The Elf Knock Off Hat

Elf is one of my favorite holiday movies. Its the first movie we watch the Friday after
Thanksgiving. This hat is inspired by the scene where Jovie is with the crowd in Central Park
while Buddy and Santa are escaping the Central Park Rangers. Jovie leads the crowd in
singing Santa Claus is Coming To Town while wearing the most beautiful cabled stocking
cap.
This isnt a perfect knock off of that hatbut its pretty darn close!!

I will refer to working the pattern in the directons a lot. When I say this what Im saying is
knit the rounds as they are called for in the above honeycomb and cable section (the purl sections
are always purled).
Directions
CO 100 sts. Join to knit in round. Place marker to mark round.
Brim
*K1, P1* rib for 6 inches.

*P5, K8, P5, K32, P5, K8, P5, K32* -- This is your set up round. The K8 sections will be the 8stitch cable and the K32 sections will be the honeycomb pattern. The P5 sections will separate
them. If you would like (I did), you may place markers between each section to keep them
straight.
Now you will work the honeycomb pattern in the 32 stitch sections simulatneously with the
cable pattern in the 8 stitch sections, purling the 5 stitch separator sections in each round.
Knit in the honeycomb and cable pattern for 7 inches (or longer if you want your hat to hang
down fartherjust be warned! Too much longer and it may not stay on--the weight of the hat
hanging down might pull it off your head!)
First Decreases
When youve reached 7 inches working the pattern its time to start decreasing.
First well decrease in the purl sections.
After you finish a C4B, C4F round of the honeycomb pattern (Round 1) you will knit the purl
sections as follows (work the rest of the pattern like normal during the purl decreases):
R1 P1, P2tog, P1 (4 sts)
R2 P4
R3 P1, P2tog, P1 (3 sts)
Now you should be on Round 5 of the honeycomb pattern. Knit this round like normal.
Now were going to decrease on the honeycomb sections. Knit the honeycomb sections as
follows for the next three rounds (work the cable sections in the pattern and purl the purl
sections).
R1 K2tog twice, K24, K2tog twice (28 sts)
R2 K28
R3 K2tog twice, K20 sts, K2tog twice (24
sts)

You should be on Round 8 of the honeycomb pattern and Round 6 of the cable patern. Knit this
round for each section in the pattern.
You will now be on Round 1 of the honeycomb pattern and Round 7 of the cable.
Now were going to decrease on the cable sections. Knit the cable sections as follows:
K1, K2tog, K2, K2tog, K1 (6 sts).
On the same round as you are decreasing the cable sections: In the honeycomb sections you
will knit *C4F, C4B* instead of *C4B, C4F* as this round normally calls for.
Its time to decrease some more in the honeycomb section! (Are you still with me?)
Remember, as were decreasing the honeycomb sections, keep knitting the cable sections in the
pattern like normal.
Knit the honeycomb sections as follows for the next three rounds:
R1 K2tog twice, K16, K2tog twice (20 sts)
R2 K20
R3 K2tog twice, K12, K2tog twice (16 sts)
On the next round after these three, work the cable sections in the pattern, and *C4F, C4B* in
the honeycomb section.
At this point, or sooner, you may wish to switch to DPNs.
Were finally at the final honeycomb decreases!!!

Knit the honeycomb section as follows for the next three rounds (of course, you know the routine
by nowthe cable section is knit working the pattern like normal!):
R1 K2 tog twice, K8, K2tog twice (12 sts)
R2 K12
R3 K2tog twice, K4, K2tog twice (8 sts)
In the next round, for the cable sections you will now C3F (instead of C4F, because now its a
6-stitch cable, not an 8 stitch cable). In this same round in the honeycomb sections you will
C4F, CFB.
Now you will work the pattern for another 11 roundson the 4th round you will cross the cables
in the honeycomb section as a C4B, C4F. From the 4th round forward youll work the pattern
but switch the order of the cross that it tells you to do for the honeycomb sections. So if the
pattern tells you to CF4, C4Bswitch it and knit C4B, C4F. At this point it will be pretty
intuitive and youll be able to tell if youre screwing up the direction of the honeycomb cables.
Since theres only one honeycomb youll be making at this point, its easy to rip out if you screw
upask me how I know this!
After you have finished these 11 rounds, break a large tail on the yarn and thread the the tail
through the remaining live stitches.
Finishing
Make a large pom-pom using your technique of choice.
To make mpom-pom, what I did was trace a 6 inch saucer onto two piece of cardboard and cut
them out. I then traced a small drinking glass in the middle of each circle of cardboard. I cut
those out.
Youll have two cardboard donuts. I then took my yarn and wrapped it around the donut through
the donut hole. I was very liberal with the wrapping because I wanted a big fluffy pom pom.
When I finished wrapping I took a pair of scissors and cut around the outer edge of the donut in
the space where the two cardboard donuts meet. After I cut it, being very gentle as not to have
any of the yarn come loose off the donut, I took a long piece of yarn and tied the yarn so that it
cinched the yarn together where the donuthole wasthus closing the donut hole. I pried off
the cardboard donuts and fluffed and trimmed my pom pom.
I practiced first with some crappy yarn just so I could get the technique down before I used my
good yarn.
If these directions make no sense to youjust Google pom pom making and youll find a
picture tutorial on how to make a pom pom like this.
Tack on your pom-pom to the tip of the hat.
Weave in any ends.
