanding volume demand,
rather than rising price levels. Gains in
market value will also benefit from trends
favoring higher performing fluoropolymer
resins as end-users seek better cost-benefit
ratios. These and other trends are presented

by Transparency Market Research Global

Oleochemicals Market (Glycerine, Fatty
Acids, Fatty Alcohols), Downstream
Application Potential, 2010 - 2018, the
global market for oleochemicals was estimated to be more than 13 million tons in
2010 which is expected to reach 15 million tons by 2018, growing at a CAGR of
6% from 2013 to 2018. Asia Pacific is the
fastest growing market for oleochemicals,
growing at a CAGR of 8.2% from 2013 to
2018.
The global market for oleochemicals
was led by Asia Pacific market sharing
approximately 68% of the global market
in 2011. Asia Pacific also accounted for
more than 60% of the global capacity for
oleochemicals in 2011. Europe was the second largest market with 18% of the global
market for the same year.
Oleochemicals are widely used in many
industries including soaps and detergents,
plastics, rubber, lubricants, paper, paint,
coatings and personal care. Some of the
major factors driving the global market
of oleochemicals include the growing demand for environment friendly products
and regulatory/government support for the
production of oleochemicals. Some of the
factors acting as barriers to the growth of
global oleochemicals market include poor
utilization rates practiced in the industry
and rising feedstock cost, especially in the
European market.
However huge opportunities lie in the
Asia Pacific market owing to growing demand for oleochemicals in emerging countries like China and India. Malaysia and
Indonesia are two countries where abundant raw material is available at cheap rates.

in Fluoropolymers, a new study

from The Freedonia Group, Inc.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
is forecast to maintain its position
as the leading product in both volume and
value terms through 2016. Demand will
benefit from widespread use in the large
industrial processing market and expanding opportunities in emerging applications
such as chemical processing and industrial
filtration. However, the most robust gains
are forecast for polyvinyl fluoride (PVF)
and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). PVF
demand will rise rapidly from a relatively
small base, fueled by stellar growth in the
photovoltaic module segment despite greater competition from less expensive alternative materials. PVDF will capture a greater
share of the market, advancing strongly
through 2016 based on rebounding growth
in the architectural coating segment, as well
as rising use in electronics, particularly advanced batteries.
The industrial processing market will remain the largest outlet through the forecast
period, benefiting from tightening performance requirements. Faster gains are anticipated in the construction and electrical and
electronics markets. Fluoropolymer use in
architectural coatings will continue to rise
due to superior performance characteristics. Above average advances in the electrical and electronic market will be fueled by a
rebound in electrical and electronic product
output overall and wire and cable production in particular. Explosive growth in photovoltaic module production will generate
opportunities for fluoropolymers as interest
in alternative energy sources such as solar
power swells. CW

MesoCoat Considers
Brazilian Pipe Coating Partnership

uclid, Ohio-based MesoCoat Inc. is considering a four-line pipe cladding facility

in Brazil in cooperation with state petroleum company Petrobras that would serve
Brazils rising demand for oil and gas pipelines
in new discovery areas and in established networks. MesoCoat is currently mounting a $6.3
million one-line factory in Euclid with an annual throughput of up to 30 kilometers of pipe.
Once this pilot plant is established, the company could pursue the larger industrial format
in Brazil and other countries, company executives have said. Site work in Brazil is already
advanced, one source indicates.
Petrobras currently plans to add 230 kilometers of new oil and gas pipeline for an anticipated service date of 2014. The company has an
existing pipeline network of more than 30,000
kilometers, as the fifth largest petroleum company in the world with a market capitalization
of $140 billion. Petrobras has a history of forming partnerships with global technology leaders
to bring manufacturing technology to Brazil.
The country also has substantial domestic content rules for supplying state companies: pipe
supply in Brazil faces a 70 percent local content
threshold, a MesoCoat executive noted.
Petrobras in January 2011 signed
a cooperation agreement with
MesoCoat to test the latters exterior and interior pipe coatings. In
April, Brazils Central Bank reported that Petrobras and MesoCoat
had together registered foreign capital in the country.
MesoCoats parent company
Abakan Inc, of Miami, secured a lowinterest $1 million loan in October
from Ohios Innovation Ohio Loan
Fund to build out the pilot plant.
The company also has received U.S.
Department of Energy funding for
the proving of the company technology. MesoCoats process is plasma

