DESIGN PROJECT #5: Parking Structure

DUE WEDNESDAY APR 8
The project is to design a parking structure for 500 600 cars.
The purpose of this project is to learn about:
Precast concrete construction
Coordinating structural geometry with space planning
Given:
The structure should fit on a footprint 200 x 240. These are maximum dimensions; anything
less and reasonable is fine.
The structure should be 2 4 levels tall.
Procedure:
Download Parking Structures: Recommended Practice for Design and Construction, by PCI.
http://www.fpcaweb.org/notebook/recommended_practices.pdf
Youll mainly be using parts of Chapter 2 and Chapter 4. Theres a lot of other information you
can ignore.
Also refer to span load and depth to span tables in lecture 15
There are other sources on the web which you are free to consult, but this is the best source.
Design the layout in plan. The important thing is to coordinate the parking dimensions (correct
size of spaces, correct aisle widths) with the structural dimensions (location of columns).
Determine the type of floor system and design the structure in section. Use reasonable spans,
and reasonable depths based on those spans.
Notes:
You do not need to design the exterior.
You only need to design one typical floor plan (middle level). Assume other floor plans are
identical. You may ignore special requirements for the ground level (entering/exiting).
You do not need to design stairs and elevators in detail. Simply give them a reasonable amount
of space and locate them in the plan as rectangles.
You do not need to design the lateral structural system (shear walls, light walls, k bracing, etc.).
Just columns, beams, and floors.

REQUIREMENTS
A typical architectural floor plan, showing parking layout. Show columns and major dimensions.
List the total number of parking spaces.
A typical structural floor plan, showing columns, beams and floor members. Show gridlines and
major dimensions.
A section of the whole building. Show major dimensions.
A detail section of a single interior column from floor to floor. Show how the column supports
the floor. Label the structural pieces. Show dimensions for: floor to floor height, floor to ceiling
height.
(As always, make sure your plans & sections match each other.)

SAMPLE SOLUTION
This shows the kind of drawing and the level of detail that is expected.
Note: this solution does not fit on the site youve been given.

SAMPLE SOLUTION: Architectural Floor Plan

Note: This has a little more detail than needed. You dont need to indicate shear walls or drain locations.
The dimensions are good.

SAMPLE SOLUTION: Structural Floor Plan

Note: This has a little more detail than needed. You dont need to indicate shear walls or conduit lines or
to include numbers with the columns.

SAMPLE SOLUTION: Section

Note: This has the right amount of detail but you should add dimensions. You do not need to design
foundations. Either cut through a row of columns to show them in section, or show them in the
background as in this example.

SAMPLE SOLUTION: Detail Section

Note: This has the right amount of detail but yours should be taller, extending down to the floor below.
Show dimensions for: floor to floor height, floor to ceiling height, depth of floor.
