TENSILE TEST
Your lab report should be typed with a font of 12 and have the different sections clearly
labeled. It is important to follow the lab report format given in this document. If the
format is not followed 10% of your score will be deducted.
When you finish writing this report you should have learned about Tensile Test. A quiz
will be given when you turn in your lab report. You should know the following:

What is tensile test and why it is done.

True stress and strain. Equations and definition of terms
Engineering stress and strain. Equations and definition of terms
Elastic deformation
Plastic deformation
Yield strength
Tensile strength
Breaking strength
Rupture load & Rupture strength
Necking
Work hardening and why it is important
Modulus of elasticity, Equation and definition of terms
Modulus of resilience
Ductility and how it is measured ( two ways)
Brittle fracture
Ductile fracture
Toughness

Your lab report should have the following sections:

COVER PAGE
Cover page should include the objective of the experiment and the following information
Your name & ID number
Instructors name
Course name and title
Name of the experiment
Date the experiment was performed.
Department

California State University, Long Beach

All of this information should be arranged nicely on the cover page. Remember your
cover page is the first thing that introduces you to the reader.(3points)
OBJECTIVE
Clearly state objectives of the experiment. Materials used in the experiment should also
be specified. Specify the heat treatment of each material.(4points)
1. PROCEDURE and LIST OF APPARATUS
A. In this section you should write about the procedure you followed in the lab. You
should mention how a tensile test is done .You should not write steps related to the
use of the software. ( 5 points)
B. List of apparatus
You should specify all the equipment used. YOU SHOULD SPECIFY BRAND &
MODEL. (2 points)
2. DATA & RESULTS
A. You should give original diameter and dimensions after fracture. The graph and data
table obtained during the experiment should be included in this section not at the end
of the report.
B. You should fill out the table given in the lab manual and put it in this section. Code
Marking and Rockwell Number is not given and you do not need to write them. You
have to calculate rupture load using rupture strength from the graph and the original
area. Rupture strength is the lowest point of the straight line at 3% strain.(10 points)
3. SAMPLE CALCULATIONS
A. In this section you should show how you calculated the amount of ductility, true
stress at fracture and modulus of resilience. You should specify which material you
are using for the sample calculation and show results for the other materials in the
table. ( 10 points)
4. DISCUSSION
Make a Table and compare values of tensile strength, yield strength, ductility, and
modulus of elasticity with published values and specify per cent of error. Discuss
different types of fracture seen in each specimen. Specify possible sources of error.
Compare ultimate tensile strength with true fracture strength. (10 points)
5. ANSWER TO INSTRUCTORS QUESTIONS

Answer questions on page 40 of the manual. Write down each question and leave a space
between each answer. If only one material is used, you do not need to answer the first
question.( 41 points)
Q1= 10 points Write down definition of each term and put the values in a Table
Q2=4 points
Q3=6 points Discuss the variation of load with deformation, yield point, and type of
fracture in each specimen
Q4=4 points
Q5= 4 points
Q6= This is already answered in the discussion section you do not need to repeat it.
Q7= 3 points Explain your result.
Q8=6 points
Q9 = 4points
6. RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSIONS
Give your recommendations on how to improve this experiment or what should be added.
Specify what you have learned from this experiment. Include types of fracture and yield
point in the different materials.( 10 points)
7. REFERENCES AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT (2 points)
Specify all the references that you have used. Make sure that you use correct and
consistent format.
