1. (a) Obtain an expression for the force on the inclined plate moving in the direction
of the jet . Also get the expression for the work done per second by the jet on
the plate.
(b) A jet of water moving at 12 m/s impinges on a concave shaped vane to deflect
the jet through 1200 when stationary. If the vane is moving at 5m/s, find
the angle of jet so that there is no shock at inlet. Also compute the absolute
velocity of jet at exit both in magnitude and direction and the work done per
second per N of water. Assume that the vane is smooth. [6+10]

2. A Francis turbine is working under a head of 100m and the discharge is 2m3 /s.
The velocity of flow, assumed constant through the runner is 16m/sec. The runner
blade angle at inlet is 900 , the width of the blade at inlet is 0.15 times the diameter
at inlet and the outlet diameter is 0.6 times the inlet diameter. Calculate the outlet
angles of the guide and runner blades, wheel diameter and the hydraulic efficiency
when the wheel is rotating at 500 rpm and the discharge are axial. (Assume that
10% of the flow area is blocked by the finite thickness of the blades) [16]

3. A model of a Francis turbine one-fifth of full size, develops 30.8 KW at 305 rpm,
under a head of 2.5 m. Find the speed and power of full size turbine operating
under a head of 6 m. [16]

4. (a) Derive an expression for the discharge of water into and from air vessel fitted
to the delivery pipe of a single acting reciprocating pump.
(b) A double acting reciprocating pump, running at 60 r.p.m has a plunger diam-
eter of 250 mm and a stroke of 500mm. The delivery pipe is 100mm diameter
and 50 m long. If the motion of the pump is simple harmonic, find the power
required to overcome friction of the delivery pipe when no air vessel is fitted.
Assume f = 0.01 [8+8]

5. (a) What are the different components of a centrifugal pump? Show them with
the help of a neat sketch.
(b) What is the pressure at the eye of a centrifugal pump ? What is the limitation
on this pressure? [8+8]

6. (a) When will the dynamic similarity exist between model and prototype?
(b) Two geometrically similar pumps are to run at the same speed of 1100 rpm.
One of the pumps lifts 0.1 m3 /sec to a head of 16 m. Determine the head of
the other pump to lift half of the discharge. [8+8]

7. (a) Describe with neat sketch the working of a hydraulic press.
(b) A hydraulic press has diameter of ram 200 mm and of plunger 40 mm. It is
provided with a lever for applying force to the plunger. If the ratio of leverage
is 10, determine the weight lifted by the press, when the force applied to the
level is 100 N. [8+8]

8. (a) Write a note on the characteristics of a gear pump.


(b) Describe in short a vane type of pump. [8+8]

1. A jet of water 5 cm in diameter having a velocity of 20 m/s impinges tangentially


on a series of vanes, which when stationary deflect the jet through an angle of 1200 .
Calculate the magnitude of the resultant force on the vanes when they are
(a) Stationary
(b) Moving with a velocity of 10 m/s in the same direction as the jet. Also
determine the work done per second and the efficiency for the case (b). [16]
2. (a) What are guide vanes?
(b) Define flow ratio and speed ratio?
(c) What are the disadvantages of an outward flow turbine? [4+6+6]

i. Theoretical discharge in litres/min
ii. Coefficient of discharge

5. (a) Draw the outlet velocity triangle for back ward curved vane of a centrifugal
pump.
(b) Explain the working of a centrifugal pump with the help of a neat sketch[8+8]
6. (a) What are necessary conditions for complete similarity to exist between model
and prototype.
(b) What is specific speed of a centrifugal pump? What is its use? [8+8]

1. (a) Obtain an expression for the force exerted by a jet of water on an unsymmet-
rical moving curved plate when the jet strikes tangentially at one of the lips.
Sketch the velocity triangles at inlet and at outlet.
(b) A jet of water moving at 20 m/s impinges on a symmetrical curved vane
shaped to deflect the jet through 1200 . If the vane is moving at 5 m/s, find
the angle of the jet so that there is no shock at inlet. Also determine the
absolute velocity at exit in magnitude and direction and the work done.[8+8]
2. A double overhung Pelton wheel is coupled to an electric generator producing 40
MW under an effective head of 400 m. Estimate the jet diameter mean diameter
of the runner, synchronous speed and specific speed when the generator efficiency
is 95%, hydraulic efficiency 85%, Cv = 0.97, speed ratio = 0.46 and jet ratio = 12.

4. (a) Differentiate between
i. A single acting and double acting reciprocating pumps
ii. A single cylinder and double cylinder reciprocating pumps.
(b) A double acting reciprocating pump running at 50r.p.m is discharging 900
litres of water per minute. The pump has a stroke of 400 mm. The diameter of
piston is 250 mm. The delivery and suction heads are 25m and 4m respectively.
Find the slip of the pump and power required to drive the pump. [8+8]
5. (a) What are the mechanical losses in the working of a centrifugal pump?
(b) The impeller of a centrifugal pump has outer diameter of 40 cm and inner
diameter of 20 cm. The blade angle at outlet is 300 . The speed of the impeller
is 1450 rpm. The velocity of flow at inlet and out let is same at 2.2 m/ sec.
Find head developed if manometric efficiency is 75%, absolute velocity at out
let and blade angle at inlet. [8+8]
6. (a) What are the common problems associated with the working of a centrifugal
pump ? What are their remedial measures?
(b) What are the similarity laws? What is the significance of each law? [8+8]
7. (a) Enumerate the types of accumulators and sketch and explain the working of
one of them.

(b) What load would be necessary to produce an intensity of pressure of 700 Kpa,
if the diameters of two rams of a differential hydraulic accumulator are 70 and
80 mm respectively. Neglect friction. [8+8]

(b) What is the effect of change in speed and temperature of liquid in case of a
gear pump? [8+8]
