Leaders in plant construction
and mechanical engineering
The SMS group is, under the roof of SMS Holding GmbH, a group of global players in plant construction and
mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals processing industry. It consists of the two Business
Areas SMS Siemag and SMS Meer. The two Business Areas operate as independent group companies that
cooperate closely with each other. As the financial organization, SMS Holding GmbH is responsible for strategic
planning and controlling. The sole owner of the SMS group is Siemag Weiss GmbH & Co. KG, the holding of the
Weiss entrepreneurial family.
FAMILY-OWNED AND
WORLDWIDE PRESENT
As a family-owned company, the SMS group has built
on solid values and a culture of responsibility for four
generations. It holds a strong market position while
its decentralized structure ensures a fast and efficient
response to individual customer demands. The
SMS group combines the flexibility of company units
that operate as medium-sized enterprises and the
broad resources of an internationally active company
all for the customers benefit. The decentralized
corporate culture ensures that not only the individual
units but also the employees themselves always think
and act in an entrepreneurial manner.

Depending on the machine configuration, bar-to-bar,
coil-to-bar and coil-to-coil ope-ration are possible
for the manufacturing of cylindrical, tapered and/or
doubletaper bars. All common steel alloys, round
cast, titanium and other non-ferrous materials can be
processed. The product program specifically includes:
Pre-straightening machines in multipleor two-roll design
Complete bar loading device with unscrambling
for bar as well as coil preparation systems,
consisting of pay-off reel, coil end opener,
pre-straightening and calibrating units
Pre-Straightening
Two- and Multi-Roll-Straightener

also a standard scale collecting box as alternative
Extraction of dust inside of the hood by an
exhaust system
Two-roll Straightener
For high straightness requirements over the total bar
length, i.e. incl. leading and trailing bar ends, a
two-roll straightener may be used as an alternative.
The main features of this machines are:
Hydraulically movable upper roll to compensate the
ovality of the black bar
Adjustable drives
Scale discharge via emulsion
Hydraulic motors to adjust the roll angular
position
Hydraulic motors to adjust the guide ledges
to the diameter
Steel guide ledges with hardened wear
segments for the surfaces in contact with material
Good accessibility and easy maintenance thanks to
vertically fitted straightener rolls
Various loading and unloading facilities, suitable to
the individual case
Raw Material
Coil or Bar
Pay-off reel
Coil weights up to 3500 kg
Standard-type pay-off reel
C arousel pay-off reel
T ilting carousel pay-off reel
Coil end opener
Coil end openers to open and pre-straighten the
leading coil end, available in three sizes and right/left
versions.
Counterclockwise
wound coil
Calibrating unit
The combination of the plastic deformation effect
during the calibrating process and the simultaneous
twist on the taut wire, removes kinks from even
roll-hardened material. Therefore, it will straight and
it can still roll and be unscrambled after peeling and
cutting to size. The wire is twisted by the inclined
pinch rolls.
Peeling machine
PM-Series
The PM-series is suited to the most stringent performance, quality and flexibility requirements set on the
machining of round solid materials and thick-walled
tubes of all common steel alloys, round cast, titanium
and other non-ferrous materials with diameters of
5 to 250 mm (specific diameter range individually
dependent on model).
The common operating modes bar-to-bar and
coil-to-bar for cylindrical, tapered and double-tapered
bars and the coil-to-coil method are possible. The
distinguishing characteristics of the PM-series are:
Economic production of bright steel
of the highest quality
Rigid construction
Use of vibration damping materials
Use of quick-change systems
High performance range
Peeling quality up to IT8

Material testing
A testing unit can be integrated into the line to
ensure the required quality of the peeled and
straightened bar. This can consist of:
Standard test coil according to the eddy current
method for testing surface point errors
Rotating test coil according to the eddy current
method for testing surfaces for point and
longitudinal errors
Measurement of internal material defects by
ultrasonic
Randomized measurement of the rod
straightness
Measurement of the diameter
Grade and heat treatment verification
Bar end Processing
The machining of bar material in downstream
machines such as automatic lathes often requires a
certain bar end shape to ensure a trouble-free feed in
the lathe.
The relevant bar end machining operation FP-series
can take place at the end of the line by machining the
straightened and peeled bar, or to minimize cutting
tool wear upstream of the peeling machine.
The flexible machine concept enables a multitude of
bar end machining options such as:
Face turning
Face milling
Chamfering
Trunnion turning
Centering boring
Sawing

WRP B/BF-series
To fulfill the highest performance requirements at
high demanding material qualities, the two-roll
straightening and polishing machine of the WRP
B/BF type series are used. Their most noteworthy
characteristics are:
Optimum straightening effect, even with highstrength materials
To satisfy the most stringent requirements,
additional hydraulic clamping of the top roll cylinder
could be provided to ensure that the roll package
is absolutely rigid during the straightening
process
Two-roll principle with concave upper roller and
convex bottom roller to ensure that even the ends
are straightened
The lower roll runs in a single-sided stationary
bearing
Straightener rolls from alloyed and hardened
chrome steel
Lateral guidance of the bar to be straightened
between the straightener rolls by special guide
ledges on the inlet and outlet sides, using bushings or prisms
Height-adjustable traverses to adjust the guide
ledges to the center of the straightening gap
Easy change of the guide ledges by swiveling the
traverses outwards
Easy and quick replacement of the entire roller
pair using the integrated roll change device
Long straightening roller life due to coolant
lubrication
Suitable for in-line use or as a separate unit
combined with a handling system
16
WRPF-Serie
The two-roll straightening and polishing machine
of WRP F series is suitable for the lower to medium
strength and diameter ranges. The special characteristics of this machine are:
Cost-effective design with manual adjustments
Straightener rolls from alloyed, hardened
chrome steel
Suitable for long and short bars, depending on
the feeding system
Suitable for in-line use or as a separate unit
combined with a handling system