arc-fired cermet mixed ceramic and metallic

elements which the company claims can be
deposited at a thickness of 20 micrometers at
a speed of one-fortieth of competing welding
clad processes, and at a 20 percent savings over
competing processes. The coatings are projected
to increase the life span of the underlying pipe
by a factor of three to 20 years. Among institutions that have helped develop and test the
MesoCoats CermaClad technology is the U.S.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Metal cladding for wear and corrosion
protection is a $3.8 billion global market of
which approximately 50 percent is for coating
steel pipes which are used in the oil and gas,
oil sands, mining and processing industries,
according to a MesoCoat statement. The company also suggests that this market will double
over the next four years since many new oil and
gas discoveries are in more corrosive environments. In Brazil, an estimated 80 percent of all
reserves are located in so-called sour environments. MesoCoat is also attempting to reduce
the diameter of pipe into which its coating
equipment will fit, and currently can coat the
inside of a 7.5 inch diameter pipe.
Among competitors for MesoCoat in Brazil
is Socotherm Brasil, originally an Italian company, which provides external and internal
coats using epoxy, polyethylene, polypropylene and polyurethane, at its factory in
Pindamonhangaba, in Sao Paulo state. CW

Economic Slowdown in Europe

Results in Raw Material Prices Softening

A slowdown in
the econcomy
of Western
Europe, which is
causing falls in
sales of coatings,
has been the
main reason
for softening of
chemical prices.

by Sean Milmo

smilmo@rodmanmedia.com

he relentless rise in raw materials costs,

which has been hitting European coatings
producers over the last 2-3 years, has at
last been easing. But the relief from the constant
pressure of rising input prices may be short lived.
The first signs of a flattening-out of price
increases across a broad spectrum of organic
and inorganic chemicals used in coatings formulations came last summer. Then in the fourth
quarter of last year prices of some key materials
began to go down.
Associations representing chemical and related sectors are predicting that in 2013 prices
will stabilize to stay at much the same level at
the end of last year.

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

A slowdown in the economy of Western

Europe, which is causing falls in sales of coatings, particularly in the decorative paints sector, has been the main reason for softening of
chemical prices in response to decreases in the
consumption of chemicals by coatings manufacturers and other key customers of the chemicals industry.
AkzoNobels sales from decorative paints in
Europe, its main market for decorative coatings,
declined by one percent in the third quarter.
Decorative sales declined across all parts of the
region, reflecting severe weakness of demand,
according to the company. In the companys
performance coatings operation, demand for
wood finishes and adhesives and powder coatings also went down in Europe.
The company reported that during the quarter raw material costs were only slightly above
those of the previous year and compared to
rises in the second quarter had leveled out.
February 2013

Europe International Coatings Scene

Even in Eastern Europe, where coatings
demand has been much stronger during the
economic downturn since 2008, sales have
been faltering. Tikkurila of Finland, whose
main markets are in Eastern Europe, particularly Russia, recorded flat sales in the
third quarter while in the first nine months
of 2012 they went up by 4.8 percent.
European demand for coatings is
poor so as a result prices of some chemical raw materials have been weakening,
explained Alan Eastwood, senior economist at the UKs Chemical Industries
Association (CIA) and chair of the economic forecasting panel of the European
Chemical Industry Council (Cefic), representing chemical producers.
Major buyers of coatings like automobile makers are having a bad time,
except in a few countries like the UK, he
added. The construction industry is in
the doldrums across much of Europe.
The economic outlook for the 17-nation
eurozone has worsened in recent months.
The Washington-based
International
Monetary Fund is now predicting that the
zones average GDP will decline by 0.2 percent in 2013 after the IMF forecast a slight
rise of 0.1 percent in October.
Chemical suppliers are expecting the
squeeze on chemical sales to continue to
well into this year with a possible pickup
in the second half of 2013. After a two
percent fall in output in 2012, mainly due
to slide in sales since the summer, chemicals production is expected by Cefic to go
up in 2013 by 0.5 percent mainly because
of a recovery later in the year.
However there are forces at work that
are still preventing sharp falls in many
chemical prices, indicating that they
could quickly rise again with a revival in
demand in sectors like coatings.
The latest figures from Cefic confirm
that by the beginning of fourth quarter, the
impetus behind the long period of chemical
price increases was distinctly fading after an
average year-on-year 3.4 percent rise in the
first half of 2012. By October the average
increase had dropped to below three percent with those for inorganic and consumer
chemicals going up by only 1.3 percent.
Nonetheless prices for petrochemical-based chemicals, which make up the
majority of those used in most coatings

However there are

formulations, have been demonstrating

resilience. They went up year on year by
5.1 percent in October.
Chemical producers are putting a
lot of effort into maintaining their prices
because due to continuing high oil prices
the costs of their own feedstocks are still
high, explained Henrik Meincke, head of
the economics department of the German
Chemical Industry Association (VCI).
Nonetheless the VCI is forecasting that
in Germany overall chemical prices in
Europes largest coatings market will go up
by only 0.5 percent this year, compared with
an average of just under 3 percent in 2012.
In the fourth quarter of 2012 and at
the beginning of this year, there have even
been signs of softening of prices for petrochemical derivatives. Spot prices for
some coatings solvents have been going
down because of surplus output.
Some chemical companies in Europe
have even been reducing their own output to prevent excess supplies pulling
down prices. The scarcity of production
capacity for some chemicals is enabling
producers to reduce utilization of their
plants while staying profitable.
However in a crucial raw materials sector like titanium dioxide a tight
balance between supply and demand is

February 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

disappearing at least for the moment.

