Once more our celebration of Christs resurrection renews our rebirth into the life of God. You
should notice that every Easter Sunday we renew our baptismal promises then we are sprinkled with
the holy water that was blessed during the Easter Vigil. It is because the resurrection of Jesus and
the baptism we received are inseparable. The Letter of Paul to the Colossians centers on Baptism.
He says: "When you were buried with Christ in Baptism, you were also raised with him." The
symbolism of being "buried with Christ" at Baptism, by going down into the water, we "die" to one
way of living. At parishes that have a baptismal pool, they practice the immersion of the person
baptized and it expresses more fully that the baptized are "buried with Christ in Baptism." The
second phrase should catch our attention: "When you were buried with Christ in Baptism, you were
also raised with him." Saint Paul doesn't say that because of Baptism "you will be raised with
Christ" at the end of your life. It's in the past tense: "you were raised with Christ." He goes on to say,
"God brought you to life along with him." Now think about that. When Jesus died, God brought
Him to a new life - a transformed, risen, human life. Paul says that we have received this same life.
This is the Good News of the Resurrection of our Lord: The resurrection isn't an event that
simply happened to Christ. The resurrection isn't simply something we look forward to
when we die. Saint Paul is saying that the resurrection of Christ affects us right now. We
are enfolded into the life of the risen Christ now!

(Cont.d from last week) Simon had to sell his merchandise and
return home to his family. They dragged him to the procession and
their raised whips convinced him to lift the heavy cross lying on the
ground. The weakened man slowly and painfully rose from the
ground and said, Thank you, Simon. How did he know his name,
Simon thought? The bruised man spoke again, You must help me,
Simon, to carry this cross to Calvary. And so the man, Simon of
Cyrene, went to market one day and ended up helping the Savior of
the world carry His Cross to Golgotha. Like Saul of Tarsus (Paul),
Simon, too, was taken by force. His eyes met Jesus eyes as he reached
to raise the Cross.
Simon is a Jewish name, but what about Cyrene? It was the capital
city of the Roman colony, which today would be modern Libya. He
was surely one of the first witnesses to the Crucifixion and the
Resurrection. (Acts l:2l-22) His rough hands lifted the Cross that bore
the Redeemer of the World. They were surely stained with His
Precious Blood as they trudged toward Calvary. He stood at the foot
of the cross and heard the words of Christ spoken in unbelievable
agony. Simon saw the heavens grow dark and lightning split the
clouds and heard the peal of thunder as the centurion confessed,
Surely this man was the Son of God. He felt the earth tremble as
Jesus breathed his last. Simon had two sons, Rufus and Alexander.
(Mark 15:21) and they both became bishops in the early church. His
wife turns up in Rome, according to St. Paul. (Romans 16:13)
