Experiment: Anthropometric Lab

Ana Maria Pelcastre

Date: March 22, 2013

Recorder:

Subject Gender: Female

Subjects age: 23
1. Ideal Body Weight (IBW)
a) Weight/Height

Weight: 129#/58.53 kg
*129#/2.2#=58.53kg

Height: 56/167.64cm
1 foot= 12 inches
1 inch= 2.54cm
56=66 in X2.54=167.64cm

b) Elbow Breath: 2.2in/5.5cm (*Lab manual, page 92-2, Table 6-3)

1 inch=2.54cm
2.2in X 2.54cm=5.5cm
c) Frame size: small (*Lab manual, page 92-2, Table 6-3)
d) Life insurance Table Weight Range: 120-133#/55-59kg (*Lab manual, page
92-1, Table 6-1).
2.2#=1kg
120#/2.2#=55kg
130#/2.2#=59kg
e) Hamwi IBW: 130# (*Lab manual, page 80).
Formula for women: 100# for first 5 feet in height + 5# for each additional
inch
Subjects Height: 56
100#+30#= 130#
f) IBW%: 99.2% (*Lab manual p116)
Category: Ideal
%IBW=current wt. / ideal wt. X 100%
129#/130# X 100%= 99.2%
Comment: According to the Life Insurance Table, the subject has a small frame that
ranges from 120-133# and her actual body weight is 129# which gives her a %IBW
of 99.2%; this indicates that the subject is in the ideal category for her body weight.

2. Body Mass Index (BMI)

2. Body Mass Index
a) BMI: 21kg/m2 (*Lab manual, p80)
BMI: wt. (kg)/ ht. (m)2
BMI: 59kg/ (1.6764m)2= 21 kg/m2
Category: Normal (*Used the Table 6-6 on Lab manual p92-2)
3. Waist-to-hip ratio
a) Waist: 65.9cm
b) Hip: 96cm
c) waist-to-hip ration: 0.68
65.9cm/96cm=0.68
Comment: According to the nutrition 302 lab manual, the preferred ratio value for
females is <0.8. The subjects ratio is 0.68 which means she meets the preferred
value and is considered ideal.
4. Arm-Circumference and Triceps Skinfold Comparison
a) Triceps: 22mm= 50th -75th Percentile (*Use Lab manual, p88)
b) Mid-arm Circumference: 270mm
c) Arm Muscle Area: 2600 mm2= 5th Percentile
(*Arm muscle area: Lab manual p92-3, Figure 7-14)(*Chart on Lab manual, p90)
d) Total arm area: 58cm2 (*Use the chart on Lab manual, p89)
*total arm muscle area: 33cm2
e) Arm Fat Area: 2500 mm2= 50th 75th Percentile
(*Use the chart on Lab manual, p91) (*Arm fat area: Total arm area Total arm muscle area)
o 58cm2 33 cm2= 25cm2
o 25cm2 X 100=2500mm2

(age)
X2= sum of triceps, Suprailiac, and thigh skinfolds

Lean Body Mass: 44 kg, 75%
Formula: % Body Fat= (495/Density) 450
o % Body Fat= (495/1.0428) 450= 24.683%
Formula: Body Fat, kg= total BW X % Body Fat
o Body Fat, kg=58.53 kgX24.68%= 14.445kg
Formula: Lean Body Mass kg=total BW- Body fat Kg
o Lean body mass, kg= 58.53kg-14.445= 44.085kg
Formula: Lean Body Mass, %= 100%- % body fat
o Lean body mass, %= 100%-24.683%= 75.317%

o Lean body mass, %= 100%-22.9148%= 77.0852%
d) Hydrostatic weighting (Gold standard for body fat)
Residual Volume (RV)= 1.3566 (*Use the equation that is on the lab manual,
p81) X 0.001)

Formula for women: 29.3 (ht in cm) + 7.6(age) 3730 X 0.001

o 29.3 (167.64 cm) + 7.6(23) 3730 X 0.001= 1.3566

Trial #1: 1.97

#2: 1.904
o 1.97 +1.904 /2=1.937

=> Average: 1.937 (UWW)

Body Density=1.05

Formula: Body density= BW (kg)/(BW-UWW(kg)/0.9954) RV

o Body Density= 58.53kg/ (58.53-1.937/0.9954-1.3566=1.054633

*BW=Body weight
*UWW= under water weight
Body fat= 11.33kg, 19.35% (*use Siri equation on Lab Manual page 81)
Lean Body Mass= 47.20kg, 80.64%
Formula: % Body Fat= (495/Density) 450
o % Body Fat= (495/1.054633) 450= 19.35758%
Formula: Body Fat, kg= total BW X % Body Fat
o Body Fat, kg=58.53 kgX19.35758%= 11.32999kg
Formula: Lean Body Mass kg=total BW- Body fat Kg
o Lean body mass, kg= 58.53kg- 11.32999= 47.2000kg
Formula: Lean Body Mass, %= 100%- % body fat
o Lean body mass, %= 100%-19.35758%= 80.64242%
Comment: The % body fat for the circumference measurement was 37%, for the
BIA test 20.2%, for the three and seven skinfold measurement 25% & 23% and for
the hydrostatic weighing test was 19.35%. Comparing all the results, we can see
that from all the methods used the one that got closer to the gold standard value of
19.35% was the BIA test, followed by the seven and three skin fold and the
circumference percentages. The possible sources of error with the last three
methods were inaccurate measurements performed by novice dietetic students and
the inability of the last three methods to differentiate fat mass from muscle tissue.