After the 2008 financial crisis TiO2
prices in Europe almost doubled after a
spate of closures of high-cost, low efficiency plants in the region.
The current supply cycle in TiO2
with demand outstripping production
capacity seems to be coming to an end,
said Eastwood. The post-2008 rationalization in the sector sent prices sky
high because there was no new capacity to deal with a recovery in demand.
Now demand has fallen so sharply that
the sector is showing the usual ups and
downs of a commodity market.
Major players in the European TiO2
market, such as Huntsman Corp, DuPont
and Rockwood Holdings, owners of
Sachtleben of Germany, announced falls
in sales or profitability in the third quarter of last year.
Producers of the pigment have been
cutting prices by 5-10 percent in recent
months in Europe to reverse a trend of
persistently rising prices since 2009. For
some the demand has been so low that
they had to seek buyers of their output in
Asia and Latin America.
Nevertheless the likely excess in capacity in TiO2 and other important coatings raw materials this year will not be
big enough to withstand a predicted upsurge in coatings demand in 2014 without prices going up again.
Even if you cannot produce more when
you want to, there will inevitably be a strong
rise in chemical prices, said Meincke.
Some analysts believe, however, that in
the longer term the best hope for coatings
producers and other downstream users of
petrochemical and other organic chemicals is a decline in the oil price.
Weve had persistent high oil prices
for at least two years in succession at a
time of a weakening global economy,
which is historically unprecedented, said
Paul Hodges, chairman of the Londonbased consultancy International eChem.
Oil prices need to come down substantially if they are to reflect the reality of
current economic conditions.
That big decrease in oil prices may
happen. But unfortunately for coatings
producers it could only occur a long time
in the future. CW

Business Idea Champions . . . . .

Where Do They Come From?
by Phil Phillips, PhD
Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net

HEMARK has found that ideas can be

forthcoming from many different sources in business organizations. Ideas can
be generated for example, from both within the
organization itself, as well as outside the direct
confines of the organization.

An Idea

Within the organizational entity

1. Top management

2. Middle management

3. Labor

4. Sales Persons

Outside the organization

1. Customers

2. Distributors

3. Consultants

4. Application suppliers
These idea sources are not uncommon and
most of you are saying that you are aware of
these sources and many of you have utilized
these sources with relative success. However,
there are two constraints in effectively utilizing
these sources routinely and . . . . successfully:
The two constraints are:

Champion is
a person who,
once learning
about the Idea,
catches the vision
of its tangible
and intangible
possibilities.

Strategies & Analysis Business Corner

Technological shifts cause problems and opportunities.

Where would the coatings industry be if EPA had not been
creating a push for its change?
Effectively capturing the ideas and
communicating same and,
Finding an effective Idea Champion.
We will address only the Idea
Champion in this article. What is an Idea
Champion? Why is the Idea Champion
important? Where can an Idea Champion
come from?
An Idea Champion is a person who,
once learning about the Idea, catches
the vision of its tangible and intangible
possibilities for the organization and
either has now or has been given, the
authority to proceed. An additional
key attribute the Idea Champion must
possess is an emotional attachment
to its theme. Ideas can be generated,
catalogued, prioritized and assigned
for promotional follow up, but without the Idea Champion who sees the
unique possibilities of the idea and
provides the initiative and emotional
promotion to fuel its flight, it many
times, will fall far short of its potential
even though the idea is in fact good for
the company.
Initiative to consider a broad array of Ideas is usually aligned with a
disruptive change in the business environment. We find this especially true
when our industry has faced technological shifts that are disruptive to
their normal way of doing business.
Although most times less dramatic
shifts occur that must be dealt with,
here are some major event examples in
the coatings industry:
General metals segment rapid adoption of dry powder coatings starting
in the early 1970s.
Automotive and other major segments moving rapidly into electro
coat starting in the mid-1960s.
Plastic substrates taking significant

share from metal causing a coatings technology shift starting in the

mid-1970s.
UV coatings replacing lacquers and
2K coatings for two-dimensional
plastic and wood substrates starting
in the early-1980s.
EPA pushing for less solvent emissions starting in the early 1960s.
Nano technologies changing (disrupting*) coatings applications and
markets. - 2007

