Site Analysis
On-site Considerations
Site Orientation
Dimensions, area and site boundaries.
Contours / levels and angle of slope.
Trees and other significant vegetation.
Buildings and any other notable features, landmarks or characteristics of the site.
Access points and easements.
On-site drainage and other services.
Geotechnical investigation type of soil, bearing capacity, water table, etc
Climatic Data and its architectural interpretation. Zonal and building bye laws.
Site Model.
Off-Site Considerations
Location and use of surrounding buildings.
Surrounding road networks, connectivity and traffic movement patterns.
Difference in levels between the site and surrounding properties.
Built form, scale and character or surrounding and nearby development.
Major and significant vegetation on surrounding properties.
Nallas, streams and other water bodies nearby.
Local building materials and construction technology used, if any.
Service layouts around the site.
Stage 3: Concept Design
This stage marks the beginning of the design process. The students have to express their ideas
generated on the basis of the studies (case studies / literature studies / area analysis) conducted so far
in the form of conceptual drawings, sketches and models. The emphasis during this stage should be on
the basic concept explaining the principal ideas / thought process / dream of the student for the project
in terms of planning / built form / massing of different components, leading to the design, through
sketches / 3D images / block models etc.
Submittals:

Site plan showing zoning of different activities (horizontal / vertical) and their interaction,
location of different building blocks, (in case of site planning oriented projects), along with
pedestrian / vehicular movement pattern. Proximity chart / bubble diagram for correlation of
different activities are also to be presented to show the base work for the site planning.
Schematic floor plans for all the buildings under the scope. This may be a single line plan
(with proper scale), showing layout of different activity spaces mentioning the size and their
connectivity.
Schematic elevations and sections (in same scale as plans).
Conceptual visualisation of the built form in terms of sketches, views, etc. and schematic
representation of open spaces and built form on site and their inter-relationships.
Block Model of the conceptual design with site.

No CAD drafting will be allowed at this stage for the preparation of plans, elevations, sections, etc.
The area programme submission should cover:

Design standards for spaces / functions proposed in the thesis project.


Areas provided in the case studies for similar spaces / functions.
Analysis of the above mentioned information and preparation of the final area programme for
the thesis project.
