AboutNikonAdvanced
Focusing
ScreenDisplay
The new Nikon Advanced Focusing Screen Display of the N80/N80QD employs the
convenientVari-BriteFocus Area display system; it enables clear display of the focus
brackets at the selected focus area in the viewfinderfor easy identification. When the finder
image is bright, the focus brackets are displayed in black and when the finder image is
dark, the focus brackets are momentarilyilluminatedin red. The selected focus area can be
identifiedeasily in both bright and dark conditions with this function (page 72).
Also, the new Nikon Advanced Focusing Screen Display allows the superimpositionof OnDemand Grid Lines. The grid lines can be displayed by using Custom Setting Menu #4
(page 71). These grids assist you in composing the frame, in taking landscape pictures or in
shifting/tiltingPC-Nikkorlenses.
* Dueto characteristics
of the LCD used in the Vari-BriteFocusAreadisplaysystem,a thin line
outsidethe selectedfocus areamay also be displayedor the entireviewfindermay be
illuminatedin red undercertainconditions.Theseare not malfunctions.

AboutLCD
The LCD panel and viewfinder displays tend to turn darker at high temperaturesand slower
responsetime at low temperatures. On the other hand, the LCD in the Nikon Advanced
Focusing Screen Display tends to turn lighter at high temperaturesand darker with slower
responsetime at low temperatures. In either case, when the temperaturereturns to normal,
the displays also return to normal.

ffinnetering
As the proper combinationof shutterspeed and aperturefor correct
exposureis determinedaccordingto subjectbrightnessand film
sensitivity,measuringsubject brightnessis very important.
In general,brightnessinsidethe viewfinderis not uniform.The N80/
N80QDprovidesthree meteringsystems:Matrix Metering, GenterWeighted Metering and Spot Metering. With Matrix Metering, scene
brightnessdata is detected by the 1O-segmentMatrix sensor. With
Center-WeightedMetering, most of the meter'ssensitivityis
concentratedon the 12mm-diametercentercirclein the viewfinder.Spot
Metering sensitivityis concentratedin a small, selectedfocus areafrom
five availablefocus areas.Using D- or G-type Nikkorlenses,the
N80/N80QDcamera performs3D Matrix Meteringby adding distance
informationto determinecorrect exposure.See page 48.

Shutterspeed and aperturecontrolhow much light reachesthe film. The

providedby the N80/N80QD'sfour exposuremodes: Auto-Multi

About
Depth
of FleldandFocus
Tracking
This camerais equippedwith autofocuswherefocusingis
automaticallyexecutedby the camera.Basics of the relationship
betweenfocus and depth of field and Focus Trackingare
explainedin this section.

I Depth of field
Whenfocusing, depth of field should be considered.Depth of field is the
zone of sharpestfocus in front of and behindthe subjecton which the
lens is focused.lt variesaccordingto shootingdistance, focal lengthand,
aboveall, aperture.Smallerapertures(largerf-numbers)will producea
deeperdepth of field wherethe backgroundand foregroundbecome
sharper;largerapertures(smallerf-numbers)will producea shallower
depth of field wherethe backgroundbecomesblurred.Similarly,shorter
shootingdistanceor longerfocal lengthwill producea shallowerdepth of
field,and longershootingdistanceor shorterfocal lengthwill producea
deeperdepth of field. Note that depth of field tends to be shallowerin
front of and deeperbehindthe subjectin focus.

f Focus Tracking
When the focus mode selectoris set to SingleServoAF (S)or Continuous
ServoAF (C) and the shutterreleasebutton is lightlypressedor AE-VAFL button (whenAF start in CSM I i is selected)is kept pressed, the
cameraautomaticallyswitchesto FocusTrackingwhen a movingsubject
is detected.FocusTrackingenablesthe camerato analyzethe speed of
the movingsubjectaccordingto the focus data detected, and to obtain
correctfocus by anticipatingthe subject'sposition-and drivingthe lens
to that position-at the exact moment of exposure.
In SingleServoAF,FocusTrackingis activatedwith a subjectthat has
been moving in advanceto the focus detection, and focus is locked when
the subjectstops movingand O appearsin the viewfinder. In Continuous
ServoAF,camera continuesto track subject(evenwith a subjectwhich
startedmoving in the middleof the focus detection)and focus is not
locked.

with the MB-16.)

Eyepiece correction lenses

. Eyepiececorrection lenses enable near- or far-sightedphotographersto adjust
the eyepiecediopter to suit their vision, and can be attached easily by inserting
onto the viewfindereyepiece.Nine optional eyepiececorrection lenses provide
viewfinderdioptersettingsof -5, -4, -3, -2, O,+0.5, +1, +2 and +3m-1(combined
diopter with setting on camera body). We recommendthat you actually look
through the vievyfinderwith various correction lenses attached before making a
purchase, since viewfinderdiopter differs from one person to another.Use the
optional eyepiececorrection lens when you need eyepiececorrection over -1.8
to +0.8m-1that can be adjustedusing the N80/NB0QD'sdiopter adjustmentlever.

Lenses

. A wide varietyof lenses- 14mm to 600mm wideangle,telephoto,zoom, Micro