Technological Shifts Cause

Problems and Opportunities
Where would the coatings industry be
if EPA had not been creating a push
for change? Without this directive our
industry would certainly not have expended nearly the resources and converted to other coatings technologies
without a market to accept them . . . an
unmet need. The technology broadening we saw starting in the late 1960s
and early 70s ushering in new coating
systems such as, powder, UV/EB, ecoat, high solids and water-based were
a direct result of a technological disruptive shift need created by a third
party in the coating industries environment . . . EPA.
As suggested, these shifts are many
times subtle and much less obvious
than the ones thus far discussed. Subtle
shifts can produce some of the neatest
opportunities for those who both recognize them early as well as a willingness
to act quickly to establish a champion to expedite its movement. Subtle
shifts can be advantaged and momentum gained without showing your hand
early, thus creating an opportunity for
successful pre-emptive strike position
prior to other suppliers getting their act
together to compete.
*A disruptive innovation is an

February 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually
goes on to disrupt an existing market
and value network (over a few years or
decades), displacing an earlier technology. The term is used in business and
technology literature to describe innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not
expect, typically first by designing for
a different set of consumers in the new
market and later by lowering prices in
the existing market.
In contrast to disruptive innovation,
a sustaining innovation does not create new markets or value networks but
rather only evolves existing ones with
better value, allowing the firms within
to compete against each others sustaining improvements. Sustaining innovations may be either discontinuous (i.e.
transformational or revolutionary)
or continuous (i.e. evolutionary).
It has been our experience that when
projects fail it is usually characterized by
the absence of a volunteer champion.
Some companies sponsor idea champions by providing free time. 3M is an
example of this type management style.
Within large companies, idea champions go by various names and include,
but not limited to, advocate, change agent
or entrepreneur.
Within smaller companies an idea
champion could be the entrepreneur
owner, the founder, a consultant, the next
generation of family ownership, etc.
Ideas can be generated at anyplace
along the supply chain of a company,
both inside it as well as outside the
company proper. These ideas can be
captured and prioritized by members
along this supply chain. However, an
idea can only be championed effectively by someone within the organization itself. CW

(e.g., lack of sufficient manufacturing
or marketing capacity) to maximally
exploit the trade secret yourself.
It is time to license your trade secret
with the caveat that you must take
care that your licensee does not intentionally or unintentionally divulge
your property. A prospective licensee
will likely want to look under the hood
at your trade secrets prior to opening
up their billfold. All the procedures
for maintaining secrecy should be incorporated into the pre-negotiation
confidentiality/nondisclosure and subsequent licensing agreements, as well
as which of your trade secrets will be
part of the agreement(s). The agreement should clarify the licensee should
use reasonable safeguards to maintain
the trade secrets security in order to
maintain its secrecy, and may include
details regarding the security to be implemented, and rights for the licensor
to inspect the security measures.
A licensing agreement, rather than
expressly including the trade secret,
can define the trade secret by reference
to materials in prospective or previous
(e.g., pre-negotiation agreement) communications, and such communications
may be electronic or written materials,
or simply visual and oral disclosures
when the trade secret is know how

rather than, say, a specific formula.

Think of a PowerPoint presentation
with no text and you doing a lot of
talking. However, this can create the
problem of an I told the
licensee the trade secret
versus no you did not argument if things go south.
A confidential written
summary of the visual/oral
disclosure should be made
within an agreed upon time
period to avoid this issue.
Alternatively, though less
theatrical, only written disclosures may be defined in
the licensing agreement as
being the trade secret.
The nuts and bolts of
the license should clearly
delineate that ownership
title to any physical materials, such as prototypes,
documents, equipment, etc.
that are used to communicate the trade secret are
the property of the licensor. Further, prohibitions
on uses of the disclosed
material may be included
with the descriptions of the
grants of the license.
A clause of explicit acknowledgement by the
licensee that the licensed
material is a trade secret
should be included. As part
of the license, other nontrade secret information,
such as publically available know how, confidential information, etc. may be included.
Clauses can be added to receive payment for this information (e.g., training
on use of equipment) and/or to retain
confidentiality of the supplemental materials. Additional clauses should cover
indemnities, warranties and license termination conditions. In other words, the

standard legal stuff.

Once the licensee possesses your
confidential (e.g., trade secret) information, there is a danger that this informa-

tion will be used by them just by being

part of their nontangible knowledge
base. A licensee may seek an exclusion
clause regarding paying royalties for
work produced from use of this nontangible information called residuals.
In short, it is difficult to restrict people
from using the base education you have

given them from developing other ideas
and thus products. What has been seen
can never be unseen! However, what
happens if the licensee improves upon
your trade secret? It would be very desirable, regardless of the presence or absence of a residuals exclusion clause,
to have a clause clarifying that any improvements using the trade secret are
the property of the licensor, regardless

