1)

Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The film Persepolis is unique. The film is the adaption of an autobiographical graphic novel
written by Marjane Satrapi. Satrapi also directed the film. The film is almost a shot for shot
telling of the graphic novel. The film is mostly told in black and white, the places where there is
color it is selectively used for artistic purposes. The film uses the colors black and white to add to
the storytelling. The way the film uses the black and white is very clever. There are certain shots
where the whole screen is black, except for the characters face. The view is then forced to look at
what is not black, it was a smart decision in the story telling of this film.
2) Find a related article and summarize the content.
The article I found talks about the director and writer, Marjane Satrapi, and her new movie The
Voices. The movie is a dark horror comedy. It follows a man whose pet tells him to kill people.
The article talks about the huge difference in the two of Satrapis films. It talks about how much
of change it is from Persepolis. The article talks about Satrapi and her life growing up and how
the movie and graphic novels are autobiographical.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.
The article talks about how different the two films of Satrapi are. The two films are very unique
stories, and they both use sound very uniquely. Persepolis is an animated film, using sound is
key to what makes the film move forward. Without the sound in Persepolis the film would be
silent. Both films use voice acting. Persepolis is all done through voice acting and sound editing.
While The Voices use a voice actor, Ryan Reynold having multiple parts in the film, for the
voices of the talking animals. It is very unique because Reynolds uses a few different accents for
the different animals. Sound is very important to both of these films, even though they are so
categorically and narratively different.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the
screening, class discussions, text material and the article.
The film Persepolis had so many layers. It was a great coming of age story for a girl from a
different part of the world. The film told the story of Marjane. The film is mostly in black and
white, only a few scenes are in color. This was a strategic way to get the viewer to focus on
certain things. When the whole scene is black, except for the face of Marjane, the viewers eye is
drawn to the face of Marjane and forced to look at the expression on her face. It is very clever of
the film makers because it gets the audience to look somewhere without doing much. The sound
in the film also does a great job of storytelling. Since the film is animated, it uses voice actors to
get the characters to speak. This is a very difficult task for the actor because they can only use
their voice to convey how their character is feeling. The other sounds that are used for the film
were also integral to the story telling. The times of war, the bombs dropping and gunfire show
how horrible war can be. This film was fantastic because it used sound editing and mixing to tell
a story, and it also used the lack of color to tell a story in simple animation. This film get the
viewer to feel something with simple touches that is why this is a great film.
