This article discusses Indonesia Mengajar, a new program that sends recent Indonesian graduates to teach in remote, impoverished villages. It profiles two teachers, Rahmat Danu Andika and Granasti Aprilia, who teach in villages that previously had little access to education. Andika teaches in Desa Pelita, where the villagers rely on fishing but lack electricity and outside information. Aprilia teaches elementary students in Tulang Bawang, where the school is difficult to access and villagers saw little value in education. The founder of Indonesia Mengajar hopes the program will improve living standards in these villages by bringing education, acting as role models, and inspiring hope for the future.