of whether the trade secret itself should

lose its trade secret status during the licensing period. Conversely, what if the
licensee already possesses the trade secret you disclose, independently discovers it, or unrestrictedly obtains it from
another party, or the trade secret was
already publically known (i.e., not a

trade secret)? A clause excluding such

information may be desired by the licensee, if they are well represented.
The licensee typically will extend such a
clause to exclude the trade secret when
it becomes public from sources other
than the licensee, but, as described below, you may want to keep the time
frame for receiving royalties to extend
beyond that point of time.
In the best situation,
trade secrets can be unknown to others indefinitely, and thus retain
their value for a potentially endless period of time.
Some secret processes
for manufacturing have
been maintained without
competitors reverse engineering or independently
rediscovering them for
decades, providing tremendous competitive advantages in certain fields.
In most cases, a trade
secret will ultimately become publically available.
But what you really
need to think about is how
much are your trade secrets
worth to the licensee. Be
aware that a license may
last longer than the trade
secret remains secret to
competitors. And, if the licensee had done a great job
capturing market share, the
profits to you can still be
rolling long after the all the
competitors try to capture
market share with knock
offs.
A classic example
was the case of the formula
for Listerine. Way back in
1881, Dr. J.J. Lawrence licensed the formula to another party with no time limit. Though
the royalty was later reduced and the
rights of the agreement assigned to a
different party, the agreement remained
open ended in duration. In the 1950s,
the licensee tried to end royalty payments on the basis that the formula had
been publically disclosed decades ago,

February 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

and thus was no longer a trade secret.

But the court ruled that the contract still
remained valid though the secret was discovered by the general public or a third
party, and that the formula provided a
head start to the licensee in the field
that was of incalculable value over the
years. You may notice Listerine is in fact
still occupying sizable shelf space in drug
and grocery stores 80+ years after the
formula was published. The take home
message: licensing agreements should be
based on the profits engendered from the
technology embodied in the trade secret
rather than the date secrecy may, unfortunately, be lost.
The real meat and potatoes value of
your intellectual property often is in
your trade secret rather than a patent
portfolio, and you should not forget that
in determining the licensing royalties.
Though your patents may cover related
materials, and must include the best
mode of practicing an invention as of
the date of filing the patent application
(i.e., a previously held trade secret = the
best mode), often after the patent applications filing date new trade secrets
such as substantive refinements and
improvements or spin off technologies
are developed. These additional, nonpatented trade secrets often have the
most real world licensing value as part
of your trade secret portfolio. Further,
patents must disclose the best mode,
but not the worst mode (please do not
give the patent office any ideas, OK?).
Working know how of what not to do the technological dead ends - can be of
tremendous competitive edge value in
accelerating development of a technology by showing a licensee where not to
waste resources in bringing a product to
market. Trade secret licenses have the
additional advantage of being able to
obtain royalties on global use, while a
patent license is limited to the national
jurisdiction that the patent has issued,
the metes and bounds of the claims and
the patents limited lifespan.
In the best of worlds, if you do your
licensing agreement right, your trade secret license can make you money on a
potentially unending commercial future
of a technology. CW

Wood Coatings
Market

As the U.S. economy continues to recover, wood coatings manufacturers reported

growth in 2012 and are optimistic this trend will continue into 2013.

or wood coatings manufacturers 2012 turned out to be

an improvement over the previous year. Decreased unemployment and growth in the housing market were both
cited as reasons for growth in the wood coatings market.
Overall, Minwax reported modest growth in 2012. Were
seeing more positive signs, like growth in the housing market,
and those have us optimistic for continued growth in sales in
2013, said Jacquelyn Ferrara, director of marketing, Minwax,
Sherwin-Williams Wood Care Products. This recovery is certainly taking its time, but several factors, including decreased
unemployment and projected increases in housing sales and
housing starts, should help grow sales in 2013.
Rust-Oleum also continued to see strong growth in the
wood coatings market. The market ahead will heavily depend

on the state of the housing market, said Mark Wilgen, RustOleum brand manager. At the current time, homeowners are
staying in their homes longer and are investing more in the upkeep of their floors, decks, fences and siding. Well-maintained
wood surfaces add to the value of the home and saves money
in the long term.
Homeowners will spend more to ensure the products they
use to finish their wood surfaces will not only look good, but
will also last, Wilgen added. They dont want to invest time
and money on a product that will only hold up for one season.
They want a product that beautifies while also protecting the
surface for years to come. Consumer spending is growing as the
economy continues to recover. The professional market is soft,
but showing signs of stabilization.

