The Kings of Hallyu Wave took the Philippines by storm when they held their concert in the
country last October 24, 2013. The fans of Super Junior, Everlasting Friends or ELF, flocked to
the Mall of Asia Arena to experience the Super Show 5.
As a fan, I could not pass up the golden opportunity to see my favorite artists perform live.
Given the fact that they, as a group, havent visited the country for 2 years, I grabbed the
chance to experience their explosive stages firsthand. Since Manila was only the 14th leg of the
concert tour, fans already had an idea of what they can expect from the concert. The setlist and
fan accounts from previous stops heightened my excitement. Fancams provided glimpses of the
concert. I knew that the feelings I felt when watching fancams will be multiplied a thousand more
when I experience the real thing. It is, without a doubt, every ELFs dream to be part of the
sapphire blue ocean and participate in fan projects and fanchants. SJ United, the main fanclub
in the country, even organized an ELF convention a month before the concert to build up the
hype.
It was also the first time that the Super Show in the country will be held in the MoA Arena
instead of the Araneta Coliseum. It was a bigger venue so more fans could come to the concert.
I always look forward to chances of meeting fellow ELF and sharing our fandom experiences. It
is heartwarming to be with people who share what youre passionate about. And although it
wasnt confirmed a week before the concert, ELF were expecting it to be Heechuls first concert
after being discharged from the army. It made the event even more special.
The main factor that urged me to go to the concert is my love for SuJu. I didnt want to miss this
concert because it may take a long time for this to happen again. The Php 9,100.00 VIP ticket
price I paid was worth saving (the fact that #iponing was trending that time when fans saved
money for the concert) and paying for. Also, I had to cut my class just to queue early before
tickets for the best sections ran out. The value I received in the concert exceeded my
expectations and justified the price and efforts I paid.
However, on the concert day itself, we experienced a few problems - one of which is the
queueing problem. The queue was disorganized because, unlike other concerts, there was no
reserved seating arrangements; thus, it resulted to an 8-hour queue outside the concert grounds
which made a lot of fans impatient. When it was time to enter, the queue was not followed which
resulted to the struggle of fans to get a perfect spot. To address this problem, the concert
facilitators should implement a queueing system that will allow for a smooth and fast entrance
flow. To avoid disgruntled fans on long waiting hours, they may give those in the queue a control
number that will indicate their priority in the line. This will help prevent disorganization and
conflicts when entering the concert grounds and will allow the fans to eat or go around the mall
while waiting. Another problem encountered was the late delivery of lightsticks that were
supposed to be received by the fans on the concert day. In fail safing the problem, the
organizers bought lightsticks from a local seller and distributed it to the fans. However, the pearl
sapphire blue lightsticks from Korea were received by the fans one month after the concert. The
organizers could have avoided this problem through effective supply chain communications with
the Korean suppliers.
