leader on this issue. It must however be noted that the rest of the
religious authorities (Maraji) have provided a religious ruling
(fatwa) declaring that such a transaction is impermissible (haram).
For example, even if one is working in a supermarket such as
Coles, it is prohibited to deal in any transaction that involves the
sale of un-Islamically slaughtered meat (mayta) to non-Muslims,
including those which are contained within canned products.
The second type of meat is those seafood items that do not require
cutting of blood supply in order to kill them such as crab, lobster
and calamari, which are not inherently unpure (najis) in the same
sense as un-Islamically slaughtered meat like beef and lamb are.
Since it is not unpure (najis), it is possible to serve such seafood to
non- Muslims.
The third category of un-Islamically slaughtered meat is a mixed
category, i.e. those cases where you cannot ascertain whether is is
permissible (halal) or impermissible (haram). There is a tradition
(hadith) related by Imam Sadiq (a.s) which has been the basis of
religious rulings (fatwas) presented by the religious authorities
(maraji) that indicates that where the product is mixed between
permissible (halal) and impermissible (haram), a Muslim can sell it
to non-Muslims.