FEATURE The Wood Coatings Market

Thompsons Water Seal reported that that the market for
deck cleaners and waterproofers did see a measured level of
growth in 2012. Housing prices appear to be on the upswing
in many markets, but housing starts are still uneven, said
Mike Kozlowski, director of marketing, Thompsons Water
Seal brand. Deck cleaners and coatings represent an affordable way for homeowners to improve the look of their outdoor
spaces and protect their investment at the same time. For
homeowners who do want to
put their property on the market, a beautiful deck can be a
real selling point.
According
to
Benjamin
Moore, third party research suggests, the wood coatings market
saw a decrease in 2011, however the company saw an increase
in market share. It is too soon
to know how the industry did in
2012, but once again Benjamin
Moore had a great year and saw
an increase in this category of
product, said Rob Sheehan, director exterior stain, Benjamin
Moore. We are optimistic for
2013 given the plans we have
put in place for a strong 2013.

DIYer Continues to
Drive Growth
Improvements in the housing
market have certainly given the
wood coatings market a boost
and construction remains a key
market. The DIY market has
also been instrumental in driving growth. While in the past, Courtesy of Thompsons Water Seal.
the DIY market was driven by a
desire by consumers to keep costs down. There are now indications that consumers are undertaking these projects for fun and
a sense of accomplishment.
Construction remains an important piece of the puzzle
and should help increase the overall market for stains and
finishes as that sector continues to improve, said Ferrara.
Were also seeing a growth in the DIY market and have
noticed an interesting trend. Whereas in the thick of the recession consumers turned to DIY as a means to save money,
were now seeing more consumers take on projects because
they want to. They like being able to create one-of-a-kind
pieces with stain and finishes that they choose, and theyre
realizing that todays products are easier to use than they
may have thought. Weve heard this phenomenon referred
to as a makers culture, and another things is happening

with these consumers: theyre taking to social media to share

their projects with others friends, family members and other like-minded individuals which create further interest in
the category.
According to Ferrara, the rise of the DIY blogger is another key trend affecting this market. These bloggers are
very active, vocal consumers of wood staining and wood finishing products, and they run
the range of experience levels
from those tackling their
first projects to others who are
designing, building, staining
and finishing complete furniture pieces and architectural
elements in their homes. These
online influences are another
way that the DIY market continues to grow, as their readers
become inspired to try their
own hand at wood staining
and finishing.
Minwax has reported a cultural trend that relates to color
the growing movement to reuse, recycle, and repurpose
and are finding that it informs
the way people are decorating.
DIYers like what theyre finding in nature the natural graying of wood, for instance, or
the rustic nature of weathered
oak that might be reclaimed or
repurposed from an old barn
into a new piece of furniture,
said Ferrara. Our two newest
colors of Minwax Wood Finish
interior wood stain, Classic
Gray and Weathered Oak, play
into this trend well.
One of the most popular
trends in the exterior wood stains and deck category is the
growth of water-based formulations. This is an area Benjamin
Moore prides itself on, said Sheehan. Arborcoat has proven
to be a success time and time again. Another trend is maintenance. Homeowners are seeing the true benefit in maintaining
their exterior wood space and gaining longevity of the product
used. In terms of color we are seeing more and more decks
with a two-tone scheme. For example, the railing and deck
would be one color and the spindles a different color, which is
a great way to bring design to your outdoor space.
Another trend cited by wood coating manufacturers is the
increased use of outdoor spaces for entertaining.
We believe the driving force behind wood coatings is the
fact that the outdoor space is actually an extension of ones
home, said Lara Toomin, exterior stain project manager at

oatings World: What is

the mission of NACE?
Bob Chalker: The mission of NACE International is
to protect people, assets and the
environment from the effects of
corrosion. The organization, a
global nonprofit headquartered
in Texas, was established in
1943 by eleven corrosion engineers from the pipeline industry
as the National Association
Chalker
of Corrosion Engineers. The
founding engineers were originally part of a regional group
formed in the 1930s when the study of cathodic protection
was introduced. Since then, NACE International has become
the global leader in developing corrosion prevention and
control standards, certification and education. The members
of NACE International still include engineers, and also numerous other professionals working in a range of areas related to corrosion control. Today NACE international serves
nearly 30,000 members in 116 countries and has offices in
the U.S., China, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
CW: What services does NACE provide to its members?
Chalker: If you have a career in any subject area, you have
to look around and ask what organization can help me
with my job or with my career? NACE is that organization,

for anyone in the corrosion control industry. NACE offers several membership options at individual and corporate levels. Individual members receive benefits which build
their skills and credentials in the industry, including free
downloads of valuable NACE standards and thousands of
technical papers, subscriptions to NACE publications, networking opportunities, leadership opportunities on hundreds of committees, discounts on training, conferences and
certification renewals and more. Corporate members receive
similar benefits for employees as well as numerous opportunities for brand exposure throughout the year and customized training programs.
CW: What are the major industries concerned with corrosion control and what are the key issues they face?
Chalker: Major industry sectors impacted by corrosion include infrastructure, utilities, transportation, production
and manufacturing and government. Everything from residential piping to bridges to defense assets are at risk of corroding and there are different ways to prevent and control
corrosion of those assets. Maintenance is a key factor because often it costs less to control corrosion than it costs to

