(b) The demand for a particular product is continuous and shows the following
probability distribution:

Find out the optimum stock level if the cost of shortage is Rs. 40 perunit and
cost of holding is Rs. 10 per unit. The shortage cost is proportatonal to both

4. Explain M.R.P. with a suitable example. Write a short notes on optimal Replen-
ishment system.

5. On an average 96 patients per 24 hour day require the service of an emergency clinic.
Also on an average, a patient requires 10 minutes of active attention. Assume that
the facility can handle only one emergency at a time. Suppose that it costs the clinic
Rs.100/- per patient treated to obtain an average servicing time of 10 minutes, and
that each minute of decrease in this average time would cost Rs.10/- per patient
treated. How much would have to be budgeted by the clinic to decrease the average
size of the queue from 1 1/3 patients to 1/2 a patient. [16]

1. (a) What are various phases of O. R. problem? Explain them briefly? [6]
(b) A toy manufacturer produces two types of dolls: a basic version doll A and
a deluxe version doll B. Each doll of type B takes as long to produce as one
doll of type A. The company have time to make a maximum of 2000 dolls per
day and each type requires equal amount of it. The deluxe version, i.e. type
B requires a fancy dress of which there are only 600 per day available. If the
company makes a profit of Rs. 30 and Rs. 50 per doll, respectively on doll A
and B; how many of each should be produced per day in order to maximize
profit? Solve it by graphic method. [10]

2. (a) What is a non - linear programming problem? Give two examples of NLPP
stating clearly why do you so classify them? [10]
(b) Give canonical form of non - linear programming problem. [6]

3. (a) Describe the basic characteristics of inventory system. [4]


(b) A company has a demand of 12,000 units/year for an item and it can produce
2000 such items per month. The cost of one setup is Rs. 400 and the holding
cost / unit/ month is Rs. 0.15. Find the optimum lot size and the total
cost per year, assuming the cost of 1 unit as Rs. 4. Also, find the maximum
inventory. [12]

4. (a) Explain fixed order quantity system. [8]


(b) What are the characteristics of two - bin system. [8]

5. Repairing a certain type of machine which breaks down in a given factory consists
of 5 basic steps that must be performed sequentially. The time taken to perform
each of the 5 steps is found to have an exponential distribution with mean 5 minutes
and is independent of other steps. If these machines breakdown in poisson fashion
at an average rate of two per hour and if there is only one repairman, what is the
average idle time for each machine that has broken down? [16]

6. A company in the business of manufacturing equipments for chemical industry has


taken up an order. The work to execute the order comprise following set of activi-
ties with time indicated against each.

4. Describe various selective inventory management techniques. Explain how these

5. A super market has two girls serving at the counters. The customers arrive in
poisson fashion at the rate of 12 per hour. The service time for each customer is
exponential with mean 6 minutes. Find

(a) The probability that an arriving customer has to wait for service.

(c) The average time spent by a customer in the super-market. [16]

3. (a) What is meant by inventory? Give the classification of different inventory

(b) ABC manufacturing company purchase 9,000 parts of a machine for its annual
requirement, ordering one month’s usage at a time. Each part costs Rs. 20.
The ordering cost per order is Rs. 15, and the carrying charges are 15% of the
average inventory per year.
You have been asked to suggest a more economical purchasing policy for the
company. What advice would you offer and how much would it save the
company per year? [10]

4. ABC analysis is a very useful approach for selective inventory control but has
some major limitations. Do you agree with this statement? Explain how these
limitations, if any, can be removed. [16]

5. At a railway station, only one train is handled at a time. The railway yard is
sufficient only for two trains to wait while others is given signal to leave the station.
Trains arrive at the station at an average rate of 6 per hour and the railway station
can handle them on an average of 12 per hour. Assuming poisson arrivals and
exponential service distribution, find the steady-state probabilities for the various
number of trains in the system. Also find the average waiting time of a new train
coming into the yard. [16]

6. (a) Explain PERT and its importance in network analysis. What are the require-
ments for applications of PERT techniques. [10]
(b) List at the differences between PERT and CPM [6]

7. Discuss various factors to be considered during the selection of simulation software.

8. Records pertaining to the monthly number of job-related injuries at an under-


ground coalmine were being studied by a federal agency. The values for the past
100 months were as follows:
