WhatisBiomass?
Biomassreferstoanyorganicmaterialderivedfromplantsthatusesunlighttogrow.Whenburned,the
energystoredinbiomassisreleasedtoproduceheatorelectricity.Commonformsofsolidbiomassinclude

BiomassComposition
Thecompositionofbiomassvariessignificantlyamongbiomasstypes.Fuelperformanceisrelatedtothe
compositionofthebiomaterial.Importantfactorsincludeash,carbon,hydrogen,nitrogen,sulphur,oxygen
andchloridecontent.TheelementalcompositionofvariousfuelsinOntarioisindicatedinTable1.Allvalues

Ash
Thenoncombustiblecontentofbiomassisreferredtoasash.Highashcontentleadstofoulingproblems,
especiallyiftheashishighinmetalhalides(e.g.,potassium).Unfortunately,biomassfuels,especially
agriculturalcrops/residuestendtohaveahighashwithhighpotassiumcontent.Asaresult,theashmeltsat