coatings tomorrow, will examine what advanced polymer

and science have in store for future coatings systems.
Eleven pre-congress tutorials will familiarize attendees with the basics of major coatings technologies. Experts
from both industry and academia will discuss the basic concepts and chemistries involved and introduce the latest research findings in their respective coatings area. Topics will
include marine coatings, epoxy coatings, film formation in
latex paints, sustainable technologies, adhesives and sealants,
functional coatings, polyurethanes, easy-to-clean coatings,
architectural coatings, corrosion fundamentals and flame retardants fundamentals. The congress will also feature poster
sessions and presentation of the European Coatings Award.

Keynote Speakers
The congress will commence with two keynote speakers.
Aditay Ranade of Lux Research, Inc., who will discuss ways
of assessing sustainability in the field of architectural coatings. According to Ranade, architectural coatings consume
significant amounts of energy, water and petrochemicals
during manufacture, and can negatively impact occupants
health and the environment by releasing harmful chemicals.
Sustainable coatings technologies reduce the impact of
paints and coatings on energy consumption, resource depletion, and the environment, but often get confused with greenwashed unsustainable alternatives. In this presentation,
Ranade will reveal a tool for assessing the true sustainability value of established and emerging coatings technologies,
and assess the sustainability value relative to the performance value to the end user.
Klemens Bartmann will discuss Sustainable and functional coatings challenges and opportunities in the
second keynote speech. According to Bartmann, coatings
in state-of-the-art applications have to meet manifold requirements. Not only must they provide protection for all

Coatings, Ink Industries Mourn Charles Hoover III

By David Savastano
Ink World Editor

harles E. (Chuck) Hoover III, president

of Hoover Color, passed away at his
home in Blacksburg, VA, on Jan. 17,
2013, just shy of his 78th birthday.
Chuck, as he was known to friends and
family, was born in Flushing, NY to the late
Charles E. Hoover Jr. and Jessie Heerlein
Hoover, and grew up in Maplewood, NJ. It
Hoover
was there that he met and married his wife,
Diane Schueler Hoover. A graduate of Albright College, Reading, PA, he was a co-captain of the Albright Lions football team.
After college, he joined the New Jersey National Guard, earning
the rank of second lieutenant.
Chuck joined the family company, Hoover Color, in 1954 and
became president in 1960. He held this post until his death. Mr.
and Mrs. Hoover moved to Short Hills, NJ in 1961, where they
raised their three children. They moved to Blacksburg in 1989.
His son, Charles E. (Chuck) Hoover V, recalled that his father
always told him that Business is the friends you make. When
people first heard this expression from my father, they sometimes were taken aback because it sounded a little manipulative.
But once you knew my father, the clearer the meaning was. The
expression has many meaning to us at Hoover Color.
His son went on to explain, In this day and age, if your
products are not of acceptable quality, you are not offering your
products at a competitive price or if you are not providing acceptable service, your products will not even be considered. So
if you and your competitor are selling similar products at similar prices, who does the customer buy from? He buys from the
friend he has learned to trust.
My father also used the expression to define his feeling
about work. A truly successful person is one who has incorporated work into his life. If the people you work with are your friends
and you get satisfaction from the work itself, you will be happy in
life, his son added about his dad.
Mr. Hoover had a keen sense of business, and was able to
revamp the family business as times changed.
From a business point of view, his biggest accomplishment
was being able to transform Hoover Color as market demands

changed, Charles Hoover Vsaid. When he joined the business

in 1954, there was no colorant business. My great-grandfather
had been in the paint business and had built Hoover Color as a
custom pigment blender, making the exact color people needed.
As the colorant business evolved in the 1960s and 1970s,
the need for custom pigment blends shrank,he added. In his
1970 acquisition of the facility in Virginia, my father transformed
Hoover Color from a pigment blending company to being a
primary manufacturer. He was also very good at getting people
to reach a consensus, and helped the pigment industry work
together during his tenure as president of the Color Pigment
Manufacturers Association (CPMA).
When not at work Chuck enjoyed traveling, football and puttering around when not at work. He was an avid skier and loved
to ski at their homes in Vermont and Colorado with his family
and friends; his family noted that Mr. Hoover departed this world
as the first big snowstorm of the year blanketed Blacksburg.
Daniel Canavan Sr., president and CEO for D. B. Becker Co.,
Inc., knew Mr. Hoover for nearly 25 years, and said he was both a
leader and a gentleman.
Chuck was a gentlemen in the truest sense of the word, and
I doubt if there are many men in our chemical industry who possess his depth and knowledge and his high regard for others,
Mr. Canavan said. Chuck Hoover was a leader in the development of inorganic pigments for usage in paints, inks, coatings,
sealants, plastics, construction-concrete, artist paints and colors.
Chuck was genuine, Mr. Canavan added. There was nothing artificial because it came from the heart. Chuck will be greatly missed, as the industry has lost a a man of great leadership
and conviction to our industry.
Charles Hoover V said that he has received numerous condolence notes over the passing of his father, as he touched so
many lives.
In many of the condolence notes that Ive received from
my fathers business friends, I heard one of my fathers expressions over and over again: Hoover Dumb Luck, his son noted.
As one friend said, this wasnt dumb at all. What it really was a
combination of preparation meeting opportunity, along with a
philosophy that everything comes with patience. My father felt
that luck sometimes needed to be nudged in the right direction,
but if you were prepared and patience, things had a way of falling into place.

