Richard A. Johnson, Miller & Freunds Probability and Statistics for Engineers, 7th Edition

Material and Topics Covered


Chapters 1 through 9 of the text will be covered. Topics include: Descriptive statistics, probability, discrete
random variables and probability distributions, continuous random variables and probability distributions, joint
distributions, sampling distributions, point estimation, confidence intervals, testing hypotheses.

Calculus Required
This course requires that you have taken at least one calculus course. Portions of this course depend on
calculus, specifically integration. I will not review basic integration skills.

You can access course information and important announcements on my website (address above) and on
Blackboard (blackboard.stonybrook.edu). Please check before each class for announcements like cancellations
due to weather or emergency, changes to exam dates, assignments and due dates, etc. Homework and exam scores
can be found on Blackboard. Teaching Assistant information will be posted on both sites when it is available.

Homework
Assignments will be given each week. Homework is due AT THE BEGI''I'G OF CLASS on its due date.
You must be in class and on time to submit your homework. No homework will be accepted via email. No late
homework will be accepted. Your lowest homework grade will be dropped before computing your average.

Exam 1: Tuesday, October 7, 2008


Exam 2: Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Final Exam: Given during the prescribed final exam period for our class, TBA.
Make-up exams will not be given. A student missing one of the first two exams will have the
other exam counted twice. All students must be present at the final exam.
The final exam will not be cumulative. It will be the same length as Exams 1 and 2 (1hr 15 min).

I cannot assign incomplete grades. Special circumstances warranting incompletes must be
discussed with the AMS Director of Undergraduate Studies before the final exam.
