Create a variety of logos to choose from.
I drew inspiration from retro logos as well
as from guitar and amp manufacturers
logos. From my sketches, I began
searching for a variety of fonts that
would give me the look and feel of a
throwback rock band.

A two-sided folded document with logo.
For my personal logo, I wanted it to
reflect my skill as well as include my
initials. Its a rather simple logo and uses
basic circles and rectangles. I wanted
to make the front page shorter than
the space underneath so that the bass
would show up on both surfaces. Rather
than use flat colors for the background,
I opted for a simple rust colored photo
and then a more busy similarly colored
background for the back page. My
content didnt need to be in a specific
order so I took advantage of that and
made all of my content asymmetrical. Its
a bit chaotic but the effect lends itself to
the attitude of rock music.

Create a business card with stationary.
For this project, I kept everything
very simple. I drew inspiration from a
wallpaper that I had that resembled a
computer board. The rounded rectangle
resembles a computer chip and the
lines are the connections to other
components. I used the pathfinder tool
to cut the text out of the shape so that
the design is visible inside the text.

Make matching stationary and card.
Very simply put, I used the exact same
design from the business card and placed
across the top of the stationary. I also
added a watermark to echo the back of
my business card.

Use an image I took in a color scheme.
I used Photoshop to create a cutout of
my photo of the bass. Once cutout, I was
able to adjust the levels and saturation
to get a pretty close color to the green I
used in my color scheme. The rest of the
design is made up of overlapping circles.
One challenge I faced in my early
designs is that the bass felt small and
underwhelming. To make it seem bigger,
I made the bass fall off the page in the
bottom. Rather than show the entire
bass, the implied lines outside the
bounds of the page make it seem more
interesting.

Demonstrate color scheme in CSS.
I knew from the beginning, based on
my logo, that I wanted a very flat look
to my web page. Once I had the copy
finished, I styled everything as minimally
as possible. No rounded corners, no extra
borders, and no frills. Nothing fancy here.
I opted for a single Sans Serif font and
only three colors.

Use the brush tool to mask images.
I began this project with the quote and
designed around that. Firstly, I chose
a blue color scheme that felt serene.
I found an ink image that looked nice
and used it for my background. I then
used an image of a woman meditating
by the ocean which both reinforced
my peaceful message and fit with my
color scheme. I masked out the woman
in the photo to blend and disappear
into the background. I wanted it to feel
translucent. Next, I arranged my text
to emphasize the word peace. At this
point, I found that my background was a
bit to sharp so i used a Gaussian blur to
create a more dreamy effect.

Learn to use Word as a design tool.
The design began from a scan of a
Fender owners manual. I angled the
two boxes to create an energetic and
dynamic design.
The original image I scanned was black
and white, so in order to color it, I made
the image transparent and placed a
colored block behind it. The top and
bottom are complimentary colors (blue
and orange) and also have a subtle
gradient that draws the eye toward
the center of the poster. The main
background is a light gray which makes
the page less harsh to look at but also
contrasts well with the black text.

Consider placement and alignment.
The greatest challenge of this design
was the text wrap around the circular
image. This effect was created using two
utilities. First, a square image was pasted
in a round frame. (You can see how this
simple effect is done here: http://helpx.
adobe.com/indesign/using/framesobjects.html) Secondly, a textwrap was
applied to the image. Extra padding was
also applied to ensure that the text was
no too close to the image. Great care
was taken to make sure that the top and
bottom of the image and the text was
aligned. This required a good deal of
adjusting the font size and the tracking
as well as resizing the image itself.

make a flashy and interesting poster that
showed the teachers and all the relevant
information that potential students may
ask.