February 2013

Ross has introduced the new Model

CDA-30C Portable Dual Shaft Mixer
with a working capacity of 10 to 30 gallons. An air/oil hydraulic lift raises and
lowers the agitators, a 3HP Two-Wing
Anchor and a 5HP high speed disperser.
Because each agitator is independently
controlled, the system is extremely versatile in terms of fine-tuning shear levels
and flow patterns over a wide viscosity range. Typical applications include
pastes, gels, suspensions, slurries and
other viscous dispersions.
The vacuum-rated mix can is jacketed for heating and cooling purposes. To ensure superior heat transfer,
hinged Teflon scrapers are attached to
the wings of the anchor agitator for
wiping the sidewalls and cone-shaped
vessel bottom. A Type J thermoprobe
installed on the mixer cover extends to
the center of the batch for highly accurate temperature monitoring.
Temperature, speeds, vacuum level
and other readouts are located in the
NEMA 4X Purged Operator Control
Panel. The CDA-30C is mounted on a
stainless steel support frame with locking casters designed for complete portability and stability when in use.

Troy Introduces Troysol

382 Wetting Additive for
Surface Tension Reduction
Troy Corporation recently introduced Troysol 382, a multifunctional,
silicone-free wetting additive that
promotes strong dynamic surface tension reduction in aqueous systems,

resulting in excellent wetting and application characteristics, according to

the company.
The use of Troysol 382 also promotes
foam reduction and the elimination of
surface defects, such as cratering, crawling and fisheyes. Representing a direct
response to the needs of industry, the new
performance wetting additive offers manufacturers of coatings, inks and adhesives
the ability to improve high speed application properties and gives them the flexibility to incorporate the product at any
stage of the production process.

a dry grinding SD-50 Attritor for a customer in the advanced ceramics industry. The SD-50 dry grinding Attritor
was designed with a special two-piece
cover with brush seal for dust control.
The Attritor was fabricated with custom cover connections, which allow
the mill to easily interface with the customers dry material conveying system,
according to the firm.
The SD-50 Attritor features a 304 SS
grinding tank which is jacketed for cooling to aid in temperature control during the dry milling process. The mill is
powered by an explosion-proof 50 HP
high-starting torque motor. The system
includes a dual meter station that displays RPM and amperage all mounted
on the Attritor in a NEMA 7/9 enclosure.
The Attritor is also mounted on a custom
designed frame riser, which allows the
processed material to be discharged into
containers for final packaging.

can be used in water-based formulations of paint and other dispersions.

The new product, EcoCare ASA, is
based entirely on vegetable based materials. ASA is an effectives grinding
aid and dispersant. ASA also acts as an
anti-settling compound that facilitates
improved remixing. This unique chemistry suppresses foam and will eliminate the need for additional antifoams
in some formulations, according to the
company. It also acts as a surfactant to
facilitate spread and penetration onto
dry surfaces.
EcoCare ASA is non-VOC. EcoCare
ASA is the most recent addition to the
EcoCare family of products developed
from plant and vegetable material
streams. MCLLC has developed proprietary methods to make chemicals from
vegetables and animal byproducts.

Imerys Launches
ImExtend14CCL Ultra-fine
Calcium Carbonate for
Powder Coatings
Imerys
Minerals
has
launched
ImExtend 14CCL, a new ultra-fine
calcium carbonate developed for the
powder coatings market. ImExtend
14CCL is an addition to the ImExtend
brand family. This new product has
been developed for formulators and
manufacturers of powder coatings
for household appliances. It enables
potential savings of titanium dioxide
(TiO2) with no negative effect on other
properties such flow rate and hardness,
according to the company.
A study conducted by the Powder
Coating Research Group (PCR), demonstrated that ImExtend 14CCL has
shown good results as a titanium dioxide extender. The research found that a
substitution of up to 20 percent in the
volume of TiO2 with ImExtend 14CCL
was possible without loss of opacity
and it had minimal impact on other
performances. CW
