TITLE: - Design of Clutch and Aesthetic & Ergonomic Consideration in
Design.
1. Explain Construction, Working & Application of Centrifugal clutch.
2. Derive an expression for power transmitting capacity of single plate clutch for uniform
press & wear theory.

4. A cone clutch is use to connect an electric motor running at 1440 rpm with a machine that
is stationary The machine is equivalent to a rotor of mass 150 kg and radius of gyration as
250mm. The machine has to be brought to the full speed of 1440 rpm from a stationary
condition in 40 S .the semi-cone angle is 12.5. The mean radius of clutch is twice the
face width. The coefficient of friction is 0.2 and the normal intensity of pressure between
contacting surfaces should not exceed 0.1 N/mm2. Assume uniform wear condition
calculate.
a) The inner & outer diameter.
b) The face width of friction lining.
c) The amount of heat generated during each engagement of clutch.
5. A multi plate clutch has three driving plates. The outer and inner diameters of the friction
lining are 240 mm and 120 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction is 0.27. Assuming
uniform pressure condition, find the total spring force pressing the plate together to
transmit 28 kW at 1440 rpm.
If there are six springs each having a stiffness of 15 N/mm, find the power that can be
transmitted, if each pair of contacting surface has worn away by 1.5 mm. Assuming
uniform wear condition.
6. A centrifugal clutch transmitting 10 KW at 750 rpm, consists of four shoes. The clutch is to
be engaged at 500 rpm. The inner radius of the drum is 165 mm, while the radius to the
centre of gravity of the shoes in engaged position is 140 mm. if the coefficient of friction is
0.3, calculate the mass of each shoe.

TITLE: - DESIGN OF PRESSURE VESSEL
1. Explain (I) Autofrettage.
(II) End enclosure.
2. Explain in details the different types of support used for pressure vessels.
3. Explain Pressure Vessels Classification based on IS-2825-1969.
4. A pressure vessel consists of a cylindrical shell of inside diameter 1600mm which is closed
by torispherical heads with crown radius of 1300mm. The operating pressure inside the
vessel is 1.5 MPa. The yields strength of material used for shell &head is 255MPa & weld
efficiency of 80%. The C.A is 2mm. Determine the thickness of cylindrical shell&
torispherical shell.

5. A reaction vessel of cylindrical shell of 1200mm diameter is provided with a nozzle having
an opening of 125mm diameter. The thickness of the shell is 8mm & that of the nozzle is
12mm.The vessel is treated as class-2 type. The internal pressure in the shell is 0.8MPa.
The corrosion allowance may be taken as 1.5mm. The permissible tensile stress for shell &
nozzle material is 80MPa. Nozzle is constructed out of seamless pipe. Design the
dimensions of reinforcing pad, if required. The reinforcing material is of the same quality
as that of the shell& available in thickness of 6mm.

1. Explain:

(a). Gear tooth failure


(b). Force analysis of helical gear

2. Explain beam strength of spur and helical gear and Device equation for beam strength
3. Write a note on virtual number of teeth.
4. The following data is given for a pair of spur gear with 20 full depth involutes teeth
Zp = 24
Zg = 56
b = 30mm
Np = 1000rpm
m = 3mm
Cs = 1.5
Both gears are made of steel with an ultimate tensile strength of 600MPa. Using the
velocity factor to account for dynamic load, calculate
(a)Beam strength, (b) Velocity factor, (c) Rated power
That the gear can transmit without bending failure, if factor of safety is1.5
5. Pitch circle diameter of pinion and gear is 100mm and 300mm respectively. The pinion
made of plain carbon steel 40C8 (Sut=600N/mm2) while the gear made of gray cast iron
FG300 (Sut=300N/mm2). The pinion receives 5KW power at 500 rpm through its shaft.
The service factor and factor of safety can be taken as 1.5 each. The face width of the gear
can be taken as 10 times that of the module. Assume that the velocity factor accounts for
dynamic load calculate
(a) Module, (b) The no. of teeth on pinion and gear.
6. The following data is given for a pair of parallel helical gear made of steel;
Power transmitted=20K
Speed of pinion = 720 rpm
No. of teeth on pinion = 35
Centre distance = 285mm
No. of teeth on gear = 70
Normal module = 5mm
Face width = 5mm
Normal pressure angle = 200
UTS = 600N/mm2
Surface hardness = 300BHN
Grade of machining = 6
Cs = 1.25
Calculate: a) Helix angle, b) Beam strength, c) Wear strength, d) Static and dynamic load,
e) Effective load.

TITLE: - DESIGN OF BEVEL AND WORM GEAR
1. Explain: a] Terminology of worm gear.
b] Terminology of bevel gear.

2. Derive an expression for efficiency of worm gear drives.
3. Explain effective face width of worm gear drive .for the worm gear also derive equation for
length of root for the worm gear.
4. A pair of straight bevel gear is mounted on shafts which intersect at right angle. Zp = 30,
Zg = 45, a=20. The pinion shaft is connected to 16.5 kW, 500 rpm motor. Cs=1.5 gear are
made of steel (Sut=570 MPa) BHN=350, machining grade 8, m = 6mm, b = 50mm, axial
width of gear blank=40mm. Determine factor of safety for bending & pitting.
5. The pair of straight bevel gear consists of 24 teeth pinion, meshing with 48 teeth gear. Give
m=6mm, b=50mm gear are made of grey cast iron FG220 (Sut=220 N/mm2) a=20,
np=300 rpm, Cs=1.5. Find rated power.

6. Design a worm gear set to transmit 10kw at rpm the input speed from the motor is 1800
rpm. Also calculate efficiency of drive.

TITLE: - DESIGN OF ROLLING CONTACT BEARING
1. Explain (i) Selection of bearing from manufacturing catalogue.
(ii) Rating life of bearing.
(iii) Normal Distribution.
(iv) Design and Natural Tolerances.
2. A ball bearing is subjected to radial load of 4000N and is expected to have a satisfactory
life of 12000 hrs at 720 rpm with a reliability of 95%. Calculate the dynamic load carrying
capacity of the bearing so that it can be selected from a manufacturers catalogue based on
90% reliability. If there are four such bearing, each with a reliability of 95% in a system,
what is the reliability of the complete system.
3. A single-row deep groove ball bearing is subjected to a 30 seconds work cycle that consists
of the following two parts. The static and dynamic load capacities of ball bearing are 50
and 68 kN respectively. Calculate the expected life of the bearing in hours.

4. The diameter of bolts is normally distributed with a mean of 20.02 mm and a standard
deviation of 0.02 mm. The design specification for the bolt diameter is 20 0.025.

TITLE: - DESIGN PROJECT (Gear Drive)
Q.1 A compressor running at 300 rpm is driven by a 15 KW, 1200 rpm motor
through a 200 full depth involutes gears. The centre distance is 0.375 m. The motor
pinion is to be of C-30 forged steel hardened and tempered, and the driven gear is to
be cast steel. Assuming medium shock condition:
(i) Determine the module, face width, number of teeth on each gear.
(ii) Check the gear for dynamic load and wear.
(iii) Design the drive completely.
