ML9850 H2S
Ultra High Sensitive Hydrogen Sulphide Monitor
WHAT DOES IT MONITOR?
With the smell of rotten eggs, hydrogen
sulphide (H2S) and other types of "reduced
sulphur compounds" are key constituents of
many odours. The ML9850 H2S/TRS system
has a detection limit of 1 part per billion which
is approximately 5 times more sensitive than
the human nose and can quickly respond to
increases in H2S levels that may be ignored
by some other techniques. As a continuous
real time analyser any increases in
concentration will also be rapidly detected
and recorded.
This combination of fast response time and
low detection limit benefits the user as it
enables any increase in H2S concentration to
be quickly detected before becoming a
nuisance or a problem.
CAN THE LOCATION OF THE ODOUR
BE IDENTIFIED?
The H2S monitoring system can also be
used in conjunction with Casella ETi's
meteorological sensors and software to
produce "pollution roses" that combine wind
direction with an air pollution concentration.
The directional component of the pollution
rose then helps to identity the direction from
which any potential pollutant is emanating.
This technique will be of benefit on large sites
where several potential sources of hydrogen
sulphide could exist.

The Model 1000 Thermal Oxidiser's average

converter efficiency is greater than 95% and
has a programmable microprocessor to
accurately control the temperature at which
the instruments oven is held. Oven
temperature and set point are also digitally
displayed on the instrument.
HOW IS IT LOCATED?
The system would normally be housed
in a small airconditioned vandal proof
environmental enclosure that can be
discretely located either on site or in
a sensitive area.
All data from the instrument can be
automatically and routinely accessed via a
landline or GSM modem with Casella ETi's
data management software.

IS THE SYSTEM RELIABLE AND ACCURATE?

The key to the performance of the H2S
monitoring system is ML9850 SO2 ambient
air quality analyser. This internationally
approved analyser benefits the customer by
maintaining excellent baseline stability and
reliable performance.
The system is able to perform automatic
daily zero and span checks ensuring that
reliable data is always available. With a
detection limit of 1 part per billion (when
used with the Model 1000) the ML 9850 is
designed specifically for low level ambient
measurement and when installed with the
thermal oxidiser the system forms a high
performance combination for trace level
H2S or total reduced sulphur, monitoring.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The system works by combining the ML9850
sulphur dioxide analyser with the Model 1000
Thermal Oxidiser. The oxidiser's functions are
twofold. Firstly it chemically removes any SO2
from the incoming sample ensuring that the
only residual sulphur compounds remaining
are "reduced sulphurs" the collective name for
the range of odour generating sulphur based
compounds.
Secondly, the oxidiser can then be
programmed either to run at one temperature
to convert any hydrogen sulphide present to
SO2 or at a higher temperature to convert the
total reduced sulphur (TRS) to SO2. The
converted SO2 is then fed directly into
Casella ETi's high performance Model 9850
SO2 analyser to produce a direct reading of
either the H2S or TRS concentration in the
sample gas.
